Title: 1954 specimen notes
Post by: forrory on February 05, 2014, 06:52:51 pm
Hey guys I'm new to these forums and just wanted to say hi.
i also have a question, not to sure if anyone can help. I've came across a few specimen notes from 1954, $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, $1000 all in perfect condition as they were packaged in 1954 and all marked with the cereal code 0000 00000 00000.

just wondering if these are of any value?

i  also have all the coins as well from that year.

Catalog value for a complete set of $1-$1000 is $9000. Not a bad find at all!

Really? wow thanks!
Any tips on where to sell these notes? I'm not much of a collector and would be a bit of a waist to sell to a pawn store. :(

Best bet would be at a major auction- The biggest one of the year is the RNCA annual convention in August. Auction is being handled by these folks:

http://tcnccoins.com/ (http://tcnccoins.com/)

The other big auction companies in Canada are:

Charles Moore- http://www.moorecoins.com/contact.aspx (http://www.moorecoins.com/contact.aspx)

Geoffrey Bell- http://www.gbellauctions.com/ (http://www.gbellauctions.com/)

If you are looking for a straight private sale, you can try Don Olmstead (at http://www.olmsteadcurrency.com/ (http://www.olmsteadcurrency.com/))and see what he will offer, or do 15 (meaningful) posts here and put them in the Buy/Sell/Trade section.

Good luck!

What would some of the letters be in the serial number line if any at all? Pictures would be nice for condition sake.

I am curious to know what is meant by "as they were packaged".  As far as I know, the specimen notes released by the Bank of Canada did not come with any packaging.  Are these notes (+coins) in some sort of display piece?

They are all together as a set, and the set is in a small green binder that says Bank of canada 1954 on the front. Each note is in a plastic seal but the notes are removable.

Your mention of there being a $1,000 note included suggests that this is a devil's face specimen set, which would make it worth more in the $20,000 range.  Of course only photos or scans will help us to be sure.

Whoops, missed that. He is right. If it is a Devil's Face set then there were only 7 of the $1000 notes sold.  8)

Wow, it is a Devil's Face set, including the $1000. That's the find of a lifetime.

How did you come across this set?

Actually it's a bit of a funny story, my grandfather passed away a few years ago and we are now renovating his house to rent. Long story short he had a few boxes with some letters from a woman he was having an affaire with and in the midst of all that paperwork we found that folder and coins. We've had those boxes for a few years now and never bothered to look threw it.  :-D

Well if that specimen set was a "token of affection" from the woman he had an affair with, he must have been damn near spectacular!!  :D

Hahaha I wish I could ask. We have no mention on what he wanted to do with them or if he even knew they were of any value. Any idea if the coins are of any value or if we should repackage them in a frame?

Oh. My. God.   ???

What an amazing set!  Whatever you do, do not break the bills out of their original packaging.  I've never seen them in the original booklet.  Also leave the coins as-is.  They have survived this long unscathed.  Any cleaning and/or remounting you do may reduce the value of your collection.

I hope you plan to make this specimen set an heirloom because they do not come around often.  Get insurance coverage on it as it could be worth several thousand dollars.

Hope this helps,
Dean

But realistically how much is this set worth? I know they are worth something but how much would someone really pay?

My reason for asking is my wife took the set to a pawn store and they offered 15k for everything and by the reaction of these forums I have a feeling they should be worth a bit more. He mentioned that in the booklet the notes have tape holding them in place. Is that a big issue of is he just low balling her?

I'm assuming all notes are in this set? $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 as well?

I believe the notes from your set are expected to have glue residue as this is how they were mounted in the binder.
The catalogue price for this set is $24,000.
The coin set is nothing to sneeze are either, there are two varieties for 1954 the regular one $750. and the no shoulder fold 1 cent one $1650.
Judging by your good fortune you have the NSF variety.
$15,000 not a bad offer from a pawn shop, but I'm sure you could do better, just takes a little time

Btw why are they called devils face?

There were two releases of the 1954 series.  The original issue had what people perceived to be a "devil's face" behind the Queen's left ear, so a new version with a modified version was issued in 1956.  By and large the Devil's Face notes are worth more than modified notes.

See this link for a picture that shows Devil's Face next to the modified: http://www.moneymuseum.ca/images/DevilsFace.jpg

A 1957 set is still worth about $200, not too shabby.

$15,000 cash offered by a pawn broker is surprisingly generous.  That's not a low-ball offer, and because it's cash, there is no commission on it and the decision to declare that as income is yours.  ;)

Sets like this were offered publicly for the first time in 1999 in the first Bank of Canada archive sale.  It might be worth investigating to see if this set was part of that sale or if it was not.  If it is NOT from that sale, that raises the pedigree of the set and you might be able to get significantly more for it if offered in a major auction.  The 1999 Bank of Canada sale was conducted by Charles Moore's auction company.  Auction catalogues can still be found secondhand or even purchases from Mr Moore directly.

Hi fellow members,

This set was featured in the latest RCNA TCNC auction this past weekend.  Does anyone know how much it went for plus taxes and buyer's premium?

It was for auction item 855

Hey everyone,

its been a few years since I've sold the bank notes and have always sort of regretted it. i was wondering if anyone knows if those original bank notes are for sale anywhere id love to make an offer and possibly purchase them back.

Anyways, bit of a long shot but who knows.

Thanks,
