I haven't collected new coins before. What time of year do the new coins usually hit the marketplace?

They can start at anytime.
I have often found the first cents of the new year in february. Have before seen new coins in january. Sometimes its only in the summer or fall before we see the new coins get circulated. I think its all a question of supply and demand.

Received a 2013 nickel in change yesterday.   It has a very large 3, twice the size of the other numbers in the date.

Correct. For some reason this year on the nickels they made the 3 larger than all the other digits. Was this a mistake... Maybe however looks like they were all minted like that.

So after this post I go looking for 2013 loonie rolls. Visit many local branches and ask for new rolls. Finally at one branch some positive results. I am happy to see those saran wrapped loonies. I get two of them rolls.

Take them home and look at it carefully and it turns out to be 2012.  :o

New 2012 loonie rolls in June 2013? Wow. They must have had plenty of them going around.

Search for 2013 loonie still continues. :(

Finally got a 2013 loonie. Thx AZ for sharing your find. It still is very infrequent.

Wonder if anyone has run into 2013 toonie.

The other day i got a brand new perfect condition toonie. Was sure it was a 2013 but no... it was a 2012.  :( There seems to still be a lot of 2012 rolls out there that have not been circulated yet perhaps thanks to a very large quantity minted last year.

I got two rolls of loonies from the bank. All security 2012s. The surprising thing was they were all circulated, not brand new.

Perhaps pre-security loonies are being aggressively withdrawn from circulation by banks? I can't think of how fifty circulated loonies, all from 2012, could find their way into two rolls just by chance.

------

This is unusual for sure - however - I for one when I do roll hunting separate out the coins by year. After I am done I put them back by year. Invariably there are times when I will have full roll of circulated 2012 loonies in it. Surprisingly I can even make a full roll of 1987 loonies in it. I have had at least two times when I have had a roll full of uncirculated loonie after I have gone through a couple of rolls of new mint rolls and returned coins that did not interest me.

When I receive rolls that are like the one you describe I often feel that they have been through a roll hunters hands.

With regards to aggressive withdrawal I cannot make sense of it at all. On an average the frequency with which I get 1987 loonies is about the same as the frequency with which I get 2012 loonies. Everything in between other than perhaps 1996, and 2009 is relatively sparse.

I would have thought that if they were withdrawing they would somehow start from coins that look beaten up i.e. 1987 to 1996. I don't know if they have a way of picking the different years out when they withdraw?

When it rains it pours. Today I picked up several rolls and for sure the frequency of 2013 loonies is increasing.

Incidentally I was able to pick up a mint roll of 2013 loonie from a local bank not my home branch. There was a bit of a hesitation giving it to me because they were "only meant for business customers" so I was told.

That's an interesting theory, but in this case both of the rolls were machine rolled. So unless the collector has one of those expensive rolling machines, I'm more inclined to believe it was a bank, the transit company, or a large business that rolled them.

Everyone can believe what they want that's what makes the world go around.  But to think that to make rolls of coins look like they were machine rolled there is a heavy investment required - Now that's another story.

So if you don't mind buying a $4 dollar or so gizmo you can do it yourself - Watch the video by following this link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDrLPaNOUOs

To avoid spending  $4 on the gizmo and repackage the machine rolled wrapper that came from a prior roll from the bank follow the instructions below

Step 1 - Take a machine rolled wrapper that you just emptied
{http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/5374/gb4o.jpg:http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/5374/gb4o.th.jpg}

Step 2 - Assemble your 25 2012 circulated loonies to be packaged
{http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/858/3olr.jpg:http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/858/3olr.th.jpg}

Step 3 - Fill the machine rolled wrapper with the loonies
{http://img542.imageshack.us/img542/5844/xhq.jpg:http://img542.imageshack.us/img542/5844/xhq.th.jpg}

Step 4 - Gently fold the top open portion roll in towards the inner part of the roll as shown by the red arrow
{http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/614/0dyf.jpg:http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/614/0dyf.th.jpg}

Step 5 - Roll the top portion down into the roll with your fingers
{http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/7558/cban.jpg:http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/7558/cban.th.jpg}

Now the above part may be bit tricky for some but people of my generation I am sure are used to it :D

Step 6 - You have a roll ready to take to the bank
{http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/7842/do2y.jpg:http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/7842/do2y.th.jpg}

Hey I may not know much about paper currency or coins but I do know how to roll ----- ;)

Yipee

First 2013 toonie found in circulation for me. A family member picked it up at a clothing store in the mall

Looks almost as if it is out of a roll.

Hopefully once it rains it pours

So it seems I am not the only one who has had difficulty finding the 2013 toonie. I was at the bank the other day and a lady walks up to teller in the wicket besides where I am doing my transactions. I hear the words do you have the 2013 version of these coins and my ears perk up.

I look towards the wicket and the lady has laid out two toonies and is saying to the teller that she is looking for the 2013 version of this coin for her dad.

The teller was nice enough to say that she can check in the till. I had to leave by then and only hoped well for the lady looking for the toonie.

After finding the one I thought I might easily find some more but no luck so far.

So all you guys who have 2013 toonies in other parts of the country ship them over to Southern Ontario and we will ship our 2013 loonies towards your end. ;)

  Actually it's not easy to find the 2013 toonie elsewhere either unfortunately.  I've only found 1 so far in my area (Montreal) so you are not alone  :)

  And please no more 2013 loonies!  I see too many of those things!  :D

Got a couple of new 2013 quarters today in change.

Over the past 4-5 weeks, I've seen 342 Caribou quarters, 438 Arctic quarters and 193 Secord/deSalaberry quarters, all 2013.  These were from a total of 775 rolls searched.

I was wondering where all these quarters were disappearing  ;D

775 rolls that is 31000 quarters. Is this like a lifetime worth of searching? ???

Are you finding any non plated variety? I hear that they have all been gobbled up by the ARP.

Yes, I have found many non-plated coins, in fact, roughly 10%.

A full report will be published in at least one numismatic publication within the next few months.  In the meantime, follow me on Twitter, or watch for #GreatQuarterStudy for little tidbits of my findings from time to time.
