From the charlton there are 3 known ranges of test notes in G/R:
0000001-0079999
5280000-5367999
5400001-5480000
In charlton it says "market value not yet established" Are these notes extremely rare. Im looking to possibly buy one of these G/R test notes if i come across one at a show... i would like to know from other forum members what prices have been offered for such G/R notes in the past. Should i expect that this note would be next to impossible to find?

I believe there is only one known it can be seen here at the Canadian paper money museum website.

Gary is correct. Only one G/R test note is known to exist in private hands and it is currently held by an anonymous collector who graciously donated the scan to this site (http://www.cdnpapermoney.com/English/BoC/1954M_2.htm) and the Online Canadian Paper Money Museum.
There exists one more G/R test note (and possibly another, but this has not been confirmed) at the National Currency Collection in the Bank of Canada's museum. It is available for public view if I recall correctly.
The chances of you or anyone else coming across such a note at a show or auction is slim to nil. I do not believe that the collector who currently holds the G/R note has any intention of selling it.

I think somewhere around here I might still have a mug with the G/R test note on it. I'll have a look tonight.
-
That solves my G/R questions! Thank you :)

Beep-beep, beep-beep, beep-beep-beep, beep!
We interrupt our regularly-scheduled programming to bring you this:
BREAKING NEWS
A second publically-held G/R test note has been identified!
It is currently listed on eBay (link not allowed) and with over 5 days remaining in the auction, bidding has already exceeded USD$1,000.00! This note is in AU condition, according to the auction listing. It has been purportedly verified by reputable dealer, Don Olmstead, however this has yet to be confirmed as Don is currently on vacation.

The first G/R note is G/R 0058107 and is privately held by a collector.

This second note sold at auction for USD$6,651.99, or approximately CAD$8,153.35.

Really interesting. J&M have listed a G/R test note UNC!!! in their current inventory. Price $3,500. Could this be the same one found back in summer 2005? $3,500 Thats really cheap! Seeing its the ONLY known G/R UNC.

I had email them about that note and the reply was that it wasn't in the right range. What ever that means.

so then its not really a test note. Interesting.

I had email them about that note and the reply was that it wasn't in the right range. What ever that means.
I guess it's just a regular $2 with G/R prefix. Say in the 8,000000 range.

They should correct their listings. Its false advertising

I wasn't able to find this note... Am I missing something?

I phoned them about it the other day and he said it was sold. He couldn't confirm the serial number for me.

Seen at the Calgary show in March, at J&M's table in there display case a G/R 3439810. This however doesn't fall within the test note range. This may or may not be the note you are talking about. Yes, I took the time to write the number down, as you hardly see this prefix. It was AU-UNC, l don't recall for sure, but it was a higher grade note. Hope this help's out a bit.
Happy Hunting Darcy

do you remember the price for that note?

Sorry, I don't recall the price. :-/

Another G/R test note has shown up. It is G/R 5318626 which falls into the middle range of test notes between 5280000 to 5367999. The other two G/R test notes in private hands fall in the lower range of 0000001 to 0079999. Apparently the Bank of Canada Currency Museum has one but the serial number is not known.
-
I've been informed by a reliable source that the single G/R test note in the National Currency Collection is G/R 5280001.
So the four known G/R test notes are:
G/R 0058107
G/R 0067995
G/R 5280001
G/R 5318626
-
Wiki site has been updated with these two newest numbers. Thanks Doc!

Here are better scans of the recently discovered G/R test note:
http://tinyurl.com/zpyv6
http://tinyurl.com/k2r8o
You will note that the back of the note has a date written in the margin. 19 Dec 64
As part of the test protocol, I wonder if a bank official recorded the date that the note was removed from circulation and wrote this date on the back of the note. If this is the case, then I wonder how the note then re-entered circulation?

Can I ask where you got the note, what price was paid for it, and where it currently resides (ie: city/prov)?
Thanks!

I was browsing through some old CPMS newsletters and on Pg 114 of Vol 7 #4 1999 I found something interesting....
The piece lists the known ranges of G/R test notes as follows:
G/R 0000001 - 0079999
G/R 5280000 - 5359999
G/R 5360000 - 5367999
G/R 5400001 - 5480000
Most of the listings I have seen as well as the listing in the catalogue for the
last number of years stated the ranges as follows:
G/R 0000001 - 0079999
G/R 5280000 - 5367999
G/R 5400001 - 5480000
So this has made me curious...... Is there any reason that the
1999 listing broke the middle range of G/R test notes into two distinct groups?
Thanks for any insight.

Hi
I was hoping that some members might be able to help me with this question.
Bare with me but my understanding of a test note is the idea of the printing company trying a new technique/paper /ink ( I'm sure list can go on) to see how well a note weathers in circulation.
My question is
Does anybody know what they were testing with the G/R note? Is their a way to have some sort of test done to compare a G/R test note and a regular G/R note?
If this has already bin discussed could you please point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance
MG

Please check p228 of the Charlton catalogue, 22nd edition. I am not aware of any further detail beyond what appears there.
-
I'm curious to know what "These notes were subject to treatment" means. Is this an assumption? Also has the document from the Bank Of Canada stating the ranges of the G/R test note ever been published to the public?
As an owner of a G/R test note i am interested in the historical factor of this note.
If you are able to help out please fell free to post here or contact me directly at
canadianbanknotes@gmail.com
Thanks again
