How I scan images

First, and foremost, you should be aware that the newer scanning software (ie. PhotoShop CS, CS 2) have a "feature" that prevents scanning of newer paper money notes. You MUST use an older version of software to scan them.

I use a "Kodak 18% Grey Grey" to assist in scanning my notes. It is a thick card that helps me align my bills on the glass as square as possible, then I use the card as the background for the scan. The grey colour gives me a nice neutral background to make it easy to detect the edge of the actual bill. Most importantly, it does not cause the scanner to try to make any compensation for highlight and shadows areas which you would get if you use a solid white or a black background. Grey gives me excellent colour accuracy and density range first time, every time. Try it with any solid grey card you can find.

Paul, perhaps some information on the type of scanner you use.
I use an HP 4570C with mixed results. Often get shadows or glare from some images taken.

Doesn't seem to hurt note, but destroys the images of some coins. Suggestions?

Rick, scanning coins is a tricky thing (as you've found out) because they're 3 dimensional. Paper is only 2D.

I've found a few links on the topic as I don't scan any of my coins.

Hope these send you in the right direction.

Hi I am wondering if I could get some feedback on what type of scanners everyone uses.  I am in seach for the right scanner for banknotes and I was being bombarded with hp/epson/cannon/etc etc.

Heck scanners range from $100-300 each or there are all in one with scanner, copier and fax.  Well what a way to bombard someone with just wanting to get a scanner.

What is eveyone thoughts

Thanks
