Well I guess the bank begging gods are smiling upon me because I walked into one of my regular branches yesterday to learn that the nice manager from my branch, who was replaced by The Crusher, now works there!

She just finished telling me that they don't give out paper at that branch when I looked over an saw a man handing a teller a stack of Journey notes.  Since they hadn't even hit the chute yet, I was able to convince The manager to let me buy them.  Hehe.  32 Journey 50's all but 3 or 4 AU or better, approx. 10 UNC -- highlights are:

April 3rd finds:

I went to one of my banks and the teller let me look through a gigantic stack of birds $10, $20 and $50 notes…Maybe $7000 worth.  Most of them were in awful shape, but I took the best ones.  The highlight is the lower numbered $50 FHU 0005290. Too bad it has a tiny tear in the bottom margin…☹️

The teller also gave me five customer wrapped rolls of dimes…

I searched the 5 rolls of dimes and all I got was $1 worth of US coins…

April 2nd dime box hunt update:

I searched the two boxes of dimes that I brought home yesterday and this is what I found:

20 x US
17x 2017
13x 2021 Bluenose under sail non-colour and 7 x colour
5x 1968 nickel alloy
Nice 1971, 1973, 1975 and 1978 dimes
1962, 1964, 1965 silver and also one 1996 proof sterling silver dime!

Three out of the four silver dimes came out of one box and there was one silver in the second box.  Silver is still out there!

Towards the end of the Birds series in the late 90s, the use of "X" in prefixes to indicate replacement notes was discontinued. Thus, identifiable (*, X) replacements ended and the current era of "unidentifiable" replacements began.

"Unidentifiable" replacement ranges are noted in catalogues, such as Charlton: "BC-54eA-i, Knight-Dodge, ANP (between 4.320M and 4.540M)."

How are these replacements determined? According to Charlton:

"It has been established that notes in certain number ranges have been inserted in new bricks of otherwise consecutively numbered notes, often from a different series.

"The information presented in this catalogue on "unidentifiable" replacement notes has not been, and may never be, confirmed from official sources. It has been obtained by reputable researchers from many regions of Canada, by searching bricks of new, untouched notes.

"The number ranges may change slightly as further discoveries are made with continuing research."

I wanted to ask how these would appear: as Macdonald $10s in bundles of Desmond $10s? Or as Wilkins-Poloz $5s in bundles of Wilkins-Macklem $5s? Or as FFG $10s in bundles of FFKs?

How big are these "bricks?" Some of these ranges are large, comprising hundreds of thousands of notes.

Also, I would imagine it would take time for these to be discovered, reported, verified, and then published. How long would it take for some of these replacements to appear in catalogues, a few years?

One of my banks called me today.  The teller said that she had a bag of pennies so I went to pick them up.  When I got there, the teller offered me two boxes of dimes.  Let’s hope that something good is in these boxes!

March 30th Easter weekend coin hunting finds:

I searched through three boxes of dimes over the last couple of days and found…

1/2 Franc from Switzerland
10c from Bermuda
2017 commemoratives,
2021 Bluenose under sail
21 x 1968 nickel alloy dimes
And…one silver dime dated 1953!


I returned the three boxes of coins to one branch and went to a different branch to ask for old paper money.  While they had no paper, this branch did give me one more box of dimes.  Let’s see if there’s something good inside!

I managed to pick up a few paper notes from my bank today.  While I was there, I got three boxes of dimes and some regular spending cash.  To my surprise, I got a nice $20 repeater out of the bank machine.
