My son (5 years old) inherited these bills and I have done a bit of research on them with the help of some kind people on this site.  I planned on selling them for his college fund.  I found a collector that is willing to come to my small community TOMARROW to look at them.  I e-mailed him the list of bills and he called back quite excited, wants to come see them immediately & he asked me how much cash he should bring for them???  I have NO CLUE!   :o Any help or total estimation would be appreciated.  I just don't want to be "taken". Hi Vickyaho

Welcome to the forum and you've picked a great place to get honest and accurate information on prices for your notes. I must also say you have some desirable banknotes listed that many collectors would wish for. I see your son is only 5 and if this is for his college fund I wonder if you possibly considered keeping these as an investment or at least until the economy turns around. There are a lot of unanswered questions most importantly is the grading accurate this could be answered but with so little time it's impossible. I would just like to suggest you maybe take a little more time and not rush into any deals at this point until you weigh all your options. I believe at this particular time it's a buyers market as I've seen some very nice notes sell for far less then they would have just 10 months ago.

Just a suggestion from an old collector :)

Cheers Hounddog

I tend to agree with houndog, the market is soft.  Keep them for now but put them in proper holders to preserve them. Hope this helps.   polarbear

Quote
*T/X0006119 Beattie-Rasminsky AU I haven't heard of this replacement prefix before, is it a typo? If not this note could be worth thousands..

It is a common mistake to read the letter T in incorrectly it is probably a letter I and a *I/X  is quite scarce and worth $750. in AU.

Ten years ago both the *N/X and *I/X were in the book for $40. each, now $550. and $750. The $20 A/E doubled, *W/N $80. then and $350 now, and the *V/L and *T/T were $70 then and $500 now.

So if it were me I would wait if there is no hurry and I would get them out of the envelope and into proper storage sleeves.

Grading could cut these estimates in half and these are book prices so the more common notes would only sell for 50-80%. The higher priced ones should sell for 75-100% in better times and maybe 60-90% now.

These are my opinions only, I hope it helps.

HUGE THANKS to everyone who put out the effort to respond.
I have printed off the info. & use it when the collector comes.

I appreciate the comments of those who said to keep the collection...the only "problem" I have is that I live in a very remote area in British Columbia.  There are no dealers, conferences, collectors, or anyone near here.  The man willling to purchase has recently sold a local business & has started following his "passion" of collecting as he is now retired.  If I lived near a large center I could perhaps in the future be assured of selling them for more when my son is closer to using the funds...

I live 5 hours from Calgary Alberta so unless anyone knows someone there that would be interested in the collection, I think I should sell it while I can.....????

an interesting side point:  this inheritance is only the tip of the iceberg....apparently my eccentric aunt still has about 3 suitcases of bills/coins....wouldn't we love to see them :)

When it comes to banknotes it does not matter where you live. I have purchased collections from people that I have never meet, just talked to through email and the phone. You just have to be willing to work out an arrangement that works for both of you in shipping and payment of the notes for a evaluation.

As was mentioned, if you can, hold on to them, you will not loose any money; the rare note will still be rare in 15 years.

Just a word of counsel, if you are not interested in keeping any of the notes at all, and want to sell the whole collection and be over this whole thing, sell the whole collection in one lump. If you let people pick out the rare notes (cherry pick the collection), you will be left with the common material that won't move and you cannot sell.

VICKYAHO,

Welcome to the forum! I too am a BC'er but in Kelowna.

The people who have advised really know what they are talking about. I know it seems like a problem to deal with all these bills. Your son is only 5 and there is no real need to rush. If as you say this is only the tip of the iceberg there will be more bills and coins to deal with. I would hold off on the sale until you know what exactly you have. People on this site would be happy to help you with some valuations to get a rough total of what you're looking at. In fact it is always interesting (fun) to see what other bills other people have, for all of us. That's one of the main reasons I tend to lurk on this site.

If you are really convinced that you should "liquidate" these bills I would recommend this: Use the values that have been provided here and cherry pick the pile of bills for your son. Take those bills to the bank and get a safety deposit box. If you don't have proper holders at the moment don't worry about it. I believe you can order them from someone here on the forum, just ask. I'd eventually store each bill individually in a proper holder and just leave them in the safety deposit box for now.

When your son is older, buy a current copy of the Charlton Catalogue of Canadian Government Paper Money, sit down with him and go through the bills and tell him about your eccentric aunt. You and your son will be amazed at some of the values some of your bills will have in the future. It will give him a far better appreciation of your aunt and the bills themselves.

I speak from experience, like your son, I inherited a small stack of bills. Believe me I was shocked at the values of some of those notes. I could have sold them when they were given to me, (I could have used the money at the time), but I didn't. And I'm happy I didn't.

The collector you have found, I'm sure is a nice guy, but there is a reason why he is in a hurry to come to you. He's probably hoping to get a deal from you. I'd slow down, have him look at the bills and let you know what he is willing to offer. Keep in mind there will be a reason why he will be more interested in some bills then others (those are the ones I'd keep).

Anyways good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Rod
