Title: Next Denominational Letter
Post by: BWJM on December 10, 2004, 03:21:15 am
Jonathan made a post earlier today regarding the fact that Z is now being used for the first time as a denominational letter in the 3-digit prefixes, and he was hypothesising that it would be the last new one:

I guess that denominational letter Z will be the final brand new denominational letter ever for the Bank of Canada's three letter prefixes, don't ya think?  ::)

Well, considering that every other letter except for Q has already been used, that seems like a good assumption.  Q has never ever appeared on a serial number for a note issued by the Bank of Canada.

A - $1 (AAx, BAx, EAx)
B - $2 (ABx, BBx, CBx, EBx)
C - $1 (ACx, BCx, ECx)
D - $10 (ADx, BDx, EDx, FDx)
E - $10 (AEx, BEx, EEx, FEx)
F - $1 (AFx, BFx), $50 (EFA)
G - $2 (AGx, BGx, EGx)
H - $5 (JHS), $50 (AHx, EHx, FHx)
I - $20 (AIx, EIx)
J - $100 (AJx, BJx, EJx)
K - $100 (BKx), $1000 (EKx)
L - $1 (ALx)
M - $1 (AMx), $50 (FMx)
N - $5 (ANx, ENx, FNx, GNx, HNx)
O - $5 (AOx, EOx, FOx, GOx, HOx), $20 (BOC), $50 (BOC)
P - $5 (EPx, FPx, GPx), $100 (JPH)
Q - Not used
R - $2 (ARx, BRx)
S - $20 (ASx, ESx)
T - $10 (ATx, ETx)
U - $2 (AUx, BUx)
V - $20 (AVx, EVx)
W - $20 (AWx, EWx)
X - $1 (AXA, EXA)
Y - $20 (AYx, EYx)
Z - $20 (AZx)

(RED series are currently being issued.)

(This is ONLY reflective of 3-digit prefixes.  The denominational letters switched around substantially during the move to 3-digit prefixes.)

As has been done for the $50 and $100, we could see the recycling of former $1, $2 and $1000 denominational letters.  This means that the following series are still available for use by a denomination other than the
original:
CAx, FAx, GAx, HAx
FBx, GBx, HBx
CCx, FCx, GCx, HCx
CFx, FFx, GFx, HFx
CGx, FGx, GGx, HGx
CKx, FKx, GKx, HKx
BLx, CLx, ELx, FLx, GLx, HLx
BMx, CMx, EMx, GMx, HMx
CRx, ERx, FRx, GRx, HRx
CUx, EUx, FUx, GUx, HUx

EM* prefixes may be impossible since the "M" series is now on the $50's and printer letter "E" was completed on our $50's back in '93.

EL* prefixes may be possible on our Journey $100's after EJZ, however, but don't bank on it yet.

ER* and EU* may be possible on our $100's distant in the future, but again, don't bank on it yet.

Since the BoC may be recycling old denominational letters from retired issues, there still may be a chance that these letters may appear on our $5's, $10's and $20's in the future, but we'll just have to wait and see what the future holds.  ;)

Regards, Jonathan  ;)

Don't forget there is a chance to see "D" as a printer designation letter as well.

Most likely if they were to use up all the combinations of current prefixes they will just assign new printer designation letters.

such as JKLM and NPRS

D printer letter: Not likely any time soon.  They've barely dipped into C yet, and only with a single defunct denomination (CBA-CBK, 1986 $2s).
