Title: Three Journey ANU notes found in circulation
Post by: Dean on August 02, 2006, 04:36:23 pm
Hi,

I received these notes at Canadian Tire in Toronto. ANU6960662 6960667 6960688.  I originally got 1, then asked the cashier for more 5's.  I got 2 more.  They are within the range of the Lasting Impressions sets.  Are these broken from sets or has this prefix been released into circulation?  It seems highly unlikely to get 3 such notes in change at one place.

any input would be appreciated

VERY Interesting,

Those ARE Lasting Impressions notes. Looks like some kids spent their gifts???  :-?

Hi,

I looked into the till as the cashier pulled out fivers. (I actually had to wait while she served another 2 customers because I noticed the ANU prefix as I checked my change)  I didn't see any Birds fivers in the till.

Interesting isn't it?...I recall reading somewhere, perhaps in Charlton, that not all 50,000 notes were issued for the Lasting Impressions sets.  Can somebody verify this?

From what I heard, the Bank of Canada did issue and print as many as 50,000 sets of the $5 Lasting Impression Notes - later, Canada Post dumped a lot at just above face value... and buyers took out the fives in order to keep the plastic note holders (which I hear are museum quality plastic).   Most likely, what you received was a buyer of these notes just spending these notes at face.

Speak of the devil,

I got back in change - ANU6995588 (Journey Series Note).   The condition is EF+.  I think this serial number is one of the highest known?

You are right about that, still within that "lasting impressions" range.
Here's an open question for everyone... should these ANU circulated (old lasting impressions) notes be worth more?
In my opinion:  No!

I Agree with JB  :)

There is nothing special about the notes. The notes never held much premium in the LI sets anyways...  ::)

It still is a short run prefix.

Forsure, no doubt about that. If i got one i would hang onto it myself. Would i price it though above $5, probably not. I have to note that this is a circulated note that was not meant to be circulated. Like getting a 1992 caribou quarter or getting a "w" mint mark coin in change.

Though it is a short run, too many have been held onto by collectors.

Agreed. I doubt these notes will EVER command any real premium.  :-/

A slight off this topic. My question is what would the Catalgue No. be for these ANU and BEH for both years 1989 and 2001. For example, for the $10 1989 BEH it would be designated BC-57c. But what of the 2001 version? The Charlton list BEI - BEJ as BC63b-i just short of BEH, Could be the same Catalgue Number BC63b-i or something else?

I recently received 2 of these ANUs in circulation, spent one and kept the other.

It's sad really that these Banknotes can be so casually circulated as worthless (face value) and really lose their significance without the matching one. :'(

I bought one of the LI $5 sets but stopped short of paying the premium for the $10s.
