Title: Something Wrong? Or common
Post by: Mikeysonfire on November 24, 2006, 10:37:20 pm
I got some new 5s today and I notice that some of the strips on the back dont line up. The front of the note, the strips are lined up.

Is this common?

It's common.  They can also be seen on other Journey notes.  No extra premium on those notes unless it's really off.

What do you mean by "really off"?

Actually, i put these two bills away last year. Serial # are (more or less) close, but both security strips are not lined up (a few mm between them). Is that "really off" or just "off"?

Very Interesting.

I would say it is still a minor error, but does look like an error none the less. The Stripe is angled. That is why it does not line up. Could have been from the note being mis-aligned when the stripe was being placed....  :-?

X-Savior had mentioned about the angle, would you be able to measure the difference? In my opinion an angle would have a greater premium. Though I do see the strips vary from time to time.

The imbedded security strip's location changes from note to note. Any brick searcher can tell you that when a brick is viewed from the side the ends of the imbedded strips form a zigzag pattern. I suspect that this is done on purpose to facilitate the cutting process. This is not an error by any stretch of the imagination.

I agree with JWS. This is normal but it is strange that this note has the stripe angled.

Usually they have it straight but each stripe from note to note is slightly offset going back and fourth. so there is not a huge buildup in one single spot.  :-/

I measured the distance from the left to the very border of the stripe on both bills.
I also took 2 measures on each bill, 1 on top & 1 on the bottom:

#...259
left to stripe -top: 18mm
left to stripe -bottom: 18mm

#...648
left to stripe -top: 23mm
left to stripe -bottom: 23mm

So there's no angle, but a precise 5mm distance between both strips. Maybe the "angle illusion" came from the fact my bills weren't lined up properly :P .
I wouldn't say that this is an error, though they're the fartest strips I've find by now, which still makes them interesting to me.  ;)

Thanks to you all for your comments

Ok, So I am talking about the $10 notes first of all...  :-?

And if you are telling me the first $10 note has roughly the same position as the second (As far as the position of the stripe at the top of the note and the bottom being the same) then you pulled a fancy camera trick because it looks like the bottom of the stripe is way to the left from the top of it.  ::)  ;D

I didn't have a scan at that time. Here's one:

Judge for yourself. I must admit, despite what I measured, that it looks as if the strip on the ...648 note slightly goes towards the left as it reaches the bottom.  :-/

I think this happens every other note. As you see here with the 5s.

Yes, this time the picture looks better. The first picture seemed to play camera tricks. It looks pretty good. Much better this time.
