Anybody know what day these will hit the banks? All I've heard is "March 2012"...
-
Keep watching the Bank of Canada's Media Centre page. That's where, in a media advisory, they announced the issue date of the $100. That announcement came only two weeks ahead of the issue date.
-
The polymer $50 notes will be released on March 26: http://www.bankofcanada.ca/media-room/upcoming-events/ (http://www.bankofcanada.ca/media-room/upcoming-events/)

Excellent!

Any predictions for the prefix, I am thinking FMS

I think so too. FMS-FMZ and then GHA-GHZ (or possibly EMA-EMZ).
-
I'm glad to hear this information. I saw someone listing polymer $50 notes on another auction site. Some people just can't wait. Oh, and the first prefix will be JHS :D
-
I tried to pick out the serial numbers from the following video showing polymer $50s going into the shredding machine at 2:30, but couldn't read them after much trying:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWTn5vM76yA&feature=plcp&context=C38fc0deUDOEgsToPDskJ-LGOHoBTjaUqc5Hl6nfZk
What's interesting about the $50s I saw in that video is it was probably an early production run with a number of differences in design. If you look closer, the "Bank of Canada" intaglio text extends into the transparent band, there's a white border on the back around the maple leaf window, and the building in the hologram is the West Block like the $100s (the final design has a different building, I'm not sure which one it is?)
-
(the final design has a different building, I'm not sure which one it is?)
It's one of the four north towers of the Centre Block, on the side facing the Ottawa River.

So the CBN is taking over the Prefix "A" from the BABN?

So the CBN is taking over the Prefix "A" from the BABN?
I don't think this is the case, prefix "A" must still be printed by BABN (BA). Both CBN and BA are printing the initial supply of polymer notes until 2013. Starting in 2013 it will be exclusively CBN.
-
I am right now looking at AHU 9863016. The rep said this is the new note to be circulated this month

These were taken by him personally at a trade show where the Bank of Canada was in attendance for the purposes of introducing the new notes to cash handlers. This is the real deal.
-
My observations? The background looks identical to the $100s - same basic shade of beige. Without having one of the notes in my hand to compare alongside the $100, I'll venture to say I fear that these will be easily confused.

Thanks for posting this. I agree with Brent. Unless the light was bad, or the note shown is actually a test note and not the final design, we may be up for a big disappointment. I thought the $100 was bland but the $50 is even worse. I expected a much more dominant and brighter red but it's mostly beige like the hundred. Ugly.
-
When the BoC originally released the images of the new polymer series, the $50's were red... I will really be disappointed if they are this colour, and not the red that they are supposed to be.
-
From the BOC video I posted earlier, sadly it looks like it will the the same dull washed-out background/design we've seen on the $100s. I'm disappointed with the lack of liveliness in the colour/portrait design in the new $100s, looks like the $50s will be no exception. I'll miss the deep and rich red colour of the $50s we've seen since the multicolours.

I also see some shiny $20 notes on the table in these 2 pics. Those can't be the new polymer 20s?? They look like the current Journey 20s printed on polymer, so I expect they are just "concept notes" or something...
-
Hi members
Sorry for taking so long to get back to you with the picture. Thanks Brent for doing that for me. Ok here is what got from the ever so nice rep from the B Of C.
the note is more red but not really as attractive as I would of wished. compared to the Hong Kong $10 it is pinkish in comparison.
the note also has the visually impaired reader capabilities.
this is "a real note that will be circulated to on March 26 2012"-- B of Canada rep
My observations... The window seemed a bit larger then the $100. If you look at the serial number sure looks like a great range for a replacement.. Ok just me speculating.
That is about it.
Oh the display had info on counterfeit detection and training . yes i grabbed on or two for my reading pleasure.
cheers

Thanks for posting that picture Hounddog, that is the one I was talking about in my post.

I thought that the BABN didn't make the investment in the new equipment for printing the Polymer notes and they were just doing the mop up of the Journey series.
-
"As a result of changing conditions in the local Canadian bank note market, BA International will cease printing bank notes for the Canadian and international market at the end of 2012," the statement read.
"The introduction of polymer bank notes in Canada significantly changes the local bank note market. Given that these notes are expected to last longer, the requirement to reprint bank notes is expected to drop from 2013 onwards," it continued.
However, the Bank of Canada and BA International have both confirmed to CBC News they are working together to save from 30 to 40 of the 190 jobs in Ottawa. The plan would include BA International performing additional services for the Bank of Canada.

So will all Canadian banks have access to these 50 dollar notes on March 26?
-
So will all Canadian banks have access to these 50 dollar notes on March 26?
It is unlikely that all banks will have the new $50 notes on the release date.
In most cases the larger cities tend to get them first and outlying communities shortly after that...when the $100's were released last Nov it took 2 weeks before I saw any in my area, yet I did get some the day of release in Toronto...
It also has to do with the delivery schedule the bank has with armoured services.

Bank of Canada to Begin Circulating New $50 Polymer Bank Note
OTTAWA – The Bank of Canada will begin circulating the new $50 bill – the first of the polymer bank note series that will be available in automated banking machines – on Monday, 26 March 2012.
A ceremony to officially issue the new $50 note, which highlights Canada’s commitment to Arctic research and the development and protection of northern communities, will be held at the Canadian Coast Guard’s Québec port facility, and will feature the CCGS Amundsen – the Arctic research vessel depicted on the back of the new bill.
Speaking at the event will be Mark Carney, Governor of the Bank of Canada; Shelly Glover, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance; Marc Grégoire, Commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard; and Louis Fortier, Scientific Director of ArcticNet.
Audio and video webcasts of the event will be available on the Bank's website. At the conclusion of the event, members of the media will have an opportunity to meet with experts to find out more about the various features of the new bill, participate in a tour of the CCGS Amundsen and purchase new $50 polymer bank notes.

We should also expect the bills to be available only after the launch ceremony. When the new $100s came out, RBC and Scotiabank were the first ones to have them at their main branches, and the memos they got were to only distribute them after 1:30pm.

Banks in the GTA will have them on the 26th as long as it coincides with their cash parcel delivery schedule and orders.

If you look really closely, those $20's you see are actually those lenticular cards that illustrate the security features of the $20 Journey notes that were issued by the Bank of Canada to educate the public, financial institutions and retailers.
Look at the picture that shows the back of the $50 and you will see the top part of the card on the $20 that's closest to the bottom of the picture

Bank of Canada Issues $50 Polymer Bank Note
Ottawa, Ontario - Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney today officially announced the new $50 polymer bank note’s entry into circulation, during an event at the Canadian Coast Guard’s Québec port facility. These new notes will be available at financial institutions from coast to coast to coast starting today.
Governor Carney was joined at the event by Shelly Glover, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance; Marc Grégoire, Commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard; and Louis Fortier, Scientific Director of ArcticNet.
The front of the new $50 note features a portrait of Sir William Lyon Mackenzie King, while the back depicts the Arctic research icebreaker CCGS Amundsen, in port during the ceremony, as well as other imagery that reflects Canada’s commitment to Arctic research and the development and protection of northern communities. Most importantly, the new $50 bill, like the rest of the polymer series, features a unique combination of state-of-the-art security features, making them the most secure bank notes ever issued in Canada.
“Just as the work of scientists on the Amundsen is expanding the frontiers of Arctic research, this new polymer series is expanding the frontiers of bank note technology,” said Governor Carney.
The Governor encouraged Canadians to familiarize themselves with these new features, the most prominent of which are two transparent areas: one that extends from the top to the bottom of the note and contains complex holographic features, and the other in the shape of a maple leaf.
“Counterfeiting rates have been reduced by 90 per cent since 2004. Issuing this new series of bank notes enables us to continue to stay ahead of counterfeiters,” Governor Carney said. “And by regularly checking the leading-edge security features on these new notes, Canadians can help protect themselves from counterfeiting threats,” he added.
Parliamentary Secretary Glover noted that much has been done in recent years to combat counterfeiting and maintain public confidence in Canada’s bank notes, which helps to avoid the detrimental impact that counterfeiting can have on the integrity of an economy.
“These new polymer notes represent an important part of this effort and a significant barrier to counterfeiting. The striking imagery of this new $50 bill reflects Canada's commitment to the North,” said Parliamentary Secretary Glover.
Commissioner Grégoire expanded on the note’s theme, saying, “Canada’s northern frontier has played an important role in the shaping of our national identity. And it is a true honour to have the CCGS Amundsen, Canada’s Arctic research platform, illustrated on the note in this, the 50th anniversary of the Canadian Coast Guard.” He also spoke of how the Canadian Coast Guard’s partnership with ArcticNet provides the global scientific community with unprecedented access to research opportunities in the North.
With the $50 denomination being more frequently used in automated banking machines, Canadians were also reminded that each time a new series of bank notes is issued the equipment that processes and dispenses them may require adjustments or upgrades. The Bank of Canada has worked closely with financial institutions and manufacturers of bank note processing equipment to help them make this transition to polymer.
The $20 note will be issued later this year, with the remaining bank notes in the series – the $5 and $10 notes – to be issued by the end of 2013. The designs and detailed images of these notes will not be released until their official unveiling dates.
The themes of all of the denominations are:
$100 Medical Innovation – celebrates Canadian innovations in the field of medicine (Portrait: Sir Robert Borden)
$50 CCGS Amundsen, Research Icebreaker – reflects Canada’s commitment to Arctic research and the development and protection of northern communities (Portrait: Sir William Lyon Mackenzie King)
$20 The Canadian National Vimy Memorial – evokes the contributions and sacrifices of Canadians in conflicts throughout our history (Portrait: HM Queen Elizabeth II)
$10 The Canadian train – represents Canada’s great technical feat of linking its eastern and western frontiers by what was, at the time, the longest railway ever built (Portrait: Sir John A. Macdonald)
$5 Canadarm2 and Dextre – symbolize Canada’s continuing contribution to the international space program through robotics innovation (Portrait: Sir Wilfrid Laurier)
More information on the new polymer bank note series can be obtained by contacting Jeremy Harrison at 613 782-8782 or communications@bankofcanada.ca.

I wonder what's going on- I visited all my trusty Bay St. bank branches that typically have the new notes on release day. Turned up empty handed, even after 2pm. :-[
-
Scotiabank main commercial branch in downtown Vancouver had them. I picked up 12 at 10:15 this morning. The teller didn't have any with her but she was able to get some from the head teller after a 5 minute wait.
-
I tried at the RBC branch that I got my $100's from on release day today at about 0930 and they hadn't a clue. New fifties? (How long have the 'Canadian money is changing' adverts been playing on their ATMs)? I'm really going to be ticked off if I try at the ATM after work and a new $50 comes out. That means 5 more transactions. I'm really going to be ticked off if the holograms are scratched.
John
Edit: Fixed some grammatical errors :-(
-
Got some from CIBC at Commerce Court just now. Better than the $100s in design for sure. I don't know what they were doing with the portrait on the $100s, but WLM King is looking a lot better on these notes.
-
Maybe Mr Peral broke out the old burins rather that using the computerized engraving software... On second thought, probably not, there's a video on the bank of canada's site that shows him using the software for the portrait of King...

ATMs didn't have them today either. I checked a number of RBC, CIBC, TD and BMO machines and all were still churning out the good 'ol paper 50s with the apparently constipated WLM King. :P It will be interesting to see how quickly they show up in ATMs, one bank branch I went to with older machines removed 50s from their machines a few week back.
I'm left wondering who the heck at the BOC approved the final production $100s. That portrait is an embarrassment- it looks almost nothing like the unveiled design. The $50 is much closer to the unveiled design, but the paleish colour is still a letdown. At least the reverse is better thought out on the $50, the $100 looks like someone opened up Word and stuck some random clipart together.
-
King does look better on the new $50. It looks like he has shed 30 lbs since 2004. Of course on the 2004 note he gained 50 lbs since the 1988 $50, still leaving him 20 lbs overweight.
He looked best on the 1975 $50.
-
Well, I visited a couple of my bank's ATMs at different locations and I did manage to snag an UNC J/C Journey $50. To that, I visited the RBC next to where I work this morning (Mar 27th), and the head teller had said she had received the new $50 notes, but they had yet to be counted. So I asked her to set aside 6 new 50's so I can get them before they go through those super ATMs.
Might make a withdrawal from the regular ATM after work. Different bundle, different serial number range. Can't hurt.
As for King looking better, the weight gain from 2004 was due to all the german food he was enjoying. :D (The die was made in Germany by Gieseke & Devrient - you know the parent company of BA International???)

Newbie here. :)
I tried to obtain a new $50 from my TD Bank branch at around 11:00 am yesterday (March 26), but they said they don't have any new ones in yet. I guess I have to wait few more days...
-
I got some from an HSBC and a TD Canada Trust bank today. TD said they got theirs today. Royal did not have any yesterday. AMC's and AME's
-
I found an ATM at the TD Centre in Toronto handing them out today. Out of a row of 8 ATMs, there was only that one giving out the polymer $50s. Managed to snag a 3-digit radar. :)

Yippee! The head teller had 6 of the new notes ready for me when I went into the RBC on Milverton Rd in Mississauga. Already entered into the SNDB. I like them! Will see what comes out of the ATMs tonight.
-
Got a 3 digit radar (AMA) and a (unconfirmed) replacement note today. (AHZ)
-
Collected something like 200 notes today. Got 2 3-digit radars at the end, but no luck finding the apparent first prefix (AHU).
I did get a very narrow range of $50s from Scotiabank branches in downtown Toronto, each branch seemed be off by 1000 notes. All have been entered into the database.
-
I was doubting the actual issue of the AH prefix but I see we have 1 registered by wizard. Unless of course he acquired it from a different avenue.
-
The other thing is that the 1 note is the highest and lowest serial registered and in the quantity section it shows it as 2 notes. I wonder if this is screwing up the real count?
-
I'd wager most, if not all ATMs that dispense 50s in downtown Toronto are giving out the polymer 50s. I sampled a good number of them today, and they're giving them out without a hitch.
-
I can confirm AHUs in circulation. Only had the cash to buy 2 :-[, but they're out there.
-

My AHZ note was found within my AMA brick. It is most likely an unconfirmed Replacement note. Hopefully its a SNR replacement since the FB/BP numbers did not match the AMA's numbers.
-

It was funny that after reading this post, I got AHUs and AHWs from a bank teller and AHVs from an ATM within 30 minutes, after 2 days of searching dozens of bank branches and ATMs and ending up with nothing but the AMA/AMB/AMC/AME notes.

Has anyone else noticed the lithograph printing flaking off where the tactile dots are? This seems to be happening on a lot of uncirculated notes I've gotten my hands on.
I've noticed the tactile dots are a bit more pronounced on the $50s compared to the $100s.
