Title: Movie about the world's largest counterfeiting operation
Post by: Seth on March 14, 2008, 01:51:43 am
Last night I saw Die Fälscher (The Counterfeiters) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0813547/), a 2007 German movie based on the true story of Operation Bernhard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Bernhard), the world's largest ever counterfeiting operation.  It was Nazi Germany's plan to produce and circulate forged Allied hard currencies in attempt to destabilize the Allies' economies.

I highly recommend it.  The scope of the counterfeiting operation was amazing.  Any of you would appreciate the film for this reason alone.  But the crux of the film was that the experts doing the counterfeiting were all Jewish prisoners at Sachsenhausen concentration camp.

If you live close to a theatre that plays foreign films, go and see if it is playing.

These were first-class counterfeits in the German tradition of technological excellence. There's a good reference book available which allows you to determine whether the notes in your collection are genuine or fake.

They also went into the prisons and looked for the best counterfeiters of the time and used the best machines.
Some of those notes are still around too.

You must have seen a dubbed version, different from what I saw.  The whole movie was in German, with some characters speaking Russian and some speaking Hebrew.  Subtitles were all in English.

Correction to my original post:  It is actually an Austrian film.

Thanks Seth:

I will have to check them out!  I could only find foreign copies before, and they won't work in our DVD players but I have been hearing that there is some USA ones now available!

ANYDVD software will remove all region codes, and play any movie anywhere.

As a guy making a living doing video conversions, I can tell you that region codes are not the only problem. DVDs must still be formatted as either NTSC or PAL so that they can output to the appropriate TV (which do not do any conversion). You may be able to watch a PAL DVD on your computer's DVD player though.

Any questions, or if you have a PAL DVD you need converted, drop me a email.
