Title: The new $100--who's got it?
Post by: Jason on March 17, 2004, 02:15:01 pm
If you are lucky enough to get your $100, could you let me (us) know when, where, and from what bank?  I am curious to see who gets them first, and where they have been released.  (e.g., which provinces, which cities, which banks, etc.)

Hello All!

Got some of the new hundreds in Winnipeg today.

EJA 0868844 to 0868883, Jenkins/Dodge, Issue of 2004, printed in 2003.

Small CIBC and Royal branches did NOT have any.
Main CIBC and TD branches at Portage and Main did NOT have any?!, but the Scotia and Royal at Portage and Main did have them.  Got a couple from each, as reflected above.

All fp# 53, bp# 18

Went to three banks in Oakville today... no luck.  At the Bank of Montreal, I approached the teller and asked is she had any new $100 bills and she said "yes" (I held my breath) and she reached into her drawer and pulled out a relatively crisp 1988 $100 bill.  I said "No! a NEW one", and she said "well this one is pretty new"!!!  Oh well........

Well, I don't have it... not a single bank in Kitchener or Waterloo, Ontario have the new $100s.  Most claim to be possibly getting them within the next few days "if they are shipped... all depends on what gets sent".  Some didn't realize new $100s we being released, or they had no knowledge of when they might get them.  3 banks promised to call me when they got the new $100s.  One bank already promised me that they'd have them on Friday.

Another observation I found rather absurd was that banks never get any new money and that I'd have to find some other way to get the new notes, maybe by talking to the Bank of Canada branch in Toronto.  Hello?!?  How do you think money gets INTO circulation?  Banks and ATMs dish this stuff out all the time.  Obviously that particular bank employee knew NOTHING about how the process works.  ::)

The tale of Whitby and Ajax mirrors that of Kitchener and Waterloo.  But since I have the time off, I will check back until I get them.  Ajax has four major banks (CIBC, TD-Canada Trust, Royal Bank, Scotiabank) all within a few minutes of each other. I will head back tomorrow.

Okay folks, here's the scoop for Vancouver forum members:

I visited the Vancouver main branches of Scotiabank and Royal, and a few downtown branches of TD-CT and VanCity.  Nobody has the new notes yet, nobody knows when they're coming, nobody seems to care.

However, the Bank of Canada has an information booth set up in Pacific Centre Mall.  I stopped by at 11:30 am.  They had two samples of the new note that I held in my hands.  Get this:  The two they had were Jenkins/Dodge, BJY0042***   :o  Unfortunately, they wouldn't sell me either of them.  However, they did say that they sold a number of the notes to the public earlier in the morning.  They couldn't confirm if the prefixes on the notes they sold were BJY or something else.  So, it's possible that there could be a handful of BJY J/D notes floating around in Vancouver.

I just got off the phone with the Bank of Canada's regional office here in Vancouver, and they confirmed that it is their intention to have more of the notes for sale at the information table in the mall sometime today.    However, the notes are currently (as of 12:35pm PST) in transit from Ottawa, and while they are expecting them to arrive sometime this afternoon, they can't guarantee they'll be here.

The info table at the mall will close today at 7PM.  The regional office said that if the notes aren't available there by the end of the day, they will be on sale tomorrow at the Bank of Canada's regional office at suite 2710, 200 Granville Street, Vancouver.  Yippee!  ;D

I went to a small Scotiabank branch around lunch time today and asked them if they had the new $100's, but she said "no", which is what I figured after I called the main branch in downtown St. John's yesterday, but I did get to have a slice of cake and lime punch for St. Paddy's day - Yum.

But, on the upside, the main Scotiabank branch in St. John's told me that they WILL have the new $100 notes tomorrow.  The staff person seems pretty confident about this, I hope.

I will let all of ye know when I get my new $100's.  I had better hit the sack early tonight - I have a big morning event awaiting me tomorrow...

Later, Jonathan

What a smozzle.....
If I recall the wednesday the $5 Journey was released they were in almost every bank I visited.
Couldn`t find any in Edmonton even after a rep. from the Bank of Montreal faithfully said they would be availible. :(
Nobody even knows when or if they might ever get any let alone what they look like.
So much for faith in our money.....you could print some crap and write $100 and take them to your 7-11!!!!!
 Frustrated in Edmonton :'(

And the story continues! Visited twelve branches of five banks in Sarnia and none had the new $100, even though I had put in a special request for them last week, at four main branches. (As these folks had suggested I do.) At one smaller branch the teller told me that the new $100 bill wasn't going to be issued till next month. ::) In Sarnia, she may be right!
So much for my frustration.  :(

I got brand new $5 and $10 bills on the issue date. Back then I was only a regular customer of a small credit Union. Now I work in a Scotiabank branch and I cannot get one. That's very frustrating !
:'(
At least the person in charge of all the banknotes thinks we will receive some notes on Friday. 8)

My dad mentioned something to me a few minutes ago... he thought he heard that the BoC had issued a recall on the notes because of something wrong with them.  I immediately shot the idea down, but then I remembered that they briefly did that with the $10s if I'm not mistaken.  Has anyone heard anything to substantiate this claim or is my Dad just trying to annoy me again?

No luck for me either, I went to all the banks, most didn't know when they'd be getting any in? The only bank who said when they'd be getting them in was the Royal Bank, they said tomorrow. But I don't get it, almost all the banks I visited have the literature/brochures on the counters, but not one bank has the new bills? They release date of the brochures said today, but no luck? I know most banks have to put in a big money order for the week and you'd think the BOC would make sure when they ordered more money that most branches would have the new 100? Oh well.

Hi,

For what its worth...

I talked with a lady from the BOC in Vancouver this afternoon and was told that a number of banks in Vancouver will be receiving new 100's by Friday.

In addition, all of the 100's that were at the display in Pacific center were gone by 12:30 ish and they didn't expect any new notes as of 4:30 this afternoon.  She only had one note left at that time... hmmm...

Regards...

Well has I said earlier, no banks in Gatineau has them.
I guess that I'll do like steve11 and go directly to the Currency Museum of the BoC to get my new $100. Unfortunately it won't be till saturday.

Hi,

I got six new 100's today at the main branch of CIBC at Commerce Court in Toronto.  Serial # EJE4988038-42 and EJA0103905.  Kind of wavy like they were exposed to humidity or something but still, I got them on the first day!

Cheers,
Dean.

Hi,
This is the last note in the run of 5 that I got.  The EJA note is separate (possible insert?).  This one will be spent because it has many small ripples and counting creases.  I think it will be fun just because nobody has seen them yet, to be the first to spend one.

Cheers, Dean.

Hi, it is I.

I finally got my new $100's from the Scotiabank main branch in downtown St. John's today.

I was hoping to get prefix EJA like I was expecting, but the prefix was BJY.  The serial numbers are:

BJY3425801-03

plate numbers:

bp: 59
fp: 80

I guess we should soon see EJ*'s in the very near future!

I was successful in getting a new hundred in Vancouver yesterday.  After trying during noonhour at CIBC and Scotiabank without any luck, I was rewarded with a crisp new EJA at the main branch of Bank of Montreal.

Serial number is EJA1498399.   :D

Just a quick observation.  The intaglio print on the new 100 seems more pronounced than the previous Journey series notes.  May be just that its brand new, but my impression is that the BoC has tried to enhance the feel of the intaglio particularly on the "100" numerals and the coat of arms.

Anyone else notice this or any other point of interest??

I GOT MINE!!!!

My aunt works at a TD-Canada Trust, and she called me up this morning.  They haven't gotten theirs yet, but someone came in this morning to DEPOSIT some!  Brent figures it was a collector who withdrew a whole bunch--picked the notes he wanted, and returned the rest.  Maybe it could even be one of you!  Anyway, I got my new $100, and it rests proudly in my banknote album, waiting for its green and red brothers to join them later this year!

OK, I'm back and I've managed to get 4 (although if I was rich enough, I could have bought 200) EJA notes.

EJA0481250-1 and EJA0481971-2
No radar available, no inserts in the two bricks, no BJYs, no JPHs.

Cdn_Guy:  I'll visit you after 4:00 today as I've got a class starting in a few minutes.

Ah, I went to a TD Canada Trust branch this morning, withdrew $2500, and went to downtown Toronto in search of new notes. I first went to the Canada Trust at Bay, they didn't have them, I went to the RBC accross the street, they had them, but they hadn't been counted yet, I went to the CIBC not far away, I was only allowed 2 EJA05-----, then it was off to Scotiabank, where I was allowed as many I wanted, I got numbers EJA4165927-EJA4165949. I spent the 2 $100s I got from CIBC, since they were rather wavy, and Dean mentioned they might have been exposed to humidity. Then, I was off to start spending the notes, I went to Chinatown for lunch with a few other people, I used a new $100 bill, the cashier seemed so excited, she showed it to another employee, and they were fighting over it (which was totally priceless ;D), I went to the Chinese consulate on St. George street to get my passport renewed, this time, I got a flat refusal, as the official would not accept it for a $65 fee. Then I headed off to Wal-Mart to buy a radio, the cashier also seemed excited when recieving a new $100 bill. I also spent the other $100 bill I got yesterday since it was in my wallet, and a bit crinkled, it was a BJY2------.

Still no luck from my end....  I went to all four main branches in downtown Oakville (TD, Royal, CIBC & Scotia bank) and none had the new notes.   Then (this sounds really SICK!!!) on the drive back to my office I spotted a Brinks truck and followed it to a Scotia bank branch at 3rd line & Upper Middle Road, waited until the driver came out and in the small hope that he might have delivered some new notes, went into that branch to enquire....... alas, no luck.   Might have to bite the bullet and drive into downtown Toronto tomorrow afternoon.

Hello all.

Went back to the two small branches today.  CIBC had a full bundle of BJY2421000 to 1099.  I was disappointed to learn that it was the only bundle they had (next bundle had the RADAR).  Next stop, the Royal.  They too had a few, and got BJY1526245.  AGAIN, visions of the RADAR danced in my head!!!!  I asked if I could trouble them to give me the note that ended in 251, a mere 6 notes away.  They didn't have it.  SOMEBODY was playing with me today!  :)

Still lots of fun though!

I do not know how true this is going to be across Canada; But when I was at the BoC the other day..they said not to expect any radars as they had all been pulled. NOW I am wondering  if this is true only for this particular outlet (the Currency Museum) or if its true across the board.....

IF anyone does get a radar...please let us know in the radar sectio of this forum...

If after 6 months of NO radars showing up....I'll leave it to others much more ANGRY to get into this further...

Well both Royal Bank locations where I live had the new $100's today. I got five notes BJY1524794,
BJY1524796-99 None of the other banks had them as of today, but some said on Friday. A friend of mine who is a teller at the Royal said the teller dispensing machine had the new 100's. She said the older style hundreds, the bird series one where in the cash cage and were being sent back. They got a memo to send in all the bird series 100's back to the BOC and give the new 100's to customers.

I agree.......... I have nice new $10s and $5 in my collection, the intaglio relief seems much heavier on the 100s, on the Coat of Arms, and the small and large 100s.

Just got off the phone with the BoC and they expect to be putting out the $100 Lasting Impressions sets (around $250 per) shortly.  Not sure how many sets they will be creating though.  In addition, it looks unlikely that any uncut press sheets will be made available due to their high cost ($4,000+).  I had asked if they had though about breaking the sheets down into 1/2 sheets or ??? They are going to get back to me early next week about that possibility.

Cheers

I went to some banks and credit unions in Shawinigan, but I didn't got any new 100s.   The tellers told me that they usually get their orders of notes on Tuesday and it's takes a more day to put what they get in their automatic distributors.  Maybe tomorrow...

And about the feeling of the new 100$ note, you're right joeF, the numerals are much more easily felt.  I went to the booth held by the Bank of Canada at the last Nuphilex show in Montreal and I was able to hold the new note in my hands.  I noted that the numerals were more easily felt that those on the others notes and the guy told me that the process used to print this part is different that the itaglio.  Apparently, the itaglio process cannot put as much relief on paper, but I don't know what is the process used. Have you looked to your note under a UV light?  The new fluorescent ink is much more visible that one used on 5s and 10s (Almost psychedelic)...

I'm eager to get one...

Hi, I am new here...

I have a question about the new 100.00 note:
On the back there is a poem in English which starts by " Do we ever remember that ..." but then it's translated in French "Nous souvient-il parfois..." . For those that speak french is that proper french? Isn't supposed to be Nous souvenons-nous parfois... is it an error??? I work at the bank and  I had a few people complain about it today...

Nous souvenons-nous parfois..  sounds more correct to me.  The BoC will very likely have to re-issue the note.

RADAR NOTE found in Waterloo, Ontario, N2L 3G1, today!

This marks the FIRST Journey $100 Radar note discovered (at least as far as this forum is concerned) and it at least partially disproves the theory that radar notes are being yanked from bricks.

A scan will be coming later this evening after I get home.

Currently, the note is owned by Mike_L but it's in my possession for scanning.

Strange, I went to a HSBC bank branch today in Chinatown, they recieved a new brick of 100s, but the tellers are radar collectors, and they opened the brick to discover the radar missing, and a EJE note replacing it. I also got another new 100 with number EJA0429943. I frequent that HSBC branch, and the tellers know me well, they used to always give me the radars from theirs bricks of 5, 10, 20 bills.

LOL - no... You've just got to be friendly with your bank tellers... They had two bricks of 100 $100s, so they let us thumb through them for radars, inserts, etc.  We only ended up buying a couple notes.  You didn't think we bought the entire bricks, did you?  :o

Do you need to buy some flowers for the tellers so they would allow you to handle the cash?  Most of the banks I deal with the cash is kept in a central cage or is dispensed to the teller through an ATM-like cash dispenser.

And seeing Mike_L hop, skip and dance out of the bank on Friday after getting that radar note was probably well worth their time!  :o

I guess these branches will have the new $100's very soon!

Finally got mine today at the Bank of Montreal in downtown London.  Even though the London Free Press had an article saying they had been released in London on the 17th, couldn't find any banks that had them until today.

More inserts showed up in EJAs at couple of CIBC Bkg Centres in Vancouver, BC.

EJE Inserts, with high number EJE 4946150 were located in EJAs at 1.02 mil.  Others with a low number EJE 4953128 were located in EJAs at 1.03 mil in nearby location.  Insert notes & regular notes both have the same FP & BP numbers.

No EJB, or BJY & BJY inserts have been located from banks here yet.

kobe, that EJE 4953128 note was spotted on eBay... I can't recall exactly right now and because I'm so flippin tired at the moment, I'm too lazy to check the other forum and see if there's a link...

What was the HIGH end of that run of inserts?
