I have in my collection a Prefix J/A Narrow Panel Gordon-Towers $1 1937 note. The Charlton catalogue does not indicate a "High" serial number for the J/A Prefix so I'm submitting a scan for reference purposes. Condition is Original VG.

In early editions of the Charlton guide this was listed as being a fully printed prefix. Most of the notes I have seen have been pretty low numbers. I can't remember the numbers but it seems I can' remember seeing one that has a starting number of more than One. The 3rd Edition clearly states H/A-J/A 0000001-1000000 - 20,000,000 QP.
I have some mixed feelings about this note. The rarity of it seems to justify the high price, but who wants to spend that kind of money one a 1937 $ 1.
I have never actually owned one but would like too someday. Likely a copy like Ottawa just posted.
J/A 1004174 has been pictured in the 18th + 19th editions
$ 50 Osborne EF - 1750
$ 1 J/A Prefix AU - 1750

Just to clarify... the J/A note was not printed up to 10M and is a very hard prefix to find in any grade. Actually in the charlton 19th edition on p.235 J/A range: 0000001-Unknown. Qty Printed: Unknown
H/A range: 0000001-10000000 Qty Printed: 10,000,000
I believe the highest known J/A to-date is in the 1.5m range while H/A is somewhere in the mid-9M range with major incomplete gaps within that run with lots of unknown ranges. This is why i think we really need to get a registry going for both H/A and J/A Narrow Pannel notes.

A large hoard of 34 Narrow Panel Gordon-Towers notes showed up at the Jeffrey Hoare Auction No. 57 in Toronto in October 1997. Of these 34 notes only 3 were J/A's while the other 31 were H/A's. Amongst the 31 H/A's there were no fewer than 26 pieces in About Unc condition in two consecutive runs, i.e.,
H/A 4249161-4249170 (excluding 4249165 --- see Note below **)
H/A 4250802-4240818
The above AU notes were offered individually and sold for about $500 (plus 10% commission) each although a few pieces didn't sell. I attended the auction in person but I didn't have the foresight to buy any! However, $500 was a lot to pay at the time --- especially when so many of the same note were on offer.
( ** Note: H/A 4249165 sold for $875 in the earlier Jeffrey Hoare Auction No. 55 in February 1997 ).
The J/A notes were as follows:
J/A 1004174 (About Unc) -- $1,000
J/A 1004175 (About Unc) -- see Note below ***
J/A 1004176 (About Unc) -- $1,050
J/A 1004177 (About Unc) -- $1,200
( *** Note: J/A 1004175 sold for $1,100 in the earlier Jeffrey Hoare Auction No. 55 in February 1997).
Thus, a total of 35 H/A's and 4 J/A's showed up at Toronto auctions in 1997. Whether or not the J/A Prefix is actually 10 times scarcer than the H/A Prefix remains to be seen though ......
Toronto in 1997 !! --- Those were the days !!!!
