There is an interesting article in this month's Beaver Magazine (Aug Sept 2004) on the Home Bank of Canada.  The title is "The Bank That Went Bust", and sheds light on a time that the federal government had a very hands-off attitude towards bankers.  The Beaver Magazine is the official magazine of Canada's National History Society.  http://www.thebeaver.ca
