61   What's It Worth? / 1954 Devil's Face Replacement - Grade Value

I know there is value in this note. When the day comes to sell would it be beneficial to have this note professionally graded? And who would you recommend?

To get the value out would you recommend a private sale or auction?

Any thoughts on grade and value in the mean time?

Thanks

I have a feeling that banks in Atlantic Canada may have had the King Charles III coins, but they got a limited supply and they went like hot cakes.  Same may have occurred with the Viola Desmond $10 notes when they were first released a few years ago.

It seems like whenever a new face appears on our currency, people want them and many refuse to spend them (they'd likely hoard them) until the coins or banknotes with the former face are significantly gone.  I still see some MacDonald $10 notes to this day, but I have been seeing an increase in Desmond $10s in St. John's since last summer.  Since August, every time I withdrew $10 notes from Scotiabank ATMs I normally go to, I got MacDonald $10s only one time, and after that it was all Desmonds to this day (including recycled ones with different prefixes).  I suspect people will likely do the same when the new $5 note gets issued - if Laurier's portrait gets replaced by a new portrait.

Also, if memory serves correctly, I don't think I remember coming across any newly-minted coins in Newfoundland in recent years (the pandemic likely had nothing to do with it) except for commemorative issues of quarters and toonies - all of which had the Queen on it.  Maybe banks in Newfoundland suspended ordering newly-minted coins (except for commemorative versions) due to having enough in circulation to last a while, perhaps?

Regarding the commemorative coins, I remember getting one of those black toonies in change from a supermarket, and I felt suspicious about it and turned it down in favor of a(n) (almost-)normal toonie as a result - without realizing it was real, and a special edition toonie released in honour of the departed Queen Elizabeth II.

I cannot recall that actually happening for me (like your situation) but I can say that the more circulated the bundle, the more unpleasant (& smelly), so probably.  The smell factor has really improved since polymer.  However, even polymer circulated enough will smell unpleasant.

Perhaps the odour of circulated cash is another reason a lot of collectors seek notes that are UNC (for collecting purposes)?

I recorded this episode from the tv show “How Do They Do It?”  The show is from 2012 and is pretty cool about the paper making process of US paper currency, as well as the inking and production process.  I recorded it on my iPhone.  So, my apologies for some issues.

March 18th find:

I picked up a worn birds $20 today because it had a legible partial bank teller stamp on it.

It reads:

04362-003

A quick search reveals that this transit number belongs to

The Royal Bank of Canada
602 Queen St.
Sault Ste Marie, Ont.
P6A 2A4

Pretty neat, eh!

Enjoy!

March 18th finds:  2 banks, 2 scores!

I went to 2 different banks today and both of them had paper money for me.

The first bank had 48 birds $2s, a birds $20 and some 1954 series notes.  It’s nice to receive crispy birds $2s!

The second bank had two 1975 $100s for me.

Enjoy!

Hi,
You know how I'm creazy about large ''B'' in 2$ 1986.I will share with you my last discovery.

The first one is I finaly found a radar with one large ''B'' on the left side in BGR prefix 3376733 and I also have the next radar 3377733 but no large ''B' on this one.

The second is on replacement BBX.For now I found BBX 0907097 with two small ''B'' and the one I have more near for now it's BBX 0784365 with two large ''B''.I think before 0900000 they are all large ''B'' and after turn to small ''B''like the BBP prefix, they start with all two large ''B'' and somewhere over 3million turn to two small ''B''.And what was my surprise when I found a BBX 3476975 with one large ''B on the left and small ''B'' on the right.

The last for now it's a prefix I never imagine it could be have this kind of variety it's on a BUJ prefix with large ''B'' on the left  and small on the right
You don't imagine how many 2$ I saw until for now, many thousand only this week end it's 1000 x2$ 1986.
If you have 2$ 1986 with prefix who start with BG..A to Z and with and without large ''B''I really apreciate if you let me information it's for my registery.More information I have better it's for me to maybe imagine where the range is?
Thank you.

I went to my regular branch on Friday afternoon and was able to intercept the mutilated notes before they got sent out.  Unfortunately, the psycho bank manager again hand-crushed what would otherwise have been UNC notes.  This has been happening for a long time and I always knew there would come a day when he 'crushed' something really valuable and that day has come.  See photo of $50 T-C EHX (below 1.7m) issue 800K.  I am a deeply "disappointed" customer.  :'(

I got the EHX and an EHT both UNC and crushed, and a couple of multi colour $50s EHH and EHM, both EF and crushed.  An EF $2 CBB repeater, a nice UNC ATV $10, an AU $20, and a couple of $5s HOK pre-security) and HPL.

After I picked up the notes I met some friends at a restaurant and the entire time, the obnoxious odour of Patchouli was 'wafting' from my purse to the point that people were mentioning it.  When I got home, I removed all the notes from my purse and within minutes the entire room was overwhelmed with unbelievably strong Patchouli to the point I was coughing and had to put the notes, my purse, and my note carrier, all in plastic bags and seal them up.

In my opinion, if these notes had this incredibly strong smell on them while they sat in drawers, or a safe at the bank, anyone near-by would have been over-whelmed/affected by it, and given the fact that this branch has a 'resident psycho manager' who can't 'crush' ALL the notes, and likely thinks making them smelly is an alternate way of making them undesirable for collecting, it is my opinion this 'scent' got onto the notes while they were in the bank, shortly before they were given to me.

Can ANY bank note hunters please chime in -- have you EVER gotten a single, or multiple notes from a bank that had an over-whelming smell on them?

Thank you in advance,
Breanna

That's interesting Claude. Thanks for your input.  It reminded me of another problem I had with our shows in the GTA.

Only Don Olmstead had Scenes of Canada, Birds & Journey notes for sale. A few other had a few Scenes of Canada but rarely any Birds or Journey series notes (esp the missing prefixes that we were all interested in).  Me (& my buddies) who went to these shows kept asking the other dealers (the few who dealt banknotes) to add more of the recent series & they all looked at us like we were morons.

Finally, I asked Don "why do the other dealers ignore the more recent series?"
He told me, "they cater to US collectors who are only interested in the Sweetheart series."
"The Sweetheart series?" I asked.
"Yeah, the first three Bank of Canada series: 1935, 37 & 54". (He elaborated that they were interested in the Modified but far more interested in the Devil Face series too).
He then told me that the book values (we saw in Charlton) were more driven by US collectors (World demand) rather than a few Canadian collectors. It all made sense but was infuriating at the time.
