Title: Pointed vs blunt numbers 1979 series
Post by: Hudson A B on April 13, 2006, 11:12:57 am
Hi all, I went through a large number of 1979 notes over the while, and I found one like this: look at the 6 and the 9.  Instead of rounded tips, they are parallell with the cut of the note (pointed).  All the other ones had rounded tips on the 6s and 9s.

Any thoughts?

For those of us who have all our 1979 notes in our safety deposit boxes, do you have a few others that you can scan, preferably a little clearer and larger please?

I seem to have missed this post yesterday, otherwise I might have responded earlier.

Here's a scan from one of my 1979 fives, showing the 9 to have a rounded tip.  Hudson's scan may be a little fuzzy but it certainly shows sharper points on the 6 and 9 than mine.

I'm thinking perhaps that CBN might have had very slightly different numbers than BABN... but I have nothing to support this. More scans are of course necessary to see if we can find a pattern.

Maybe a few numbering machines had sharp points, and the rest blunt... who knows?

Thats exactly the difference I am talking about - thanks for the scans of other notes... the roundedness is what is different on mine.  It really stood out.  Hmmm....

Look also at the 4s in the two scans.  Yours shows a flat-topped four, and mine seems to be rounded.

Well actually if you look closely, every single number on Hudsons note is sharp or pointed, and every number in Seths is rounded.

Maybe this is some kind of variety?
Anyway, I got a PM from another member:
"
Don Roebuck seems to have established that wear on the numbering machines can result in the little differences, so maybe they don't mean much.  Whether that applies to your $20 I don't know, but have a suspicion it could. "

Could be, could be, but... It seems way too precise (the differences). Perhaps this was done before the Bird Series and got new style numbers. Did they have to replace tumblers ever?   Hmmm... I just want to make sure I didn't spend it yet.

Maybe they put in new tumblers and in doing do, replaced some of the numbers...?

after looking over my 1979's, I came to this:

out of about 20 notes ($5 + $20), only three had pointed numerals.

All 3 were $20
all 3 were T-C
all 3 were CBN

Mine is a Theissen Crow $20 also.
Are there $20 Theissen Crow's with rounded numbers at all?

Interesting.... I wonder if there is a known changeover point(s)?
