Title: Significance of 11 o'clock on $50 note
Post by: coinsplus on November 17, 2004, 04:42:40 pm
I am looking at the new $50 note and they have the Peace Tower with a time of 11 o'clock.  Since I also collect coins, the 1939 Parliament Hill Silver Dollar also has the Peace Tower time of 11 o'clock (when you use a magnifying glass).

Is there a significance of 11 o'clock?  Or is it just a coincidence?
;D

There is a significance:

Quote
The Peace Tower is the most prominent part of the buildings. It replaced the 55-metre Victoria Tower, burned in the 1916 fire; the current tower is 92.2 metres tall. The base of the Peace Tower contains Books of Remembrance listing all of Canada's war dead; a page is ceremoniously turned in each book every day at 11 o'clock. The tower contains an observation gallery offering beautiful views of the city.

Direct quote from the official media kit distributed by the Bank of Canada:

"The time on the clock face of the Peace Tower depicted on the new $50 note is 11 a.m., signifying the armistice of World War One: the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month 1918."

Instead of the note referring the page turning, perhaps BOTH the note and the page turning refer to the armistice?
