I have been getting an increasing amont of bills that have marks on the front of the note. Does anyone have any idea what causes it? I have included a pic and have outlined the marks in red to show you where they appear since they can not be seen in a scan.
They look like someone used a pen to draw a straight line and a dot, but no ink came out.

I've been noticing the same though I am not sure what specifically causes it.

Well find out! It's driving me nuts!!!! :)

haha, I'll get right on that!

It is obvious that those marks where made by someone using the note under some other document when they were crossing their "T"'s and dotting their "I"'s
8) So I guess a "tool" did make the mark!
Also could be morse code dot dash stands for the letter "A" ;D

Might be from the clamping and banding the notes or during cutting.

True, but if it's dash dot then it's the letter "N".
However if you consider the dot and dash separately, dot is the letter "E" and dash is the letter "T". Ooooh, spooky stuff! Could it be a message for E.T. to phone home? ;D

Conclusion: It is a NEAT note that is worth mega bucks 8)

In that case, the buyer will have to ANTE up if only4teeth puts it up for sale! ;)
BTW, only4teeth, is your forum name descriptive of the quantity of teeth you have left, or does it mean "only for teeth" to suggest that you are a dentist? :-X

I'm afraid to ask why...if you will need ready cash to buy some dentures it appears that friedsquid will readily buy this error note off you! :D

GREAT..... I kinda like that whole "gold look" anyways! lol

I agree it could be a clamp used to hold down the brick for banding/wrapping. Did those who find this usually find or observe this mark on the bottom notes from xxxx990 to xxxx999 region?
Dei Gratia,

I tend to agree with the theory of mark left by the banding machine. I noticed that this mark looked as a square hard block were hardly pressed on the lasts notes of each bundle of bricks of AOV notes. The most marked note was the ***999 and the mark was weaker as you went down the numbers, to disappear around ****995.
This mark spoiled few replacement I got >:(

You are definitely correct. After having gone through a number of my records I see that the notes in 999 spot do contain such a mark and as you get to the 4th or 5th note down the mark disappears.
So now, how is this described when grading the note? ???

Maybe UNC with "mechanical damage by the printer"? ;) ;)
-
I found some of these marks on other notes through out an intact virgin brick. Another possibiliy judging from the position it could be a mechanical handling problem when the watermark was registered on the paper prior to printing.

If it was a defect linked to the watermark making, each note would have this mark, not only the fews last notes of each bundle (which are on the top of each bundle), so I still think that the mark is made by the wrapping/banding machine. But it's possible that the mark is made when the ream is cut in strips and bundles.
Speaking about cutting notes, I observed that on every bundle, the infamous "cutting cup" on the security strip is most noticeable on the top notes (for a face-up bundle) and becomes weaker as you go down the bundle. The cutting mark is absent on the last 20-30 notes (where the three last digits are *****30-00). Have someone who had noticed this phenomenon?
Because of this, I tend to believe that the reams a now cut by stacks of 100 sheets, instead of a full 1000 notes ream at once, maybe because the cut is easier and cleaner through 100 notes instead 1000. Any comments?
