Title: Number of notes in circulation by denomination
Post by: AZ on January 09, 2012, 10:51:53 am
Does anyone know how many $5 and $10 notes are in circulation?

The numbers for $20-$100 are (from newspaper reports):

$20: 600 million
$50: 170 million
$100: 260 million

The most recent numbers available are as of December 31st 2010; they appear on page 118 of the February 2011 Banking and Financial Statistics report (http://epe.lac-bac.gc.ca/100/201/301/bank_can_banking_fin_stats-ef/2011/2011-02.pdf).

Bear in mind that the numbers on that page indicate the dollar value of the outstanding notes in thousands of dollars, not the actual number of notes. So you'll have to do some multiplying and dividing to get the the numbers you want. Also bear in mind that the numbers refer to the total value of notes outstanding from the Bank's books; the number of notes in active circulation is much less (notice the ~250 million $1 and $2 notes still outstanding, for example.)

Thanks Seth and Brent! I should have thought about the liabilities tables.
