Title: Smell of the new 5$
Post by: copperpete on November 18, 2006, 04:45:44 pm
Can someone  tell me if he noticed the odour of the new 5's?  I find that their odor is very different of the "old" ones.  Is it because the BABN use different inks, or it's the smell of the so-called "varnish" possibly used to give a more shiny look?

Also, the paper used is heavier (not necessarly thicker) than before.  An entire bundle weights around 120 grams (about 1,14 to 1,21 gram per note), instead of 105 grams (about 0,99 to 1,07 gram per note) for the  previous "heavy" paper used by CBN (except for the "thin" paper used for the infamous "test" notes, which were not so much less heavy).

Smell, I would attribute it to the varnish. It is like the HOU that I found. Kind of chemical smelling.

Perhaps it adds to the wieght?
