Title: Card Money
Post by: pdbman on July 30, 2011, 10:38:56 am
Is anybody an expert on card money? I have 6 cards. 2 face cards. They all have french writing on the back. It doesn't appear that they have any mention of value on the cards. One of the cards has the year 1700 on it. This may not have been money but some form of communication. I would be happy to share pictures with anybody with an opinion. I am going to be selling 50+ bills mostly UNC, I will discuss some of them in this forum until I have reached the 15 item post requirement. Them I will list them inthe trading area for sale.

This kind of money was used in Quebec from 1685-1719. In the charlton Catalogue on the 1st page they show one such example face card dated 1714 Vaudreuil Region. There is no mention as to how much these are worth but i do believe they are quite rare.   The example shown in the catalogue is 50 livres.

I will bet they came out of Quebec?  These have different writing about everything and they probably were never issued as playing card money.

I need help. I use the Simple Image shack browse window below the message window. I open pictures and hit the post button. Where do the pictures go? How do I attach them to my post?

After you post the file you have to copy the html code generated by the system into the message window.

Wouldn't all card money in Canada be from Quebec?

These were all sold by tokensgirl from Quebec on eBay and are not card money.  They may all be examples of what a card of that time might be like but that is it.  I bought a couple myself.

You are correct on 5 of the cards as being purchased from Tokensgirl. The 6th card was not. it was purchased from an early american history auction. It is the one with the year 1700 written on it. It is very different than the other ones. It may be something different.

I believe this one is issued from commune in France.  I actually tried to acquire some from Italy at one time.  A lot of people think that card money was limited to Canada but this is not the case.
