Title: BOC Governor James Coyne 1910-2012
Post by: Philippe_B on October 14, 2012, 12:54:04 am
James Elliott Coyne, a former Bank of Canada governor who battled over policy with prime minister John Diefenbaker, died Friday night in Winnipeg.

He was 102.

His son, journalist Andrew Coyne, confirmed the death on Saturday.

James Coyne was appointed the second head of the bank of Canada in 1955 and held the post until 1961.

He was forced to step down after refusing to adopt the Diefenbaker government's expansionist monetary policies.

The controversy — dubbed the Coyne Affair — has since been recognized as an important step on the road to making the bank more independent and transparent.

The Winnipeg-born Coyne graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1931 and later studied at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar.

He first joined the research department of the Bank of Canada in 1938.

Sad news...He lived to be 102 though...

I wonder how many former BoC governors/Deputy Governors are still with us?

Very sad.  I recall an interview a local newspaper had with him a couple years ago.  He was fully lucid and lived in his home.  He picked up the phone on the second ring.

Here is a piece in today's Post by John Crow:  http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2012/10/14/james-coyne-legacy/

Former top BoC officials still with us:  John Crow, Gordon Thiessen, Bernard Bonin, Malcolm Knight, David Dodge, Paul Jenkins.

The most recent passing of a BoC governor prior to Coyne was Gerald Bouey in 2004.
