I decided to start this thread to accommodate the casual coin collector. Most of us started collecting coins by picking a few from the bank or from pocket change. Since the discussion doesn't have to be limited to RARE coins, feel free to share your "picks".
I still think this is the most fun way to engage new collectors in the hobby, whether it be coins or paper money.
I've recently started roll searching pennies from my local bank. I've searched through $50 worth of cents so far and have found many older coins, some in surprisong condition.
Some highlights from this lot:
a nice 1952 R/B
several red cents from 1968-78
15 USA Wheat pennies, the oldest of which is 1921
a 2 Euro cent piece
a British 1 penny piece
a 1939...heavily circulated, but still a keeper
a 1931 in VG-F
a 1932 in VG/F
An entire roll of UNC 1967 pennies
several from he dates 1961-1966 with some original lustre
What I will miss the most when the penny is withdrawn is the chance to search for old coins in change. The other denominations have for the most part been culled of older dates. (When was the last time you got a nickel with edges or even a coin dated before 1980?)
Oh well, I guess time marches on...
What have you found?
-
Good thread.
Forget about pre 1980 coins. I have no luck finding the 2012 pre-security toonie and loonie.
I do find 1966-1970 quarters but have difficult time finding 1992 quarters.
C'est la vie

I'm in the same boat, can't find the $2 Coin... this is a scarce one.

I'm in the same boat, can't find the $2 Coin... this is a scarce one.
It is selling on e-bay at 3 to 4 times its face value. That's the best I have found. Same with the loonie.

When I was at the bank last week I just so happened to decided to search some rolls for fun.
10 rolls of cents, a few young queens, 53 the youngest and a 2euro cent from Italy.
10 rolls of nickels, two young queens and a 47.
10 rolls of dimes, 8 rolls were new, nothing of note.
10 rolls of quarters, all reclamation, didnt have the colour mens hockey i'm missing.
1 roll of Dollars, grey cup, didnt have that one.
1 roll of Toonies, a 400th Quebec I was surprised to since I believe they were only released around Quebec.
-
Back in 1993 to 1995, I used to go to the local bank branches (TD and RBC) all the time asking for boxes of pennies, sometimes $25 x 2 boxes worth. And getting some excercise lugging the weights back home.
My best-ever single coin find, with the biggest profit margin ever was finding a 1955 Canadian one-cent, No Shoulder Fold. The condition was VF. Not believing what I had, I took the penny to show Bill Merkley (London Coin Centre in London, Ontario) and he confirmed using a loop that I had the real deal. Back then, he actually offered me $80 for the 1 cent coin - which is like a 8000% return!!!! I still have the coin in my collection today, and it's steadily increased in value since then. :)
Other findings were lots of US Wheat pennies (oldest was a 1909 VDB), various Canadian pennies dated between 1937 to 1959, and a red, uncirculated, 1945 penny.
At that time, I also culled out all the US pennies since the exchange rate back then was something like $1.30 Canadian to $1 US... I had accumulated nearly $150 worth of US pennies worth and took it to Detroit to spend.

I'm in the same boat, can't find the $2 Coin... this is a scarce one.
Just as we talk about not finding - I did find one today. Maybe I should wish for not finding some other stuff. I could get lucky. :)

Not spending for sure. On the other hand from a time perspective it would be cheaper to pay 8 bucks and get it of ebay. Not the same thrill.
And today I got four rolls of loonies and got 1 old 2012. A bit beaten up for this year's coin but nonetheless a 2012 oldie loonie. I saw 2012 on the reverse and I closed my eyes. Wow this is the first one I have handled
Since this thread started as what was found. I found a BU loonie from 1992. Not the one with the parliament and the family but the regular one with the date 1867-1992 printed on the reverse. I was thrilled with that more than the 2012 oldie. What are the odds?
Also was at Starbucks and in their tip jar they had all new 2012 pennies. I don't collect them but considering that they are going for a premium it looks like the banks are getting rid of their left over pennies.
What a world. Pennies lying in tip jar and othes charging almost a 10 times premium elsewhere.
-
I assume that you will not be spending it. :)
Just noticed that roll of old toonies sold for $167+taxes on e-bay. Almost 4 times face value. Crazy coin collectors. :)
-
I don't know why 2012 cents are going for a premium, they shouldn't be as there is no reason. Its the final production of the cent but so what? There are lots of 2012 cents out there. Even in MS-60-MS-63 they should not be worth more than a few cents... in my opinion.
As for the 2012 original design $1 and $2, it will be very interesting to know what the actual qty minted of these are. I expect possibly a number <1,000,000 for both.

Roll of $1-old 2012 on same ebay site sold for 140+.

The average price that these dollars are going for are around $8 in MS-63 grade and about $5 in MS-60 grade. So if its a roll of MS-63's, don't be surprised if you see an asking price of up to $200.
-
The coins being sold in rolls are mint-packed rolls. Would they be considered MS-65?

I believe so as long as they are not removed from their original packaging.

Love the 1 cent coins I actively search $25 bags of 1 cents all the time but I only seek 1 coin the ultra rare 2006 Magnetic with no P or no mint logo. These babies are worth looking for. Check them out on your favorite auction site and see what I mean. I average between $85 and $285 each when I find them depending on condition. Some guys ask $1500 or more. But I doubt they ever sell one for that. If your interested in searching for them and I know everyone of you are digging in your pockets now. The easiest way is to dump them out on a table and run a magnet over them the ones that stick set aside. The rest take back to the bank as they will most likely never be worth keeping or wasting your time looking through. The magnetic ones look at the obverse under the queen they will all have the new Winnipeg Mint logo or a small letter P these were the trial or test coins that are copper plated steel. The ones with no marks or letters are copper plated zinc. All but a few that is, the ultra rare 2006 no P no Mint logo but attracts to the magnet could be there. It's not sure how many were struck with this obverse but it is listed in trends as a variation not a mule. Good Luck Have fun.

In the most recent box of pennies I searched through I found:
Multiples of every date from the 1960's on
(a nice red 1963 and 1960 were in there)
At least one of each date from the 1950's except for 1955.
At least one of each date from the 1940's except for 1947 and 1948
(This surprised me...I didn't think I'd find many coins from the '40s)
a single 1938 penny
Radarjourney, would you like to help me out? :) I save anything before 1967.

I actively search $25 bags of 1 cents
What are these bags? Is there similar thing in coins like in notes rolls-bags----- Are bags gotten at the banks?
-
Today, I received a 1965 silver 10 cent piece in change from the Empire Cheese factory in Campbellford Ont. They're still out there!
:)
-

Not sure but its probably a bag that contains 50 rolls of pennies.
That's quite a lot of work going through all those pennies only to find that one key 2006 date. Even then, what is the probability that you will find one, probably the same chance of winning the jackpot on the 6/49. Keep in mind the RCM have minted a few billion 2006 pennies, of those billions only a few hundred were minted with 2006 CPS and 2006P CPZ.
-
Today's finds:
$10 worth of pennies:
4 x 1962
3X 1963
1X 1970 RED
1X 1947 USA
1X 1957
1X 1945
1x 1939
5X 1965 (not sure what variety yet)
2X 1964
1X 1920 ;D
I regret having just started roll searching...There are lots of cool coins to find and not enough time! LOL!
Happy hunting!

Dean, you can still buy boxes of pennies from the banks. For example, pick up 10 boxes x $25 each, and you'll have months of enjoyment searching and sorting the individual rolls of pennies, even after they are gone from circulation. ;)
-
I never really got into coins that much as a kid.. for some reason I was into nickles and for awhile collected those and had mostly a complete set with the exception of a '21 which frustrated me.
Seeing this board motivated me to go through a few change bins I had at home, and I managed to pick out a couple handfuls of pre '67 silver coin...
Now I'm wondering what are some key dates I should be looking for in terms of each denomination... I love going to the bank and getting a pile of notes looking for different serial numbers (I call it bill hunting) but this seems like it would be just as fun to go to the bank and get rolls of pennies. Any help or advice would definetely be appreciated.
-
Now I'm wondering what are some key dates I should be looking for in terms of each denomination...
Some of the recent key dates that come to mind that can be found in circulation are...
1¢ 1985 pointed 5, 2006 Magnetic, 2006P Magnetic and Non-Magnetic
5¢ 2000P
10¢ None really unless they are dated before 1968.
25¢ 1991, 2001 no P, 2009 Men's hockey painted Raised 2 (looks like the non-painted version)
1$ 2012 original design
2$ 2012 original design

Now I'm wondering what are some key dates I should be looking for in terms of each denomination.
I'd like to add:
Pennies:
1965 pointed 5, large beads
1955 no shoulder fold
1953 shoulder fold
Dimes:
1969 large date
nickels:
1964 extra water lines
Quarters:
1973 large bust
1991 caribou
Fifty Cents:
any date you can find...They're a bit of an oddball now so they're fun to scoop up for face value!
Nickel dollars:
Same as fifty cent pieces
By the way, today's finds include:
1957 red with a little brown
1959 x2
1956 x2
1946
1920 USA
1933 USA
1967 x3
1963 x3
1964 x3
1970 red
1953 (I think I can see a shoulder fold...can anyone tell me how to locate it?)
3X 1965 (I need some help to tell the pointed 5 from the blunt 5...I can see large beads vs. small beads easily)

Man you should buy lottery. I had no such luck with pennies.
The most interesting find I had was a regular quarter in a roll of loonie. I was cheated of 75 cents. I guess thats the game you play.
Regarding the shoulder fold. The Charlton publication has described it well. If you look at the "I" in DEI. The NSF variety has a bit of a serif (they call it flare) and the SF variety does not. Also the axis of the I in DEI points between two large denticles in NSF and points between the denticles in the SF variety. It is on page 62 in the latest edition of Canadian Coins Volume 1.

There is a variety with different types of grass for the Terry Fox loonie and there is 2010 toonie with lesser amount of serrations than normal.

Thanks Rupiah for the advice on locating the shoulder fold.
I live in Toronto so I'd imagine that because of the volume of coins circulating through the banks, there is bound to be an abundance of older coin.
I went into my local bank and asked if they had anything special. They said that this "old guy" (Why is it always old guys? :) ) came in and cashed in a whole lot of stuff the day before. I offered to buy it all, that way it saves the tellers the trouble of picking through it.
This is what they gave me:
15 rolls of hand wrapped pennies which included 5 rolls of coins from 1970-1977, most of which were RED.
2 rolls of 1973 RCMP quarters (no large bust though) >:(
1 roll each of 1976, 77, and 2 rolls of 79 quarters (I suppose they're ok to keep if only for their metal content)
Today's finds from the penny rolls include:
1 x 1919 USA
35 x 1969
27 x 1968
12 x 1967
4 x 1966
5 x 1965
12 x 1964
9 x 1963
7 x 1962
4 x 1961
2 x 1960
7 x 1959
2 x 1958
6 x 1957
2 x 1956
1 x 1955
1x 1954
3 x 1953
1 x 1952
3 x 1951
2 x 1950
1 x 1947 ML (ptd 7)
1 x 1946
1 x 1945
2 x 1942
They told me that they shipped the mutilated stuff out the day before and that had the rest of the guy's hoard in it. The teller said that there were 2 rolls of 50 cent pieces, pre 1986 dollars, and a bunch of old notes with the queen on them that "looked like Canadian Tire money." (I can only assume they are 1954)
She said that she didn't think to keep the 50 cent or dollar coins because "nobody uses them or asks for them".
I left my contact information with them after educating them on these items and they now know to keep everything for me. How nice! The only thing they would not bend the rules on were the $1000 bills :(
Tips on getting old coin/paper money from banks:
1. Be friendly: Go in when they're not busy. Don't ask them to do too much. The teller told me that there is another collector in the same mall who wants them to pick through and save specific items...They don't have time for that!
2. When you see hand rolled coin in plain paper, it's most likely someone rolling up their change jar, a favourite hiding place for old coins!
3. Offer to buy everything in one shot if you can afford it. This saves the tellers time and aggro.
4. Just ask! Most people don't collect. Tellers won't know what you want unless you ask for it!
5. Patronize the same branch. The tellers will get to know you after a few visits.
6. find out when they ship out their mutilated currency, then get in there before that day!
Happy hunting!

Great tips. Thanks for offering that up. I have also bought donuts for the staff on occasion to express my gratitude. They seem to appreciate that and have called me when old bills showed up.

Good suggestions.
Why would they not give the 1000. In any case I read some threads which seem to suggest that 1000 bird was not that much of value.
-
Why would they not give the 1000.
Probably because its still used in criminal transactions.
-
Woo Hoo, After posting above I decided to look through a few more rolls and found my first
2006 magnetic with no mark. :)
-

It's a good thing I have a couple of them set aside... ^-^
Even if the banks aren't giving them out, one can easily be obtained at a local coin show for a small premium in Gem UNC. At the Toronto Coin Expo, I saw lots of thousand dollar notes and there didn't seem to be a line up to purchase them. I'm sure a dealer would accept a reasonable offer.

Just out of curiosity, how many rolls of pennies did you search through before you found it?
Just to let you know, you are very lucky. Since 2006 i've looked at over hundreds of 2006 pennies, never have i found one with the P and obviously never seen any of the steel No mint mark. :(
-
I haven't kept exact tabs but I have 7 boxes here + maybe 4 I've returned + $30 bucket + the 10 rolls I just got, and maybe 2 x 10 rolls again.
So $320 + $30 I'm probably missing.
I guess I've gone though 35,000 cents :o in close to a year.

Wow.. that's a lot of pennies. Well i guess after searching through 35,000 of them, you deserve a lucky break! 8)
Any other good finds??? 1955 No Shoulder Fold, 1985 pointed 5?
-
Out of $10 in pennies today:
2 x 1962
4 x 1963
3 x 1964
3 x 1965
1 x 1966
1 x 1967
3 x 1968
3 x 1969
1 x 1941
1 x 1953D USA
1 x Barbados 2010
Nothing special from these rolls...They were machine rolled. Maybe I'll stick to hand rolled coins if I can manage to get them from the bank. Last batch was MUCH better.

I'm really not much of a coin guy at all.. but I love reading about the updates day to day of what you guys have found....
I have no idea what kind of value these pennies have but I certainly think it's really cool that you get excited enough to post it up here when you find 'em
Keep it up... it totally has "changed" the way i look at change.... :-D (ohh that was bad sorry)
-
it's really cool that you get excited enough to post it up here when you find 'em
I think that the uniqueness about collecting coins and paper money is the excitement it generates. I have some specific interests with respect to coins and banknotes and when I share that with other people they invariably comment on the excitement it generates. This is invaluable.
Surely if you can make money on the way that's great. I saw on e-bay that a $25 VF note sold for $5000 and a $500 note sold for $10000. Assuming the starting point of 1935 this represents a rate of return of about 7.5% annualized on the $25 and about 4% annualized on $500 notes respectively.
Compare that to an average return of around 9% annualized for S&P over a 25 year period.
Other than short term opportunistic motivation for making money and I think collectors have to see beyond the investment potential.
-
Can you please elaborate on the 1935 $500 that sold for $10,000?
-
Can you please elaborate on the 1935 $500 that sold for $10,000?
search listing number 180982413192 - In the main page it says it sold for 10,000 but on the bid page it says 6000. But using 10000 in my calculations provides a conservative estimate.

That's exactly what i expected they would be, because a regular issued 1935 $500 there's almost none around. I've ever yet to even see a real example at any Nuphilex show in montreal.
-
Rupiah...
I totally agree with you.... I believe that true collectors will collect what interests them based on their excitment for something.
That especially has to be true for most people that are getting into this hobby at this time. I believe that since 2008 most notes have actually lost some value.
Now why I stated that I had no idea as to the value of the pennies is because I am someone who really does get excited about the value in different objects. I personally am a big fan of fractional notes... one because you expect 0.25 to be represented by a coin instead of paper and also because of the notes are now bought and sold for.
I won't lie after reading some of the post I did go through some of my pennies, but from my days of playing rumolli I have well over $50 worth of pennies in cans some of which date back to the '40's ... My interest in the penny isn't that great, but I've kept the coins for when we play rummoli tournaments as a family.. this board just sparked my interest wondering if I may have in my possession something of very high value and not even known it.
-

I've always had a soft spot for odd things and for some reason, everything I like is or gets discontinued...
Pennies
50 cent coins
$500 notes
shinplasters
blue Pepsi... :)
Bee Hive corn syrup bottles :)
Anyway, It's nice to see the printer's proof in English. I own the French one. :) Bought it back in '06. Apparently there are only 4 of those French ones known.
When the 2002 jubilee 50 cent coins were released for circulation, I did my bit to circulate as many as I could at my job at Air Canada Centre. I must have given out $500 worth of them. To my dismay, three things happened:
1. Almost everyone kept it as a souvenir (Which could be a good thing)
2. When I gave them as change to kids, a couple of angry parents came back to me and demanded the "right" change...I told them to look at the coin and that it was worth 50 cents!
3. Some people came back later and tried to pass them off as toonies.
It's not surprising that the experiment failed. It's not a good idea to reintroduce an effectively dead coin to the public as a one-off experiment. I would have much preferred a commemorative $50 note for the Queen's Golden Jubilee instead of a coin rejected by the public...

So I guess if you held on to the 500 you would have made a much better return than the stock market.
If one were to make a pick which one of today's notes would be the equivalent of 500 from 1935 in another 78 years? :(

And that's the bonus.

Today's finds from $5 worth of pennies:
3 x 1964
3 x 1967
1 x 1966
1 x 1955
However, from $25 in loonies, I found a 1927 confederation medal! ???
Wow, I'd never think that one of those would make it into a loonie roll...Probably not worth much as every schoolkid was given one back in the day...

It's a copper piece, very thick, with a double bust of George V and Victoria. It says Confederation Canada 1867-1927.

It is probably this medal.

I have one of these 1867-1927 Medals, they are quite interesting, however they are quite common and only worth a few bucks.

Went to the bank today to pick up my order of 10 boxes of pennies only to be told that they cancelled it. Can they do that? >:( I did buy $40 worth...This was all they had in the drawer. Now I don't know how I'm going to continue with my penny hobby...

I think the next thing to go might be the nickel. :)
Maybe when inflation finally erodes what little purchasing power the nickel has, it too will be gone. What I'd really like to see happen is up front pricing where the tax is included. No more of this adding tax nonsense. What you see on the sticker is what you should pay. They do this in Japan and I had no problem with it...I knew exactly how much things would cost.

I fully support this idea. Even in the Eurozone it works like that. What you see is what you pay.

1 English Penny
1 USA 1944

It appears if this person who deposited these coins was a metal detectorist because some of the coins were FILTHY. They are so corroded that they are barely legible.
Keeps the hobby interesting eh?

I truly am inspired by your dedication to this hobby. :)
It could be dedication or maybe I need to get a life... :P
It's just that when I get into something, I go at it on all cylinders for awhile...With the penny, I'm under a deadline of sorts to obtain stock (although I may be able to get more from a sympathetic teller or two) :)
Thanks for the compliment...I've been obsessed with coins and paper money ever since I found my first $1 asterisk note in change at the Loblaws on Lakeshore and Leslie in 1985. As a 7 year old, I had a choice: Buy candy or keep the bill...I kept FA3517745. Still have it too...It was the note that started it all...It was tops in the Charlton guide for a year until a higher one was found. :(
I've been driving my friends and family crazy about collecting money for 27 years and I'm not slowing down now...I have them well trained to look for things!
I love this hobby...

Doesn't always work that way. I have had quarters as fillers in loonie rolls. Normally in standard wrapping you can make out if there are 25 coins in one roll by looking at the folds. But how the heck do you make out if it is filled with a few quarters unless you open it and see it.
So it works both ways. :)

Most recent finds from a box of $25 in pennies:

9 x 67
8 x 68
10 x 69
1 x 1924 USA
1 x 1946 USA
1 x 1950 USA
Other interesting finds:
1 2 Euro cent with an oak leaf (does anyone know where it's from?)
1 2010 penny with a strange gold toning...dunno what caused this but it looks neat.
Nothing really special from this box. I guess I was spoiled in the past. I now have full rolls of 1964, 67, 68 and 69 from searching.
The tellers I know said after Monday, customers will start bringing in rolled pennies and I suspect they will have more interesting finds as people empty out grandma's penny jar. I really hope to find more examples of George V pennies. I have found only 5 of them since I started looking through rolls...
Happy hunting!

I suppose you're right Rupiah...With pennies, the risk is about as low as you could expect. All in all, if I discounted all of the foreign coins I have found in the roll searches, including American pennies, I would be short 6-7 dollars.
When you're dealing with higher value coins, the discovery of slugs, other denominations or demonetized coins in the rolls really eats away at your budget.
That's why I like receiving customer wrapped rolls in plastic coin rolls! :)

The tellers I know said after Monday, customers will start bringing in rolled pennies a
At one bank branch they said that they will be accepting unrolled pennies in some sort of penny bags. They said these bags can hold $25 worth of pennies.
Interesting how it all ends.

I managed to score 2 boxes of pennies from my bank today plus another $10 worth in loose rolls.
Today my school was doing a penny drive for charity and I collected from my classes.
In about $12 worth from the students, I found:
1 x 1940
1 x 1943
2 x 1964
1 x 1967
1 x 1968
1 x 1969
1 x 1930 :)
1 x 1 pfennig from Germany 1972
1 x 2 pfennig from Germany 1995
This now brings my King George V finds from the wild up another notch...I'm also building a nice world copper collection on the side. What's next?

And to celebrate it all google is honoring the penny. Try google.ca. Better grab the penny fast because it is an error. It has 2013 on it.

5 x 69
1 x 74 RED
1 x 75 RED (This is a really nice coin IMO. The copper is still bright but has mellowed ever so slightly with age...I can't really describe it.)
This is an interesting time for coin roll hunting. There are treasures waiting to be found in each roll if you look hard enough. People will be disposing of their pennies and collectors can reap the rewards!
Moderators...Maybe it would be appropriate to split this thread into "Coin Roll Hunting" from the original heading since I've basically monopolized the thread with my obsession with pennies :)

Dean your posts piqued my interest... prior to Feb. 4th I managed to pick up 5 boxes...
I can say the whole searching through each roll is kinda fun. I certainly can say I'm not exactly getting the same luck as you.
I've picked out a few from the 60's and 70's perhaps a dozen from the 50's but only one from 1940.
I did find 2 wheat pennies which was kind of cool.
You mentioned the term "RED" ... you know of any website that could explain this feature well?
I've seen on some auction sites that talk about red, or toning.. but aside from "tarnish" or "petina" I really think this is something I'd like to learn more about but have no idea of how.
Thanks for getting me hooked... the whole time I'm doing this.... I've been thinking that I would like to do quarters next.

Where are you located? I live in Toronto and there's no shortage of banks with large volumes of used coins. I also ask store owners to exchange pennies with me. Most are happy to comply and I usually go right before closing time when they are cashing out so they don't have to reuse all those pennies!
I've picked out a few from the 60's and 70's perhaps a dozen from the 50's but only one from 1940.
It's just the law of averages...The more you search, the more you will find...I never found as many pre-1967 coins strictly in change, but when I started roll hunting, there they were! I have searched through 7 boxes since I've started and the old coins are quite plentiful. I'd say that on average, 5-10 % of all coins in the boxes were pre 1982 so far with the most common dates being 1975, 77, 78,79, 80, and 81.
I did find 2 wheat pennies which was kind of cool.
What were the dates of the wheat pennies?
You mentioned the term "RED" ... you know of any website that could explain this feature well?
RED refers to the degree of lustre on the coin.
I've seen on some auction sites that talk about red, or toning.. but aside from "tarnish" or "petina" I really think this is something I'd like to learn more about but have no idea of how.
The best thing to do is to experience mint lustre for yourself...Brand new coins from rolls can be said to be red. (Although, the steel plated ones are more pink then red when in mint state)
Thanks for getting me hooked... the whole time I'm doing this.... I've been thinking that I would like to do quarters next.
You're welcome :) Quarters can get expensive to hunt and there are few options aside from the most recent commemorative coins. The mint has reclaimed many of the solid nickel coins...The pickings are slim. I suggest you try hunting nickels. They are another neglected denomination. Many people throw those in jars too. Recently, most of the nickel nickels have disappeared too...
It's pretty sad to think that in very short order, most of our circulating coins will be no older than the year 2000. :(
Good luck and happy hunting!

Today, I rescued a few more pennies from the melting pot...While shopping, I managed to pick up the following coins from stores still giving them out:
2 x 1967
1 x 1992 (Don't see many of these...)
1 x 1944 :)
I think it will be fun in the coming months to try to score as many pennies from "the wild" as possible. As they are more actively withdrawn, this will become more challenging. Perhaps we could make it a challenge? :)

Dean:
The two wheat pennies I found were 1948 s & 1957 d
Both are in very good condition or better I would say... but I still have a lot of coin grading to go before my judgement can be relied upon... Perhaps if I have some spare time over the weekend I'll post up some pics..
Still going through the pennies I have, but when I finish my plan is to do what you did and start trying to exchange rolls with businesses ... Since I've never actually done this, I'm thinking convinence stores may be the best route... have you got any suggestions?
-
Hi Shylo,
You're not planning to get rid of your pennies are you? Look what you can do with them!
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2_68bJgBckk/ULPPCns8oII/AAAAAAAAAAk/p0GyP7ds4xA/s1600/PennyFloorFinal.jpg
Anyway, If you patronize a local store, ask them to set aside any pennies they may have. Larger big box stores will lessen your chances; "you'll have to ask the manager" these folks tend to say.
Mom and pop stores are the best for this sort of search. As always, be flexible, offer to buy all they have and buy something in the store if they are helpful to you. Make friends with the tellers at your bank. They will surely help you out...
-
Oh, I forgot...Go to the store/restaurant later in the day near closing time...They will be happy to exchange pennies so they don't have to cash them!
Go to a store and ask to exchange the pennies out of the tip jar (and add to it later if they let you look through the coins :) )
Also, try pizza joints. People often pay for a slice with chump change (At least in my neighbourhood they do) Often, the cashier will have a drawer full of pennies.
Forget Tim Hortons...They are already donating their pennies to charity. In fact, the manager at my local Timmies told me that they started rounding prices to the nearest nickel months ago and donating the odd cents to the Tim Hortons charity. Isn't rounding before February 4th called ripping people off??? >:(
Convenience stores have the take a penny tray. Ask to buy the pennies out of these. Most often they will not care!
Good luck!

Dang that's a fantastic business!!! Can't see it being too prosperous.. at my bank they have a change machine.. put all your coin in it.. and the machine gives you a slip of paper... you go to the teller and it's like making a deposit for 100% of the money .. no fee at all.

Ohh yeah.. and I found another wheat penny last night Dean.. 1945 s ...
I tell ya those are a neat find.. I also get kinda excited for anything pre-1970
After all said and done, my plan is to make up sets... I want to make up sets of pennies from as early as possible up until 2012.

The number of people using the change machine at loblaws and metro is incredible. I believe they also discount the cash. I think you might be right about the prosperity of the business but if you were to just hit one of those rare coins you possibly hit the jackpot :)

Looks like it to me.. Hey could u post two pics of two pennies one regular & one red... I would like to see the difference
-
Ok here goes...
The 1939 is red. It's considered mint state. Notice the amount of lustre.
{http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/704/011939f.jpg:http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/704/011939f.th.jpg}
The 1940 is circulated. It is dark brown.
{http://img607.imageshack.us/img607/9673/1940j.jpg:http://img607.imageshack.us/img607/9673/1940j.th.jpg}
As coins are exposed to the air, they will slowly tone from a bright orange/red to a brown (hence the description RED/BROWN)
{http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/6766/1929rb.gif:http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/6766/1929rb.th.gif}
The presence of oils from skin or other contaminants will speed up this process. If you look at recent coins, especially the plated ones, they appear more pink. See the 3rd picture.

"The Dean's Room"
heheh.... gotta thank you for starting this thread... I took a couple boxes of pennies before the 4th deadline and as you see I have sorted them by year... one year per container, then my hope is to make as many 1960 - present as possible. I know I will be able to make at least one 1938 - present selection... which I find kinda cool...
This has also motivated me to check out other coins. When I go the banks to swap bills I now often ask for any silver dollars and 50 cent pieces. Not for the silver content b/c most people only take the post '67 pieces in. But I find the 50 cent pieces to be facinating... we never really use them in common currency. Plus I've managed to score a couple '74's with the missing S which made me pretty happy.
Thanks Dean... this trip has been fun!

Very nice system you have there Shylo. Better than my ziploc bags! ;) I do put the nicer coins into the paper holders, but I need to buy some more...They're on my shopping list for TOREX.
Anyway, you can still obtain pennies if you know where to look and who to ask. Almost everyone wants to get rid of 'em so there should be a plentiful supply for some time for us pickers to scan for treasures...

Not much excitement today, no more pointed 5 1985 pennies yet...but I have MANY more rolls yet to explore.
On the topic of roll hunting, has anyone actually tried hunting nickel rolls? If so, what have you found? I don't imagine there would be much because of the RCM alloy recovery program...

I don't recall hearing about that variety...Is it a '74 penny? Do you have a picture that you can post?

Sorry to mislead ya... I was refering to 50 cent pieces and found a couple '74's with the missing S
-
What do you mean by 1974 missing S 50 Cent pieces... never heard of this variety before and there is no mention of this in charlton. Are 50 Cent pieces still available in banks because this denomination was discontinued back in 2002.

And yes, the 50 cent pieces are still circulating. A couple of bank branches contact me when they have 50 cent coins deposited by customers. Most recently, last week I was contacted by a lead teller, and they had exactly $373.50 of 50 cent coins available for me. Great fun, searching varieties. The years varied from 1968 to 1994 coins.
-
Coinsplus....A local bank here has lots of .50 pieces from those years as well. Is there anything interesting to look for? Or are these all worth .50? :)

Hi tmort,
The website coinsandcanada is an excellent resource for seeing various varieties and commonly known errors.
For the 50 cent coins here is the link. You can click on the specific year to find more details, and photos of known varieties, errors, etc. for example, if you click on 1994 (in the 50 cent section... And scroll down, you will see "more error and variety". Click on the link, "50 cents 1994, Dot in the G of D.G.", it will display a photo to look for.

Man, sometimes you hit a real dry spell. The last 2 boxes have yielded few good coins. I am not discouraged, but I have noticed that the machine wrapped rolls are mostly duds. The hand wrapped ones can sometimes have problems like greasy, dirty corroded coins but they are overall a better source for keepers.
Happy hunting!

Thank you coinsplus. Think I will go get some more bags of their .50 pieces are check into this link. Your help is appreciated!

!) Did I just start getting people into .50 pieces??!!?!??! AWESOME...
Super fun... today I found an add on KIJIJI that said he had 3 bags of silver dollars and .50 cent pieces... they were all post '67 so all the others that contacted him weren't interested...
Without hesitation I was over at his place picked 'em up for face and told him exactly why... he said his daughter works there and he'll call me when there's more in.... Gold star for me.. on being so polite.
I really am enjoying the .50 cent piece... I find that due to lack of circulation there really is a good chance you can find some that are in fantastic condition..
Like the pennies I'm actually trying to make a good set from at least '68 to 2002 ... very achieveable really..

Someone else mentioned that the hand wrapped coins have caused a problem with dirt and grime and such.
I have found the same things.... given that all these coins are pretty circulated I figured I would start a bit of my own research (which may be a touch controversial)
I want to make some good sets of '60 - 2012 pennies... that look really nice...the pennies are circulated and they never will be worth more than one penny IMO... so I am going to practice certain dips and whizzing techniques.
So far, for dips I have been looking at vinagar, lemon juice, and potassium cyanide.
My technique for whizzing right now is basically using a standard drafting eraser, inserting it in my corded drill and going to town on the penny.
I want to read more about the cyanide before I get my hands dirty with that of course... but so far I have done a bit of whizzing on some pretty ugly coins to see what can be done about the "brown"
I've gotten some really good results from whizzing with the exception that it's very difficult to get a lot of dirt removed from some of the edges of either the letters, date or profile... It's also best to build something of a frame for the penny on a block to help hold it...it save your hands a lot of cramping.
I think only time will tell but so far even under a 10x loop it's hard to see any direction lines or scratches that indicate the penny was whizzed.
Tomorrow / today is a provincial holiday... I'm hoping that I may get a chance to play around a lil as a coin doc and test out some dips... if anyone is interested in the results let me know...
I do wish to state that I'm only doing this for my personal collection of coins I really don't value nor do I see much value in them... and that I do believe you shouldn't dip or whizz coins to improve their re-sale value or grade if you're planning to sell them as it's unscrupulous and unethical.

Be very -no, not very, extremely-careful with cyanide...NEVER, NEVER, NEVER get it mixed with ANY acid...otherwise, you'll get a whiff of hydrogen cyanide which will kill you in a few breath...If you smell a odor of bitter almonds, it's a serious warning: get away! with any person with you. There's some methods to safely destroy cyanide, but these are quite difficult to use by someone not familiar with chemistry.
Otherwise, put gloves on your hands, let any food away (don't confuse it with salt...).
You absolutely want to have so shiny coins? A coin can be as nice with a brown patina...I'm not opposed to remove the grime and grease found on anSo old coin, but to have such contaminants, the coin had normally circulated a lot...so the grade is rarely higher than VF...

Thanks for the tips... I have access to a decent chem lab so if I do decide to work with cyanide it will be in a very controlled environment most likely using a vacuum chamber.

Geeze I missed reading of Dean's updates.... hope you haven't run out of pennies already bud!
In my .50 cent hunt I did manage to find 1 '84 small beads today... and I did a little celebration dance...

I'm still here, just very busy this week.
A rescue from the wild today: a 1965 small beads cent. Nothing special, but people are still giving out pennies in change. :)
I am currently staring at 12 unexplored boxes of pennies...Dunno if or when I'll be able to get more, but I'm enjoying this while it lasts...
Happy hunting!

FACE VALUE finds... are you kidding!!!
I found a wheat penny last night (love finding those lil guys!) it has to be worth at least 1.25 cents!!!
That's value baby!! (does another little dance :D)

Maybe when inflation finally erodes what little purchasing power the nickel has, it too will be gone.
We're already long past that point, IMO. Smallest coin should be a dime, and a toonie should be no bigger than a quarter. The coins are all much too big for the purchasing power they represent.
What I'd really like to see happen is up front pricing where the tax is included. No more of this adding tax nonsense.
Except for items with the price pre-printed on it (books, magazines, and the like), retailers are free to include any GST/HST in their prices if they so wish. If there was a competitive advantage to doing so, more retailers would do it. But there isn't, so most don't.

I managed to get 2 more boxes from the bank today. The first one looked promising because all of the coins are in plastic coin rollers, but after looking through $10 so far, I have found:
1 x 41
1 x 56
1 x 57
1 x 58
2 x 62
3 x 63
2 x 64
1 x 65
7 x 67
7 x 68
3 x 69
USA
1 x 1957D Scratched almost beyond recognition on the "Wheat" side.
I thought the finds would get better as people turned in their pennies, but it has not turned out that way...
Maybe it's all in my head...It IS a hunt after all, and sometimes the pickings are slim... :)
Happy hunting!

I'm happy because it brings back good memories of my childhood spent finding "treasures" at face value at the bank, the store or from relatives . Yes, the tellers used to let me look through change in their till and would keep stuff for me. This was back in the '80s when people seemed friendlier...

I've managed to pick a few out of rolls here and there but whole rolls nice!
Today's find for me.. 1974 dollar... double yoke #2
Coin is so nice I'm going to take it to the dealer for an unofficial grade... I'm hoping for AU ... (ohh who are we kidding I'd really love an MS-65) but in reality.... and AU will very much make my day.

Nice pictures. What camera/lens/settings do you use for these close-ups?
I recently found some die chips on new loonies and would like to photograph them.

I used a Nikon coolpics point and shoot. Under a lamp, using 400ISO and macro with no flash. It's tricky to get the camera to focus so it took several tries.
Here are the finds from the second box from yesterday.

Got a 2012 old style toonie today
Cool. I haven't found either of the old style loonies or toonies yet...
-
Nice find Rupiah! I haven't found one yet.
-
I think I was lucky early last year, and didn't realize it at the time. I had gotten a (old style) 2012 loonie and saved it because it was the first 2012 coin I had seen. At the time, I had no idea the new design was in the works.
I don't think I've ever seen a 2012 old style loonie since then.

Has you tried one of those steam cleaners with a nozzle to clean coins?
Less aggressive than an eraser in a drill!!
In the commercials, the dirt and crud seems to "melt" off of whatever they are demonstrating it on!
I'd like to know how it works if you try it b4 I do.
-
Personally, I would always advise against any type of coin cleaning. A cleaned coin will have lost most, if not all, of any numismatic premium value. I know from my days when I used to be an avid coin collector, that almost without exception, collectors will avoid cleaned, whizzed, dipped, any sort of cleaned or treated coin. To me, it's roughly the numismatic equivalent of a pressed note.
However, of course, if a collection is simply for the beauty of it, as opposed to accumulating numismatic value, clean away!
-
Thanks for the response TB.
As a recent collector of paper money spurred by a recent inheritance of coinage, why?
When a coin is covered in dirt, grease, grime and Dios knows what else, is it considered more valuable.
While a paper money note is more valuable the less polluted it is?
-
If a coin happens to be really exceptionally dirty for whatever reason, it would not likely be of much interest to collectors unless it happened to be a particularly rare coin. Any method of cleaning a coin that I have ever heard of leaves traces of the process behind, resulting in an impaired coin. For example, there may be hairline scratches, visible only under magnification, pitting, or residual chemical damage.
Particularly in the higher grades, original mint lustre is a very positive attribute, but cleaning will eradicate any trace of it. Additionally, especially on raw silver coins, natural toning may occur, to which many collectors attach a premium value. This toning can be spectacular, ranging from blues to yellows, etc. Sadly, I have heard of novice coin collectors that cleaned beautifully toned coins to "improve" their appearance, and by doing so virtually destroyed the value of the coin.
-
Sadly, I have heard of novice coin collectors that cleaned beautifully toned coins to "improve" their appearance, and by doing so virtually destroyed the value of the coin.
So here is real life situation. I bought a coloured silver maple leaf from a very reputable dealer. The coin gets mailed to me and upon receiving I notice that it has toning on the obverse. I would have accepted the toning except it was highly uneven and I did not consider it to be visually appealing.
To the dealers credit they engaged in a good customer satisfaction approach when I called them about it. Right off they told me that they would have replaced the coin but they did not have another piece (and I trust them for saying this)
Next they tried to tell me the good points about toning. So I turned around and told them if that was worth more how about they buy it from me for 15% more than I paid to them. Of course they would have nothing of it.
The next thing the dealer suggested which surprised the hell out of me was that I could bring in the coin (since I was driving distance from them) and they would remove the toning. They said that they routinely did that without much of a problem.
They even suggested that I could do it myself with an off the shelf product from superstore if I wanted to save the trip.
Wow - I could not believe what I heard. I did want to bring the coin in and see how the dealer was going to clean it given that there was colour on one side. So were they going to clean by dipping or by other means? In the worst case I was going to hang on to the coin because I wanted it for my collection and I had paid a reasonable price.
In the end I just ended up not going and keeping the coin. I can say that the dealer is a member of CAND and is very reputable and well known. I still shop with the dealer because they try to sort out customer issues the best they can.
But I am not sure where that leaves cleaning?
-
My aversion to cleaning coins is mainly in regard to coins with numismatic value, coins with values in excess of face value. I believe that maple leafs are essentially considered to be bullion, and are typically priced accordingly. Of course, there are some exceptions with certain low-mintage bullion coins that have attained a numismatic premium. Although I would not do it, I suppose that cleaning "bullion' type coins should not be a problem if one so desires.
Yes, I agree, sometimes toning is not attractive, and it can even detract from value. But it can also be spectacularly beautiful and substantially increase value.
I just hate to see any original coin being impaired by cleaning. As a matter of personal preference, of two coins that are otherwise equal, I'd take a poorly toned specimen over a shiny, dipped one, because I think a dipped coin gets an unnatural appearance.
-
Let me first start off by saying that I don't condone cleaning of any coins with numismatic value....
The coins I intend on cleaning are simply circulated pennies... nothing special about them at all...
So far my best results for a total clean is a 2.5-4 seconds in a vinegar solution mixed with a tsp of salt.....
Immediately after the dip I put a paste on it made of sodium bicarbonate... rubbing in the past with my fingers ... it neutralizes the acid and cleans off the dirt...
I've looked into some other chemicals for copper.... and will try a few... I may try the steam cleaner this weekend and post the results for interests sake...
this is just a little science project for me really...
-
I ought to make an admission here, although it makes me cringe in hindsight.
When I was a young lad, an uncle gave me a couple of those old dark blue Whitman coin folders. After awhile I'd filled in most of the holes and noticed that the coins were all in different stages of "shiny-ness". So..........I took all my coins into the kitchen, got out the abrasive comet cleanser and vigorously scrubbed each and every coin! They then all looked nice and shiny. :(
Only later on, when I became a serious collector in my teens, did I realize the damage I had done.

From Toonie roll today
2010 - 14 serration variety
2012 - old variety
It seems I have run into a few 2012 old variety lately.
When I first looked at the edge of coins in the roll I saw this one with lesser serrations and thought it was a 2012 without edge lettering but it turns out to be 2010 with 14 serrations. Exciting but 2012 without edge lettering would have been even more exciting.
-
I picked up $78.50 in pennies and $140 in hand rolled 1973 quarters from the bank yesterday. (I wonder if there's a large bust in the lot somewhere... :) )
In the $3.50 in loose pennies there were:
1 x 56
1 x 62
1 x 63
1 x 64
1 x 66
USA
1 x 1945
I dunno when I'll have time to sort out the rest...I have 20 boxes to search now and they keep coming...
Oh well, I can always take back what I don't keep...eventually...

I believe all 2011 and 2012 $2 were minted like the 2010 with 14 serrations.
Hi JB-2007,
I was a bit confused about that. However if you check there is an anomaly with some 2010 toonies. The normal are with 16 serrations and the other ones are with 14 serrations.
To the best of my knowledge there has been no report of 2011 or the old style 2012 with 14 serrations they are all 16 serrations.
The 2012 security ones (new ones) are 14 serrations. Some research indicates that the mint was proposing 14 serrations on the new security toonies with regard to their plan to have edge lettering. There was some speculation that during the production of some of the 2010 toonies the mint may have tried to experiment with 14 serrations and therefore that variation.
The 2010 toonie varieties are listed in the Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins. The 16 serration is listed as $10 and the 14 serration is listed as $20 in the MS-64 grade.
Would love to hear of any other information.

Had just enough time to pick through $10 worth of pennies today. Here's what I found:
1 x 57
1 x 62
3 x 63 (1 trace red)
2 x 64
3 x 67 (1 red/brown)
1 x 68
1 x 69
USA
1 x 1924
Anyone else out there doing roll hunting? I like to hear what others have been finding.

I haven't had much time myself.. although after this weekend that should all change for the better...
I'd like to finish off the pennies and then move onto some other denomination.... either nickles or quarters....
-
Based on advice from someone here I joined the coin community forum for error coins. Some of you guys who have not been there might want to see some of the error coins including pennies that people are showing on that forum. It seems there are some great examples from the pre-1970 times.
Totally amazing.
-
I'd like to finish off the pennies and then move onto some other denomination.... either nickles or quarters....
I would try nickels first. It's $250 up front but you can still find some interesting coins. The dimes and quarters are almost all steel plated ones now. One strategy is to go to your friendly neighbourhood bank and ask for customer wrapped rolls. That way, you can be sure that the coins are circulated.
That's how I got $140 worth of 1973 quarters last week. The teller just told me that she had some "old" quarters come in and I could buy them before she had to ship them out...
Good luck,
Dean

I was just passing through Haliburton today and had some time to kill so I went to the bank to pick up some rolls of quarters to search through
The teller asked if I was looking for anything special which actually surprised me since most of the time they could care less.
Anyways, I mentioned that I collected banknotes and coins and just searched through rolls to find anything neat. When she returned from the vault she came out with a box of quarters and started pulling them out.
She said a local lawyer just brought them in this morning as part of an estate and I was welcome to buy as many as I wanted.
I noticed on some of the hand rolled wrappers dates like 1967, 1966 etc. were hand written so you can imagine what was going through my mind. Anyways, I took the box of quarters and couldn't wait till I got back into my car. The 1967 marked roll was in fact a roll of 1967 centennial quarters, and all the others that were marked were what was written on the rolls. The unmarked rolls contained mostly 1968 quarters. I almost **** myself.
Anyways there was 32 rolls in total
1966 3 rolls
1967 5 rolls
1968 18 rolls
1964 2 rolls
4 rolls mixed dates from 1960-1968
Still in shock ...haven't calculated the silver value yet, but looks like I'm going to searching quarters now :)

I assume it was a collector that passed away and the lawyer just figured it was cash that was part of the estate and just deposited it.
I know I will definetly drop by that bank next time I'm in the area..you never know. Lightning might just hit the same place twice :)
-
Hi Stashthecash,
Congratulations on your awesome find. It is like hitting a mini-jackpot. You have several hundred dollars in silver content alone.
I am not surprised what banks can get. I recently received a lot of UNC 1954 notes... My $67 investment (face value) was worth about $500 in value of those notes.
Collectors must state in their Wills, what they have or it just gets tossed into the bank at face value. Executors don't know the values of coins, etc. To most of them it's spending money. To us collectors that manage to find them, it's hitting the lottery.
-
Wow, that's a crazy find! ???
I think that's upwards of $4,000 in melt value, all for $320?

I picked up some nice bank notes from a bank last month...some nice UNC birds and coloured series.what a great feeling.
Congrats again!

Good find and thx for sharing.

Well, I knew it had to happen eventually...My trusty bank cut me off from my supply of pennies...
What shall I do now? I still have many rolls to explore but after that... :-[

I was just thinking that I haven't read any of your updates lately and I certainly miss that....
Well you still have your convenience stores that you can pick up from... but just the other day I was at the bank and the fella ahead of me in line was asking about depositing pennies.. the teller gave him a bag... I approached him and told him I would pay him face value for the pennies and I'm looking for a few pennies in my collection...
That's one option....
I was also at Safeway last week.... and there was a mother daughter that were approaching the coin machine with what looked to be a very large and very full bag of coins...
I was in the check out but quickly stepped over and approached the couple, and told them who I was and that I liked collecting coins... (they both had an expression of skepticism on their face) I offered to pay them cash face value for their coin..
Most of their coin was loose and they didn't know exactly how much they had.. I had a look and ball parked it at $200... and told them I'd give them $10 for the bag to carry it in too...
I think the deal sounded too crazy not to pass up...and so they accepted.... There was actually a touch over $200 bucks in there and I managed to pick out 3 quarters that are pre '67... not exactly a huge score but at least I now have a few more pennies to go through...
There's millions of pennies out there just be resourceful.... and if that fails... get one of those coin machines and partner it up in a good location..... you'll have an endless supply! :D

1 x 65
6 x 68

Hi all,
I was at my local coffee shop and the tip jar had a few pennies in it. I asked the cashier if she minded exchanging them with me. She obliged with 9 cents...one of which was a 1929 US wheat cent! ;D
Check it out...

I threw in much more than 9 cents as a thank-you gesture, of course! :)
Now penny hunting becomes more fun as there are fewer in active circulation. Check those tip jars, watch the ground when you're out, and just plain ask! People will usually just GIVE you the pennies most of the time (Although I feel guilty just taking them, especially from the tip jars!)
You never know what you'll find...
Happy Hunting!

So it IS possible...I received pennies in change today from a Winners store! Got exactly 47 cents back! Woo Hoo! :)

I believe that Walmart stores are still giving pennies

I went to the bank and asked for a roll of loonies. I got a roll with the plastic wrapper that is used for new coins. I was very excited that I finally hit upon 2013 loonies. But alas it was 2012.
Almost 3+ months into March 2013 and to get a mint roll of 2012 loonies. So it looks like it will be while before the 2013's are out.
If history were to repeat itself then I think after every year of large mintage of a circulation coin there is low mintage of that same coin the following year (at least for loonies and toonies)

Now i assume that they were the new design loonies... imagine getting a full roll of the old design!

The 2012 Loon new design saw a very large mintage, they are very easy to find. I guess only time will tell rather or not lots of 2013 will be minted. Its all a question of supply and demand. I will never forget in 1991 when i was looking for all the 91 coins. Where is that quarter... i couldn't find one. I managed to get one from a dealer and that was before anyone knew the mintage was only 459,000 for that year. I guess they had no need that year for many quarters.
-
Mint employees were on strike in 1991. Also in 1970. Both those years have lower than average mintage. Mint managers didn't know how to run the 25 cent press in 91 I guess.
-
Some pennies are still in circulation. I was surprised when I got two in change at the local Staples this morning.

Oh so thats why the low mintage for those years... i also noticed too that the 5 and 10 cents in 1991 also had fairly low mintage as well compared to all other years.
Here's another question for you hdldddpd perhaps you might know (or of course if anyone else might know)... why did the RCM not circulate any 25 Cents in 1997 and 1998 (the only two years no quarters since 1927). Also why no dollars from 1997-2001 not circulated?
-
There were no circulation issue caribou from 1997 to 2000. They were only available in the uncirculated sets. Reason? There were hoards of the 1992 commemoratives floating around which reduced the '93 to '96 mintages. They then wanted to clear all of those in preparation for their massive millennium commemorative program.
-

Yes it is a new design one and even those are selling at $10 premium per roll.
Also my understanding of 1991 was that issue was because of a strike at the mint.

Dean:
With your search for pennies I recently went to the bank to see if they had anything interesting and once again a lady was unloading her pennies... she was already with the teller so I didn't want to interrupt that transaction, but when I told the lady at the business wicket that I wished I could get a hold of some more pennies... she said she is overwhelmed with pennies and would be happy to give me a few boxes...
So keep trying I think you may be pleasantly surprised if you ask.
-
Was also super excited yesterday..... I started to go through a bag I bought off a guy that was going to hand in to the bank....and the best find in the lot so far.. a 1933 penny in VF condition..
There has also been at least one or two 60's coins in each handful.

will do at some point... going to have to get a camera.. my 14 mo old son decided my other one made for a great toy at one point.... that didn't go so well for the lens.. :-[
-
I just came across this penny and had to post a picture... I need your help..
I think this is an error but want some confirmation as well as any information on this type of error.
*more pictures of all the other interesting finds will come shortly ... but this particular coin really intrigued me and was hoping to get any info on it asap*
One thing that was really interesting is that there is a similar "crater" on both sides of the coin in the same location ... which is why I don't think it's wear or damage but some sort of bad die strike..
-
argh.... i always have to re-read the tutorial to remember how to post pics
hopefully this works

If it wasn't squeezed then it could be a planchet flaw. If it was a planchet flaw the second 7 wound not be in the dent so I would guess it was squeezed. Looks like 1.5 cents worth of copper. Just my unprofessional opinion.
-
By looking at the pic, it doesn't look like an error. It looks like a damaged well circulated 1 cent. But again that's by looking at the pic and not seeing it in person.
-
Ohhh dang...thought I had come across something neat... I found it interesting that the damage was really on one spot of the coin both front and back as if something struck it...
Was doing some reading on coin errors and had thought that maybe it was a grease die strike error..
-
So finally the mystery is no more. The mintage report is out with the RCM Annual Report:
2012 $1 Loonie (Old Style) Officially called Aureate Nickel as opposed to One Dollar (P) - 2,414,000
2012 $2 Toonie (Old Style) Officially called Two Dollars as opposed to Two Dollars (P) - 1,531,000
I have found at least 7 2012 old style toonies and only 1 old style 2012 loonie in circulation. Also the premium on the mint wrapped roll of loonie is higher than the premium on the mint wrapped roll of toonie. Maybe things will change.
English version of RCM Annual report can be found at:
http://www.mint.ca/store/dyn/PDFs/RCM-12-AR_ENG_FINAL.pdf
One other interesting note for those who are into commemorative stuff from the Mint. Expect to pay higher prices in secondary market if you are not a Masters Club Member. The mint is planning for sell-outs. I have personally witnessed this recently with coin I wanted to buy and it was already being pre-sold at a higher price by a dealer. Normally dealers would start by offering it at the RCM price and increase the price after the mint is sold out. This is the first time I have encountered a pre-sale at a dealer at a higher price than the mint price.
"The Mint will continue to support secondary markets by balancing pricing and mintages to sellout about one-third of the numismatic coins issued."
Do I read price fixing?

thank you for the update Rupiah. So i guess the 2012 Loonie and toonie aren't as rare as we thought... on the other hand, of those 2,414,000 minted how many of them actually hit circulation?
Just as expected, the new 2012 loonies and toonies were mass produced 107,105,000 and 82,862,000 respectively. For the loonie it was the largest production since 1989 and the largest production for the toonie since 1996. It would not surprise me this year if the mint does not circulate any 2013 loonies or toonies. If they do, quantities would me much smaller.
-
Actually, I believe most of the old twoonies and loonies were destroyed during a truck crash last year involving these coins. So most of these coins never made it to circulation.

interesting. $3M worth of coins. But were the coins all 2012s?? This might explain why the original Loonies and toonies are so hard to find individually.
-
Yes, all the coins were 2012 issue $1 and $2 coins. These were made early in the year.

Hello all,
Today at work, I picked up two pennies off of the floor. One was a 1962 and the other was a 1964! What are the odds of finding 2 young Elizabeth coins on the same day? LOL.
Still have 20 boxes of pennies waiting to be searched, but I just haven't had the time...

I received a 2011 Boreal Forest toonie today. This is only the second one I have ever received. Still in nice shape too!

Got a 1968 nickel in change today. Coins from the 20th century :P are getting tougher and tougher to find in circulation...

I found a lucky penny for the first time in awhile. It's dated 1998 and was found in the lobby of a Royal Bank. I still pick up every one I find...I can't help it.
Funny how the penny has so rapidly disappeared...I'm not surprised though.

we still have a variety store in town that dishes out pennies...
if it's 5.02 he still asks for 2 cents or gives you back 3 if you give 5.05
I thought the rule was 2 cents round down 3 cents round up...
atleast I always get 2 cents of free gas when I fill up down the road :)

Found a 2012 non-security (old) toonie. Although the reported quantities of 2012 old toonies is less than the reported quantities of 2012 old loonie but I still have found more 2012 toonies than the 2011 loonies.
I am still running into plenty of toonies that are 1996 and plenty of loonies that are 1987. In a typical roll the proportion of first year coins:2012 security coins: all other coins is typically about 9:9:7.
I would have thought that with the alloy recycling program I would have had much less of the first year (1987, 1996) loonies and toonies.
-
The other day i looked through a full jar of pennies. Found a 1938 cent and also a US 1943 steel cent. They were not in great condition so they're not worth much. :( Though the 1943 steel cents were very common, its the first time i find one in change.

I got a Grey Cup loonie in change yesterday. :)

I just recently picked up well over 5000 coins in a sale...
one bag of wheaties.... as well as a whole bag of nickles.... I'm going to be sooo busy but I think it will be a lot of fun going through it all...

I have attached some photos of the 1962 cent. It appears to have these strange jagged lines around the "1 Cent" that resemble die cracks or are they just scratches from circulation?

I saw a kijiji ad that said that there is a service where they come to your home and take all your change and roll it up right there. They discount the total by 20% for the service and give you the cash.
Nice business :)

Just on Kijiji today, people are selling "unsearched bankers' boxes of Canadian pennies" for $50! What makes CRH most exciting is the fact that you can get the coins FOR FACE from the bank! I can't imagine paying double face value for a box of pennies...

I managed to score a couple of rolls of pennies from a local No Frills store today.
When I asked for them as my change, the cashier looked at me as if I was crazy. I told her I collect pennies but it still left her slightly confused. ^-^
I wonder if there are any keepers in those rolls...

Well,
The two rolls I picked up yesterday yielded the following:

2 x 67
Oh well, it is still fun trying to get pennies months after they were officially "retired". :)

Anyone picked up 2013 toonie in circulation yet? How common are they? I have not seen a single one in circulation yet. In comparison 2013 loonies are abundant almost to the point that I am beginning to see them replacing all pre-laser loonies.

Haven't seen any yet. No loonies either. I guess they circulated them in your area. Where i live i seem to always get 1987's... its very annoying! >:(

That's indeed sad about the loonies. If you do want 2013 loonies I run into them all the time. PM me and I would be happy to put one in the mail for you.
I did end up buying a toonie roll for more than the face value. Could not wait any longer.
And yes if the loonies are not 2012 and 2013 new version they are 1987. I cannot understand how they can cull the old ones without taking the 1987 ones. Maybe it is the sheer numbers.

Well today I decided on a whim to stop at a TD Canada Trust on my way home to try and get some new fives and tens. (It's the only bank open this late)

Nice find Dean.
Funny... I tried to deposit those old common, nickel dollars that were of no numismatic premium, and a TD Bank branch in Vancouver said that we do not accept them. I asked why, the bank teller said, it's not Canadian currency (I can perhaps understand, because she's in her teens and probably never encountered these coins before in her life!)
I then escalated that, she brought her branch manager, who was in her late 50's.... She reviewed the nickel dollars... And I am thinking, she will accept them. The manager then tells me that they are "not legal tender".
I was about to faint.
Eventually, that TD bank accepted them after a customer service supervisor appeared from her break. She recognized those coins.
-
I dunno why... but I love taking those nickel 50 cent and dollars home... the thought of them being destroyed just doesn't sit well with me.
Make sure for the 50 cent pieces you check to see of the '74s are missing the S... and for the Winnipeg centenial dollars.. check to see if you have any of the yoke varieties.. those are two pretty common finds for me....
-
You could always use them as tips in restaurants...I always get a kick out of seeing the look on people's faces when they get one... :)

I have a bunch of u.s. halves I have no idea what I was going to do with... so I have ended up tipping the gas jockey at my local gas station one of these every time he gives me full service.
Not a bad idea with the nickle dollars either... sad state when it takes 3 tellers to recognize legitimate currency.

They are still good keepers though.

I now have the problem of storing the nickel dollars and 50 cent pieces I got from the bank the other day. I do not want them sloshing around loose in a paper envelope or a bag.
The coin rolls available from the store do not accommodate these coins. Any suggestions?
Thanks,

When I store nickel dollars, I usually use those pharmacy prescription plastic pill bottles.
For the the 50 coins, I use those 35 mm film capsules. Hard to find them these days, fortunately, I kept some before the advent of the digital photo, but they are around.

Great ideas, Coinsplus.
Fortunately, I do not take any medication so I'll have to ask my relatives (who are falling apart :) for their empty pill containers. As for the film canisters, I'll check the local photo place the next time I'm by.

You're right I just noticed that now and I've been to the mint's website how many times :o. But I believe they do it that way because a roll of loonies is also 25 coins. I know American half dollar rolls are 10$ (20 coins) and their large silver dollars (or later clad Ike dollars) are 20$ (also 20 coins).

I managed to score a dollar's worth of pennies from my bank today. The teller was happy to give them up so that he wouldn't have to deposit them :)
Out of 100 pieces, the only keeper was a single 1967 coin.
Oh well, at least I have a source of pennies at the bank!

6 x 64
3 x 65
3 x 66
4 x 67
5 x 68
6 x 69
USA
1953 D
1954 D
Bermuda 1 Cent 1990
German 2 Euro cents 2002
All in all, not too terribly exciting except for that nice '48 cent... :)
Dean
-
On closer inspection of my photo of the '48 cent above, I noticed two things.
1. There appears to be a line extending from the tip of the first "A" in "GRATIA" toward the rim
2. A similar line appears at the bottom of the King's bust at the neck. The line seems to be extending on an angle towards the denticles at the bottom of the portrait. Are these die cracks?
There is some red lustre on this coin that did not show up well in the pictures. I believe that these lines are raised and are not simply scratches from circulation.
What do you think?
Dean
-
You are correct these are die cracks, you can find cracks similiar on many George VI coinage not just the cent. There are three types of 1948 cents you can find in circulation, this one is a "A" points to a large denticle....the "A" being the last "A" in Gratia. Check all your 1948 cents to see if you can find a small denticle variety, they're well worth keeping.
Cheers, Bill

Eh, maybe you should keep it if, deemed by you, in good condition.

For your collection sure. It has been offered through coin exchanges so I think there are plenty of them around and I think the mintage is close to 7 million. Rough riders is a bit more scarce.
I have seen some rolls of 25s being sold for around 40 so even the best of coins probably can be had for around $2.
I have seen one error variety with a die chip around the anchor on the reverse. That may be an interesting find.

The Navy dollar isn't hard to find. The hardest ones to find are the 2010 Roughriders and of course the 2012 original loon dollar. The 2010 loon dollar is also not simple to find.

Funny, this is the first one I've seen from circulation and I live in downtown Toronto. You'd think there would be millions of these loonies floating around T.O.
I have never encountered any 2012 old design loonies or toonies and have only one Roughriders loonie in my possession. All we seem to be getting are 2012 new design loonies and toonies. I guess the GTA was flooded with the new coins last year and commemoratives weren't widely distributed through the channels at the time.

Dean
It all depends on where the rolls were distributed i guess. Here in Montreal like Toronto there are tons of the new 2012 $1/$2. Now i am seeing lots of 2013 loonies, and i can tell you that 2013 is VERY common! I have seen on occasion not very often the military dollar but never have i seen a roughriders yet.

It would seem that way. But the following would help put things in perspective:
The ratio of regular circulation coins to the total commemorative coins is low. There are about 1 billion regular issue coins not including the new laser marked 2012 and 2013 loonies. In comparison the commemorative as a total (in 1994 and 1995 they were the regulars) are less than 100 million.
Some commemorative coins such as the Vancouver lucky loonie, Terry Fox were introduced in much larger numbers than others like the Navy. The ratio is almost 2:1.
Then it is the location where these coins may have been introduced in larger numbers relative to other locations.
Finally it is the hoarding of these coins. I would not underestimate this. For a total of 5 million mintage many are distributed as coin exchanges and are held by collectors at large.
The probability of finding any of these coins that were issued in quantities of 5 million is about the same.
Wonder what the experience has been with Parks Canada Loonie for instance.
In any case things will be get more scarcer as the alloy recovery program results in more 2012 and 2013 new loonies replacing the older coins
-
2013 is VERY common! I have seen on occasion not very often the military dollar but never have i seen a roughriders yet.
Similar experience here in Toronto. I finally bit the bullet and bought 5 pack of Rough Rider original mint coin exchange package for $8.00 from a very large local dealer. Their regular is $10 for 5 but they were on sale for $8.
Interestingly enough though the same dealer was selling the Navy original mint coin exchange package for $25 and they were out of stock on it.
So maybe the market seems to be telling a different story.

Got a 2010 Vancouver Olympic loonie in change today...LOL

That's a lucky find right there. Those things are just so hard to find its unbelievable. I've found more George VI nickels than I have those rabbits. :D

Are you serious? ;)
I would love to find some George VI or George V nickels in change...
As late as the 1990s, I was getting these and many other interesting coins in circulation, but that has definately changed since the Alloy Recovery Program came into play. Most coinage is dreadfully boring now, with most coins being from the year 2000 or newer...
I guess the Law of Averages states that if one searches through enough coins, the good stuff eventually pops up...
Cheers,

hold on to your hat Dean, I just put back into the system a roll from 1944 and part roll from 1945 as well as some '55& '58's. the 44-45's were probably unc. except the rolls had got wet at some point in time and were rusted together in a solid piece.....happy huntin

Yup, they're a greedy bunch at the RCM. In the last year or 2 I would search rolls of pennies (when I could still get them) and rolls of nickels from the bank every so often. If I ever got machine wrapped rolls, they'd always be year 2000 and newer, nothing older in them. I'd always try to get customer wrapped rolls which always had the good stuff. But with the alloy recovery program going on in the last few years you can definitely tell the older stuff is harder to get even in those customer wrapped rolls. If you take nickels for example, the pre 1981 ones (made of pure nickel) last year roughly 10% of the coins searched were these (for me). In the last few months it's getting closer to around 5%. :(
That won't discourage me though, if I'm finding less I'll just have to search more! ;)

Just picked up:
2 x 1988 $100 bills EF/AU condition
$40 worth of nickels... and a few pennies :)
I wonder what's inside...

I got a call from my favourite bank branch the other day saying they had 91 "old $10s without the security stripe" and asked if I wanted them. I said sure, figuring they were likely 2001 series. Maybe I might find an FEE or something, and the rest would be deposited again.
Turns out they were all 1954 modified $10s. Most were in well circulated shape, but there were a few nicer ones. Nothing AU or better though.
The next day was the local coin club meeting where I gave out dozens of them as change in our auction. Anything left over at the end was available to members to exchange with me.
I still have the few nicer ones... Anyone want them? PM me. (Replies posted to this thread will be removed).

Yesterday, in $40 of nickels I found:
$27.25 plated coins from 2001-present
$11.15 in coins from 1959-1999
21 US nickels
55 cents in 2005 V nickels
Dean
-
I picked up another $20 in nickels from a local store today...
They looked at me funny but they were relieved to get rid of them! Anyone have any better luck with nickels? I like to keep the ones up 'till 1981 for sure plus all of the commemoratives (except perhaps the 2002 jubilee coins simply because there are so many of them).
Anyway, here are the finds:
1 x 1960, 62, 69
1970-81: x13
1982-89: x15
1990-99: x22
Commemoratives:
1 x 2005 "V"
1 x 1867-1992

Commemoratives: 1 x 2005

My finds from $20 of nickels today:
This was a better batch than the last one! :)
1960-69: 10
1970-79: 28
1980-81: 7
1982-89: 40
1990-99: 35
Commemoratives:
1 x 1992
2 x 2005
USA x 11
I have to say that nickel CRH is not as exciting as pennies, as there are fewer older interesting dates to be found. Maybe I haven't looked through enough rolls yet!
Happy hunting,

I noticed that it is really different hunting nickels, because there are very few young Elizabeth coins to be found, never mind George VI dates...
The 1967 commemorative is really tough to find...This is only my 2nd one so far...
I really miss pennies :(
Happy hunting,

Keep peeling out those U.S. coins. At a 10-per-cent premium now (if you take them to the U.S.), they will soon pay for your time searching..
-
I've been pretty busy recently so no coins searched in a while :(
Actually I still have the nickels I need to return from the last batch I searched a few weeks ago. The results from those were a 56, 59, 63, 64, about 20-30 from 65-81 and a 2000p from 40$ searched.
Completely forgot to post about these since this was around the holidays :-[
But hopefully I'll get a chance to pick up some coins again soon! :) In the meantime I'll keep reading your finds Dean! ;)

Not feeling too well today so I did some coin roll hunting.

Do you often find 2000P 5 cents? These are quite scarce in the last 14 years i have only found 3. Other 5 Cents to look out for 1977 low 7, 1990 "Bare belly" beaver and 1996 far 6 and if your really lucky 1964 with the extra water line.

Hi JB2007,
I haven't yet found a 2000P and I didn't know about the other varieties. I guess I'll have to keep a sharper eye out for them now!
BTW, today I received a new 2014 lucky loonie and a 100th Grey cup loonie in change! :)

I went through $40 of nickels today and found the following pieces:
8 x USA
1 x 2012 Trinidad & Tobago 25 cent piece
1 x 1963
1 x 1964
6 x 1965-69
24 x 1970-79
14 x 1980-81
56 x 1982-89
24 x 1990-99
Commemoratives:
5 x 2005
Notable/scarce:
1 x 1991 (lustrous)
I can't remember when I last found a 1991 coin in change... :)
However, WHERE are all of the George VI and George V nickels hiding out there? People seem to be finding them from boxes, but not me...at least not yet...
Happy hunting,
Dean

Nice! :) I will keep my eyes open for one in my change. I expect like the other years this one won't be hard to find.
Found one today. Just noticed that they used the same lucky loon from 2012 but instead they are dated 2014.

I picked up $14 worth of nickels today an I was pleasantly surprised by the finds in so few rolls...
I got 3 rolls of US nickels dating from the 1960s-early 2000s. There was not a single "forward facing" Jefferson in the lot! :)
Within these 3 rolls, I managed to pull out the following noteworthy coins:
1954, 1956 and 1943
{http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/8723/cye6.jpg:http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/8723/cye6.th.jpg}
Here are specific shots of the 1943 piece. It is different because it has a large "S" above Montecello...
{http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/6673/4hfc.jpg:http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/6673/4hfc.th.jpg}
Also in this batch, I found my first 2000P nickel. I heard that they are rare...
{http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/5707/0rcc.jpg:http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/5707/0rcc.th.jpg}
The remainder of the rolls included the following coins:
1970-79: 6
1980-91: 2
1982-89: 2
1990-99: 10
Commemoratives:
2005: 2
It's amazing what you find sometimes! This was after the teller actually took back a few rolls that she was going to sell me because they did not have enough change in the till!
Happy hunting,
Dean

That 1943 American nickel is made of 35% silver. That is also why the mint mark is above Monticello. They made them from 1942-45 so that they could use the nickel metal for the war effort, so instead made them with silver. Awesome find! :)
-
Also in this batch, I found my first 2000P nickel. I heard that they are rare...
The 2000P had a quantity minted of only 4,899,000. It is the nickel with the lowest mintage since 1951.

I've gone through thousands of dollars of quarters over the last few months. I wrote a short article describing the fun I had with the first 50,000 coins in the February Waterloo Coin Society Newsletter. Look for the article in an upcoming issue of the Ontario Numismatist as well.
I even have 50 rolls of quarters and 10 rolls of toonies waiting for me to hunt through tonight.

Hi all,
I managed to pick up a HUGE lot from a local bank today. Not only did I score lots of 50 cent and nickel dollars, I managed to get SILVER coins at face too!
Check it out:

This is the same bank that I had earlier scored a huge batch of 50 cent pieces and nickel dollars. I think it's the same person bringing them in, but I can't figure out why someone would let silver coins go at face value.
Here is a shot of the whole pick up from today:

Its possible that the regular loon dollar has not been circulated yet. As for all other den. they are all in circulation.
-
Even the 2014 toonie?
-
Forget 2014 - I have hardly found the 2013 toonie. In fact I would say the 2013 toonie for me has been more uncommon than the 2012 old style toonie in our area.
-
Even the 2014 toonie?
Yes, the 2014 $2 are in circulation. I have one. As for the 2013, they're not easy to find. I'm anxious to see how many the RCM actually minted of these. I expect a mintage to be around 3,000,000.
-
Yes! Got a 2012 old style toonie in change today! First one that I have found from circulation! ;D
Now if only I can find the old style loonie as well >:(
For 2014 coins, I've only seen the quarter and the lucky loonie so far. Weird since I usually see nickels, dimes and quarter in February/March and then the loonies and toonies April/May.

Picked up $14 in nickels today and found the following coins:
1 x 1960, 62, 63
3 x 1964
7 x 1965-69
28 x 1970-79
4 x 1980-81
34 x 1982-89
41 x 1990-99
USA x 16
Commemoratives:
3 x 1992
1 x 2005
One roll was completely composed of pre 1982 nickels! Looks like someone emptied out their piggy bank...
Also got a brief glimpse of a 54 $1000. The teller was JUST about to sell it to me but then the head teller gave her the standard line "we cannot circulate those anymore..." I couldn't get the serial number before it was whisked away from me. It looked to be an EF/AU BOUEY RASMINSKY note! :(
Happy hunting,

1942
1960
1961
2 x 1962
8 x 1963-64
9 x 1965-69
37 x 1970-79
8 x 1980-81

10 x 2005
USA
11 (including 1 x 1956)
Foreign
Bahamas 1994 25 cents

1 x 2000P
Also managed to salvage a multicoloured $1 and a roll of pennies form the bank when I picked up this batch.
1942 is my oldest nickel found in a coin roll. I hope to eventually come across a George V nickel or w war nickel some day. The 1967 centennial rabbits are almost non-existent. I wonder what happened to them all?
Happy hunting,

Is the 1942 nickel made of tombac or nickel? It was made in both metals that year. The tombac one will be a brownish color and 12 sided while the nickel one will be grey and round.
The 1967 centennial rabbits are almost non-existent. I wonder what happened to them all?
Funny because everyone in my family says the same thing. Some people say they were already hard to find when they first released them. :D

Hello PoP,
No, the '42 is the plain old nickel variety. A tombac version would have been quite the find!
I have only obtained TWO centennial rabbits since I started CRH nickels in January of this year. I have found more 2000P nickels than I have '67 rabbits!
Regardless of what I get, CRH is still fun and there are lots of coins to be found out there!
Happy Hunting,

I have on occasion gotten the 67 rabbit in my change and i have noticed that aswell that there doesn't seem to be many around even though it was a decent mintage rate for 1967. I think the reason is that many people kept them much like the 1967 $1 series. Many years back i came across a bag containing about 90 1967 25¢ pieces. They were all very heavily circulated and don't grade better than VG-8.

Picked up 10 pennies today as change from Wendy's in North York...LOL.

I found this a couple weeks ago. I was ecstatic since I've been meaning to buy /acquire one of these errors for quite awhile.

FINALLY after MONTHS of searching... A Macklem-Carney $5! I got this when I dumped off my nickel rolls and asked for fivers in return...Wow, these are hard to get...A G/VG at best but still a keeper. HAG 5986108 15/37

nice finds Dean.
I managed to get an HAJ earlier this year. I will continue hanging onto it. Though many say these 5's are hard to find, they seem to be widely available here in Quebec. I have seen quite a few HAFs and HAGs. One purchase earlier this year, i got 3 fives all were of macklem-carney.

Well it's been a while since I last searched through some rolls of nickels, actually rolls of any coins to be honest but I found some time and decided to search some. I picked up 40$ worth of nickels. I found:
Pre 1981: 11 + 1 1961 12 sided nickel
1982-2000: 32
American: 5
2000 P: 2
The amount of pre 1981 nickels was low though finding the 2 2000 P made up for it I guess. :)
I was quite surprised at the low amount of pre 1981, I would usually get on average 3-4 per roll as late as last year. Though this could just be an out of the ordinary-slightly lower than usual batch.
-
I got really lucky today and got a 1941 nickel in change from the corner store! :)
It's been a while since I got a coin with a king on it in change, I didn't even have to search any rolls to get it. Always check your change folks! ;)
-
Hi everyone! I picked up 60$ in nickels this week and this is what I got:
Pre 1981: 30 + 5x1964 1x1962 2x1960 1x1942 (nickel not tombac)
1982-2000: 79
American: 14 + 1x1964 1x1962 D 1x1942 (cupronickel not silver)
2000 P: 3
Both 1942 coins came from the same roll which I found cool. Overall I'd say it was a very successful hunt in terms of older coins found. :)
-
Hi,
I had a fantastic day at the bank today...Picked up some nickel dollars and fifty cent pieces but also a nice load of banknotes!
$1000 bill 1988
2 x EFA multicoloured $50s both have writing on them :(
5 x 1979 $20 with one "516" replacement! Too bad it's the one with a huge teller stamp and writing on it! :(
1 x 1973 $1
1 x 1976 US $2
Check it out!

Awesome finds Dean! Definitely a few nice pieces you got there and like you said too bad some of the rarer ones have writing and junk on them :(. But still cool being able to have them!
Also I got another 60$ in nickels this week and here is what I found:
Pre 1981: 38 + 5x1964 1x1961
1982-2000: 80
American: 9
2000 P: 1
Foreign: 2006 New Zealand 20 cent coin
First time I've gotten a coin from New Zealand so that was pretty cool :) And surprisingly I also got 3 dimes too ???
How does one even mistakenly put a dime in a roll of nickels they aren't even close to the size of the nickel!
-

Hi PoP,
I think that sometimes people mindlessly shove coins into the wrapper when they clean out their stash...Overall, I find that I am often SHORT a coin or two...(see post on short rolls) rather than UP any money.
Lately, my finds have been sparse with regards to pre 1970 nickels. I hope that trend will change soon...
Happy Hunting!

It always pays to be nice to strangers... ;D
I was in Orillia on Saturday and as I was walking out of the gas bar an older fellow was standing on the sidewalk cursing as his brown paper bag broke open onto the payment ....everyone was passing by because of the rain, but I was already wet from pumping gas so I went over to help him pick up his items that came out of the bag ....15 rolls of quarters and the one wrapper that came apart looked like it was all silver ...I asked him were he was headed assuming he was going to a coin store to sell them but he answered to the $@%%# bank, but it was already closed....went to the atm in the gas bar gave him $150 and pulled over to the side street. 7 rolls nothing 8 rolls all 64 and under ....finally can get that brake job on the car :)
You just never know what's coming around the corner ...but it was the first time I got screwed for using a bank machine that charged me 3 bucks for a withdrawl :D

Hey Squid,
Nice find!
Sometimes the stars line up just right eh? It was good of you to help out that stranger and you got some silver to boot! The bullion value will more than cover the $3 fee...Make sure you check 'em all for rarities... :)
Dean
-
If I had seen that there was silver in the roll that broke open I would have told him that he had something worth more than face value and made an offer to look through the coins and buy the silver at a decent price.
-
7 rolls nothing 8 rolls all 64 and under ....
I can only dream of getting a silver score like that, congrats! :) The only time I get lucky with finding silver is by looking in the reject tray of the coinstar machines in grocery stores and even then its extremely rare if I find anything in them!
-

And I suppose if a bank teller gave you a solid serial # 8888888 you would tell them what it was worth and make them an offer over face value.... :-X
Or if you worked in a retail store and someone gave you a few silver coins to pay for the item you would tell them what they are worth :-\
It's like saying ever dealer out there is Really telling people what they have...what it is worth...and how much they should get....and in this case I think it is unfair to a customer if they don't....

Hi everyone, here are my finds from 40$ in nickels.
Pre 1981: 24 + 1x1964 1x1963
1982-2000: 90
American: 5
2000 P: 2
Not that many older ones but I'll happily take this as its better than finding rolls with nothing but year 2000+ coins in them.
-
Hi everyone, here are the results from searching 40$ in nickels.
Pre 1981: 32 + 3x1964 1x1942 (nickel not tombac)
1982-2000: 81
American: 11
2000 P: 0
A decent batch I guess, its nice getting a King George VI nickel. :)
-
Hi all, here are my finds from 60$ in nickels.
Pre 1981: 35 + 2x1964 1x1961 1x1947 Maple Leaf
1982-2000: 66
American: 14 + 1x1957 D
2000 P: 3
Foreign: 2012 British 20 pence
Some pretty decent finds I would say. Has anyone else been coin roll hunting recently? :)
-
I found one lonely 1966 nickel in a coin roll yesterday.
I also found three pennies on the floor of the subway platform on my way home...:)
Dean
-
I had the chance to search $20 in nickels yesterday.
Here are the results:
3 x 1965-69
11 x 1970-79
1 x 1981
17 x 1982-89
16 x 1990-99
USA: x9
Commemoratives:
1 x 1992
5 x 2005
I really miss searching pennies...The nickels offer far fewer opportunities for interesting finds due to the alloy recovery program. Searching quarters and dimes is futile these days and my luck with loonie and toonie rolls is not so great.
(although I did find a nice 1995 peace dollar the other day, not from a roll, but from circulation.)
I guess I'll have to make it up in volume :)

I recently picked up a 2015 loonie. I could not help but notice that the finish on it is much more eye catching than the finishes on the prior years with similar designs.
Anyone else feel the same?

Keep hunting those rolls...

I picked up a couple of rolls of pennies from a friendly bank teller at my local branch. He also let me have 2 UNC Journey $5 and 1 AU Birds $50 that were also loitering in the cash cage!

It's been awhile since I have posted on the forum but I recently acquired a very large lot of Canadian coins and thought I would share with you Dean.
Of the $150 in face that I had received half was quarters of no significance... another $20 in dimes which also didn't give up much... but I just finished sorting the nickels....

Hey Shylo,
That's quite the treasure trove of vintage nickels you've found. I've always liked the 1922-36 nickels.
Just yesterday, I got 5 rolls of pre 1981 nickels from my local bank. Mostly from the 1970's but still a cool find. The teller also let me have 5 1971 tens, 2 Birds $2 and a Birds $5. Not bad for a Friday! :)
It just goes to show you that there is still treasure lurking out there if you're willing to look for it!
Keep hunting those rolls! I enjoy reading about what other people find in their coin rolls.

I've been neglecting this thread for quite some time! :)
Yesterday, the teller at my local bank gave me a 1967 dime. It's not much, but it's rare to see any silver at all these days!

The 2017 coins all have very low mintage compared to all other years. So far i have only found a 2017 dollar and surprisingly a colored 2 dollar in my change.

Hi,
I received a colourized D-Day $2 coin in change today. Should I keep it?

I believe the d-day colored is more common than the non-colored as per mintage numbers (2,000,000 vs 1,000,000). Please correct me if im wrong.

Today, picked up the new 2020 Bill Reid, Circulating $2 Coloured Coin, from my local RBC Bank Branch. It is gorgeous!!!

The Royal Canadian Mint has launched a new toonie to commemorate the legacy of Haida artist Bill Reid, more than 20 years after his death.
The new $2 coin, which marks 100 years since Reid's birth, enters circulation Tuesday.
"The mint is delighted to add the story of Bill Reid's pivotal role in raising awareness of Haida art, and the traditions and culture it represents to the long list of circulation coins celebrating what makes us proud to be Canadian," said Marie Lemay, president and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint in a written statement.
-
I'm surprised you managed to get any... It is pretty much impossible for me to get new coin anywhere in the city these days as no banks order new coins and just recycle the old stuff from branch to branch.
-
It’s good to have friendly bank tellers share their inside scoop. From what I heard, branches only received 100 rolls.

Hello There, I had the chance to get the box and I am looking to keep it.However I would like to know where I can find the mintage for the coins.Thank you so much.

3,000,000 total... 2,000,000 color and 1,000,000 no color.

Nice find! I'd be lucky to find any at a bank and if I do, the tellers will limit me to a couple rolls...

Hi,
I picked up a roll of toonies today and I decided to search it.
I was surprised to see a wide range of dares spanning the entire lifespan of the toonie, from 1996-2021.
I picked out some coins with less than 20 million minted:
1997, 2001, 2013 and 2014.
I also found a regular polar bear reverse 2020 toonie. I can’t find any mintage numbers for 2020.
Are any of these coins worth keeping?

I have been searching rolls of toonies since March. I've returned all of the above - none of them are rare.
The ones to look out for include:
- 2017 Coloured Northern Lights
- 2018 Coloured Armistice
- 2012 pre-security
- Anything not produced specifically for circulation (ie: 2017 polar bear, proof and specimen coins, 1999 polar bear, etc.)
Also beware of counterfeits! The "walrus" toonies that hit the news last week are really only found near the ON/QC border. I don't expect them to spread much and I don't think terribly many have been released. However, the much bigger issue is the "Camel Toe" toonies. They're much, much closer to the real thing and there are millions of them in circulation in the GTA and the rest of southern Ontario (coast-to-coast actually, but in lower concentrations). Check out CamelToeToonies.ca (http://CamelToeToonies.ca) for more information.

I've received several examples of the Inuit coin from banks in Toronto.
