Title: Grading Question re BC-27a
Post by: eyevet on March 23, 2004, 12:41:01 am
I bought this BC-27a note as an EF-AU.  It was decribed in the auction catalogue as "A rather crisp note that is bright and clean and a bit off centre to the right".  It appears to me that the paper of the note is stained in both upper corners. This is more apparent from the back side of the note.  On the front of the note, the last 6 of the right hand serial number which reaches the edge of the stain appears to be slightly damaged possibly
from an attempt at cleaning the note?

Your opinions please.

When dealing with something EF-AU, a higher quality picture is needed.  Send me the originals, Mike, and I'll post a link to them.

Hi,

After viewing the scans, it appears that this note could have been discoloured by two things: 1) having some sort of adhesive at the top corners like clear liquid glue or 2) an attempt to use a solvent of some sort to remove soiling at the corners.  This could explain why the 6 in the serial number is partially worn.

Just my opinion though,
Cheers,
Dean.

Those stains look just like the ones on a couple of otherwise UNC 1979 $5's I put away for safekeeping a long time ago.  I put them into an envelope with a gummed flap.  Eventually the envelope got wet somehow and the gum stained the notes.  :'(

I know, I know, my own fault for improper storage.  But hey, I didn't know any better, I was only 10 years old at the time.  :-/

To me it looks like the note was folded in half and then something was spilled in it or the note was folded and put down on something :-/
