I am trying to determine a market value for a 1898 $1 Courtney, Inward with the low serial number 000070.
I have been told that this note grades VG-F but I would conservatively say it grades VG. The book value
on this issue in VG is $225.
I have never seen a low serial number under 100 in this issue. The catalogue does not value low serial
number notes before the 1935 issue.
Any insights or comments would be appreciated.
Thanks,
...Arthur

Well here's a pic of a low number 1898 $1 note. They don't get lower than this!

The #000070 Courtney "Ones Inward" note is important because it is from SERIES A, i.e., from the very first series of any 1898 note printed. The #000001 note is important too although it is from SERIES L with the later Boville signature. By checking page 153 of the Charlton catalogue one can see that 19 x 4 = 76 notes with Serial #000001 were printed but how many of those are still in existence is anybody's guess. I remember being offered a high-grade #000001 note of the 1898 issue way back in 1977/1978 by Ash(ok) Prakash and the asking price at that time was $1000 (I don't recall which series letter it carried though). It could well have been the one in Gary's post above!

I wish I could say that this number one note was mine but I can only dream of such a note in my collection.
This note sold in the Heritage auction about 7 or 8 years ago before Heritage was very popular in Canada for $7,500 U.S. (when a US dollar cost $1.45 CDN) not including their fees.

Well Gary, from what I've seen in other threads such as "Let's see your sets", or whatever it was called, you've got a stellar collection, with many, many wicked notes! 8)

Well thank you so much but there are some members here that have some notes that I will never be able to afford and only wish I could.
It's not like a 1935 $1 0000008 note, congratulations Arthur.
I've always wanted a 1924 $5 note but really don't think I'll get one.
