Title: What happened between 1996 and 2001?
Post by: Seth on September 07, 2010, 03:20:15 am
Something I've been wondering about for a while.  I got into this hobby just as the whole "new insert" phenomenon was taking collectors by storm in 2001.  Paul has summarized it nicely here:  http://www.cdnpapermoney.com/English/BoC/Insert_Notes.htm

So, my question is... What happened in the five year period between the BoC's announcement of the end of X notes in 1996 (mentioned in Paul's article), and the time GPZ and FDZ inserts started showing up in 2001?  Were X replacement notes still used during that time?

Okay, a more careful reading of my Charlton reveals to me that the "new inserts" started making their appearances a bit before before GPZ and FDZ.   It seems that the earliest "new inserts" reported were GOT, BDP, AWI, EVZ, FHZ, and BJR.

Did these prefixes really start appearing as far back as 1996?  It doesn't seem like that long ago.  But then I've never really paid much attention to insert notes before, so please forgive me if I'm asking dumb questions.

The very first inserts showed up on on late Bonin-Thiessen notes. The changeover to Knight-Thiessen was in 1999.  The very last note with X was ANX which i believe was issued in 1998. I would say that the changeover to insert notes propably occured sometime late 1998 or early 1999... not before.

Now the question is... are there more insert ranges out there in the birds series that still today have not been made official?

I would find it highly unlikely that all of the insert ranges have been "officially" recorded and known. Even now when we look at the current journey series many ranges have been found by brick searchers that will NEVER be made official simply because only one searcher has found a note or range that no one else has found thereby it is not confirmed. I know I personally have found both sheet and snr insert notes that will likely never be anything, but a regular issued note ...that's just the way it is .....but without confirmation things would be worse...

I do believe that every single replacement note ever used from the Asterix, X to the current modern replacement ranges were all recorded. I would not be surprised at all if several ranges were missed after the change from the X notes since most would have assumed the X’s were still being used as replacements, you wouldn’t have know any differently. I have in conversation talked to people that did notice something had changed but at first never once thought they were a new style of replacements.

Im sure the bank of canada has that list, they know exactly which notes/ranges are replacements. If only they could just tell us!
