Title: FYI new series status
Post by: friedsquid on June 02, 2011, 04:40:17 pm
I was just informed that we should have information on the new $100 and $50 banknotes on or before June 22nd. :)

Terrific!  This will make for great filler for those on a tight deadline to finish their July Newsletters.  Looking forward to the release and pictures of the banknotes. 8)

Not sure if this is the appropriate place, but here's an interesting video on how polymer notes are produced, the interesting part is how the substrate itself is produced.

Anyone noticed that the article on the BOC's website has disappeared, and there is no mention of an event today on the website? Hope it's not delayed.  ???

EDIT: Retracted, but when I clicked the link it said the "page was not available" and I couldn't find a mention about it on the BOC's website at the time.

I had a hell of a time trying to open the pdf file, so here are thumbnails of the notes from Wizard1's post in case anyone else can't open the pdf easily:

{http://img861.imageshack.us/img861/5851/50b.jpg:http://img861.imageshack.us/img861/5851/50b.th.jpg}

I wonder if the actual notes will be exactly as pictured here?  If so, the BofC has done away with the:
-Canadian Coat of Arms :o ???
-Copyright notice
-Names of the buildings on the face of the notes
-Bar codes next to the serial numbers, and
-Year the notes were printed.

I'm surprised the BOC hasn't uploaded the information about security features on its website yet

Anyways, they have a video of the new $100 on Youtube, almost the same as the one we saw at the unveiling ceremony, but minus the $50.  :(

Thanks for the link AZ; I have added the front of the $50 note to my original post.  :)

I've actually e-mailed the Bank of Canada about the omission of Canada's Coat of Arms on the new series.  I find this to be just about as scandalous as the Devil's Face controversy with the 1954 series (for you trivia buffs, was coincidentally the first series that featured the Coat of Arms)!

Am I alone here??

In these news articles, there's an image of the real note it appears... the colour seems to be a lot lighter than the version posted on the BoC website.

Makes perfect sense... I expected prefixes EKA-EKZ to be released after EJA-EJZ. Looks like as many as 220 million polymer hundreds may have been printed already (unless of course the new prefixes have not been used sequentially from (EK)A to (EK)Z).

This link shows the back of the new note.

http://www.radio-canada.ca/nouvelles/Economie/2011/06/20/017-billets-polymere-canada.shtml

The serial number is EKZ9351553.  I find a bit strange that the font used to print the serial seems very similar to the one used in the Journey's Serie...

At least, we have an idea of the prefix in which the new serie begins...

Watch the video

CHECK OUT the above video at 2 Minutes into the video.... Thats the coolest part to me of the new notes. There's a security feature you won't know about until you see the video. Apparently if you shine a light through the maple leaf window a hidden design depicting the denomination will appear!

Yes i have noticed that too, the fifty is the same. I believe its the same fonts used from the Journey notes, there are some similarities.

I could see the year of issue in the top right hand corner below the 100 on the front of the note. You can see it at around 56 seconds in to the Bank of Canada YouTube video. I personally think the new notes look great...not a radical departure from prior issues. I like the clear window areas of the notes.

The Bank of Canada's website shows good pics of the new 50 and 100 notes. The issue date is on the top right corner. For the 100 its got 2011 and 2012 for the $50. I have noticed on the reverse there is no signs of any "printed in 2011" like on the bottom of all Journey notes, did anyone else notice?

This feature appears to do the same thing as a Christmas novelty item that I have.  It's a pair of cardboard glasses, similar to the red-blue ones that come with 3-D comic books, but with clear lenses.  Put them on, and then look at any distant point of light, like a street lamp across the street at night.  An image of Santa appears like a halo around the light.  It doesn't work with close lights or in a brightly lit room.  The brighter and smaller the point, and the darker the background, the better the effect.

I find a bit strange that the font used to print the serial seems very similar to the one used in the Journey's Serie...

The font used is OCR-B (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OCR-B), which is an international standard open-source machine readable font.  You will see the same font on nearly any item in the grocery store on the UPC code.  I predict that OCR-B will continue to be the serial number font for quite some time.

How/where did you get one?  Did you get to keep it?  MORE INFO!!!!!!

The BoC said the new theme is Frontiers.  Would that not make the most sense...the Frontier Series?

Works for me.  Calling them the polymer notes works for the time being, but in another decade or so...we'll be searching for another name.

Just wonder if the front & back position numbers on this note are in line with the existing SNDB matrix.

$20      The Canadian National Vimy Memorial—evokes the contributions and sacrifices of Canadians in conflicts throughout our history. (Portrait: HM Queen Elizabeth II)

$10      The Canadian train—represents Canada’s great technical feat of linking its eastern and western frontiers by what was, at the time, the longest railway ever built. (Portrait: Sir John A. Macdonald)

$5        Canadarm2 and Dextre—symbolize Canada’s continuing contribution to the international space program through robotics innovation. (Portrait: Sir Wilfrid Laurier)

I am interested in seeing what the $10 note will actually look like :)

I heard that the production of new $20 bills is delayed because of a design change.  They're going with images of the Vancouver hockey night riots instead  :D

I made an interesting observation:  the sipover of the serials:

I made a cut and an enlargment (about 150%) of a "printcreen" in the earlier part on the video:

Here the serials one can see:

(EKZ8)541069
EKZ8549069
EKZ8557069

So the skipover seems to be 8000 from one note to the lower next note.

The layout is 5 x 9 notes=45 notes per sheet.

8000 x 45 = 360000 notes per run..

Yes I did get my hand on a few, but I had to give them back  :'(
I went to the press release, and there were actual notes that were available to handle.
Ii did ask if there would be a date for an exchange of old for new, and at the time there is not, they will be available through the banks when they are released.

Well, this seems to be consistent with the existing numbering patterns, so hopefully there aren't too many surprises.

Just a reminder to all, once the new series comes out, it will be very important to add your notes to the SNDB. Using all of this information, we can quickly keep on top of things and figure out what's going on in terms of numbering, etc.
