For years now I have thought that the RCM has been crazy in the numbers and nature of "collectible" coins it churns out.
How much longer before we get, oh, I don't know, glow-in-the-dark dinosaur quarters?

and that's why I stopped collecting coins 15 years ago. The RCM is just as bad as Upper Deck and their hockey cards with subsets of sets and subsets of subsets. Who needs a gazillion different quarters.......ah yes the RMC!

I'd love to see an appropriate commemorative note from BoC. But I can't see the government in their current hack and slash mode approving of the idea.

Assuming that there's no volume discount for printing the polymers and each note does indeed cost 20 cents, the batch of new $100 would cost (.2 * 23 * 10000000) or 46,000,000. Does the government really write a check for $46,000,000 to CBN??? Maybe it's based on deliveries so the payments are received over time - helps with cash flow! :-D.
Remember the numbers for the commemorative 1967 one dollar note. 12000000 printed, plus the regular serial numbered notes. The birds/journey matched serial number sets, 50000 of each. I guess there has to be sufficient numbers to justify the press time.
If there were just one prefix for a commemorative on polymer, that's (.2 * 10000000) or $2,000,000. Could you imagine the backlash from the media, special interest groups, or the general population (bank note collectors excluded) if they found out the two million was spent on a commemorative note. The headline: $2 million on commemorative note that could have been put toward prisons (or whatever the government just hacked to ribbons).
Guess I'm just being a wet blanket...

I can see it now. It's 2022, and the BOC has just announced that they will be releasing for curculation next year, a 25 cent bill commerating the 100'th anniversary of the last shinplaster that was released in 1923.....

At least it's a nice round numbered anniversary, not like these obscure anniversaries like "the 90th anniversary of the striking of the first coins" in 1998.

Maybe in 5 years the Bank of Canada will issue a commerative note to celebrate Canada's 150th birthday. Who knows? Maybe a 2017 150$ bill limited edition. :D

This place is being run as a corporation. The CEO has bonus incentives based on sales which is why they're pushing silly 'rare' and 'collectible' items. Quantity over quality takes presidence. I personally have never bought any thing from them because everything is over priced. Bullion from their store is an excellent example of how overpriced they are.
