Title: Possible Error?
Post by: flyhigh888 on April 28, 2012, 10:38:30 pm
This was an interesting find, it seems the note was printed without the holographic stripe. Look closely at the white area, her hair is still visable. the clear flim is still there, though you may not see it in the scan. Coat of Arms and the "20" on top doesnt have evidence of the holo stripe.

Notes with errors with missing holographic strips do occur however after looking at the scan provided it can be easily determined with the missing ink on the "20" and in the coat of arms that the holographic strip was intentionaly removed by someone in the past. There is an example of this on p.388 in charlton catalogue.
"Holographic strips can be removed from notes. In this case, the overlying printing will also be removed. A genuine missing holographic strip error note will show the coat of arms and denomination, normally superimposed on the strip, printed directly on the paper." So unfortunately you don't have an error note.
Hope this helps

Looking at the coat of arms, you can clearly see the white background, if someone was to intentionally remove it, wouldnt it ruin the fine details of the shield. The overlying printing is still there, look at her hair, its there though small parts are missing. I'll keep it just incase.

I second that opinion.  True, some of the intaglio printing remains, but that's only because some of the ink was selectively scraped off with a key, paper clip, coin or similar object.

If the note was manipulated while in circulation, how would you explain the litho ink still in place on the strip portion of the note?

It is my understanding that if a note has had the holographic strip or the laminate covering the strip removed, it would also remove the ink overlaid on top of the strip, leaving with a white strip with no printing.

I would tend to side that this is an error note.

There is one possibility that I can think of that would make this note not and error note. If the laminate was carefully removed from the note, the holographic strip was removed, and the laminate strip was reattached to the note. It is unlikely of this happening as the laminate strip is very fragile when removed from the note.

I had a similar error $20 a few years ago.  Below is a picture of it for comparison.

JoeF, you have a true error note because notice how no ink is missing along where that strip was.
