Title: My Circulation Finds....
Post by: coinsplus on March 01, 2013, 11:19:03 pm
I received an e-mail earlier this afternoon from a person in charge of the currency cage at a major bank in Vancouver.  He keeps an eye out for coins, etc, but then told me if I was interested in older bills.  I said... "Sure!"  Anyhow, he told me that he has $78 of Canadian notes and coins, but it was primarily notes.  I went to pick up the loot... And I was stunned to see what I got.  Take a look at the photos.  This is my best paper money find ever and all at face value!  All notes range from UNC to GEM UNC in the first photo!  In the coins, got $1 1958 silver dollar (in second photo with some circulated $1 notes).  My only explanation to this... Some executor of an estate (a deceased collector) must have just took them in for deposit without realizing some of the value.

Make sure you spouse knows EXACTLY what the value of your notes!!!... Otherwise, they are sent in for destruction at your local bank branch, orphaned and gone forever.

:D Holy cow! Are you lucky or what!?  I can only expect hassles at my branch and look what you got! Good to know someone is getting decent treatment out there...

There's even a replacement note! (a 2-dollars note)...

Yes, very fortunate of the find by the bank employee.  He obviously does not collect whatsoever.

I was surprised to see the replacement note as well.  It's a common $2 replacement note *B/B Beattie / Rasminsky note, and valued around $30 in UNC.

Nice. I can't see well in the pic... are some of those 1954 dollars H/F's? If that's the case then those are great notes (especially Bouey-Rasminsky) worth a lot more then face value!

Hi JB-2007, you have a sharp eye.

I've finally organized the notes into their currency holders, and examined the prefixes, issue, and value using the Charlton Catalogue.

Yes, I have 9 consecutive and 3 (total 12) all in Gem UNC $1 H/F Beattie/Rasminsky notes.

Also included was a:
$1 V/F Lawson/Bouey note in AU condition;
$2 L/G $2 Bouey / Rasminsky, Gem UNC condition;
$2 *B/B Beattie/Rasminsky in Gem UNC; and,
$5 V/X Bouey / Rasminsky in Gem UNC.

The others are just general, common notes mostly in UNC condition.

All the paper notes combined are worth about $500 in value based on the Charlton Catalogue values.  So not too bad for a $67 paper money face value, and one 1958 silver dollar worth only bullion value ($17).

Not as nice as your find..... but today I was at the banks and picked up these lil gems from being destroyed

'54 $2... V/U 6984154
(3) Centenial $1's
'67 $1 O/O 0340545
'74 $2 AGB 2588411

Love getting these face value..... I know they're not worth much but... it's also nice to know they didn't go to the incinerator..

Nice find Shylo. It is always nice to rescue some old bills. I picked up a couple Birds $20s today in really nice condition. Again, nothing special but nice to find at par.

The best part is the bank usually just asks for face value for these.

You make a good point above about the spouse knowing the value of your notes.  I think this is always worth mentioning to them.  I also have a letter that is very prominent in my collection that details what to do, should I unexpectly go to the light.

A little morbid, but it's better to have a plan.

I completely agree...

Since the birth of my child & the fact that I like to ride my motorbike... I have already put all my financial details in place... I have also told my wife exactly where my collections and valuables are stored and exactly what they're worth...

It is so very important to have these details outlined...

I got a dog-eared Birds $20 the other day & thought I was lucky  :D  Actually, I'm just happy if I don't get a dirty look or escorted out of the bank  ::)  But its good to know there's other collectors recovering good stuff out there (even if its not me  :'(

Crisp $5 journey notes are out in full-force in my area.

In the last week I have been to several branches across my metropolitan region and every branch large to small has given me crisp notes generally in seqeunce. Prefixes I am running into are not new - HAD, HPK, HPS, HPU, HPW (very surprised with HPW), HPN.

I noticed a similar pattern about three months ago at which time I was getting APR, HPD, HPE, HPJ.

I have also noticed that the $20 journeys are not disappearing in any great hurry.

I went to the bank yesterday and the teller gave me the following notes:

1 x 79 $20 Thiessen/Crow
2 x 86 $5 (1 B/T and one T/C)
2 x 89 $10 (1 B/T 1 T/C)

It was nice to see that some tellers are willing to accommodate collectors...

Hi fellow collectors,

My friendly bank teller told me they just got a large deposit of old bank notes.  Here is the stash.   This is the first time I received a 1937 series bank note.   Just paid face value for the notes from an RBC Branch in Vancouver.

Surprisingly, I noticed there were 39 notes of a 1973 $1 notes, that came from a collectors sheet of $1 bills.  They even had the curve from being in the tube.  Someone cut the sheet of notes to deposit them!   Here is the photo of these $1 bills.

I wish the tellers at my bank would save notes for me, too bad they have strict orders to cull anything that is not the latest issue.  :(

But enough about me that is an amazing find coinsplus!  That 1937 note just goes to show you can find anything in circulation!  :D  And its too bad that uncut sheet is now cut up but I'm wondering because you found 39 notes from the sheet.  A sheet consists of 40 so I wonder what happened to that missing note... >:(

Now that is a nice find, I will have to try asking and see what happens

Who ever accumulated those notes must have had an eye for serial numbers, just noticed that above the 1937 $1 there are two $5 and the one has the serial 5211125, and the other while not being anything too special has 1234567 all mixed up, could just be me but I would have saved that sort of thing as well, even is not overly valuable.

Nice find, would love to see more of that sort of thing happen for collectors.

Found a 2-digit radar in Timmy's change today. Unfortunately I would say it grades around an F. Nevertheless, doing some rough math:

There are 630 2-digit radars per prefix and roughly 26 prefixes being reported for polymer 5's (some of which might be short-run, etc.). That means there's approximately 16,380 of these out there (and likely less). I consider that a lucky find.

Rescued these notes from an RBC branch...friendly teller told me they received the notes from a customer for deposit.  FV was $146.

The 1937 $1 would grade G. All those years gone by, and just worth $1 today. Could have done a lot with that dollar back in the 40's.

Here is the latest find from the bank.

It was interesting to see a lot of $20 Lawson/Bouey notes in relatively decent condition.

I love the RCMP $50 notes.

Nice find!  You have recovered quite a few nice notes from the 70's and earlier (from your branches).  They must like you!

These were fairly easy to come by in that grade well beyond the end of that series. It was the easiest signature to find in that series and I even managed to get one from the bank machine in AU grade 20 years after its circulation. Its no real surprise that there are still a fair amount of these notes still circulating today.

@walktothewater:  Yes, lucky to have a few contacts at several branches.   Buying them Starbucks gift cards help, and taking them out during their coffee breaks works, too.

@JB-2007:  Yes, they are still around, but to see so many at once is a surprise.  Having these notes and seeing them altogether in this batch, I felt like I've travelled back in time to the 80's and early 90's.  Brings back a lot of good memories!

Yes finding one or two is not unusual but too see what you got is quite a nice find today in 2015 when these notes with Lawson-Bouey hit circulation back in Dec 1978. 37 years ago!  Too bad they never went much above face in circulated condition.
