Title: Post your new $5 and $10 finds
Post by: tmort on November 06, 2013, 11:56:46 pm
If anyone finds some new polymers tomorrow please post your finds here, so we can what prefixes are up first. 8)

Don't forget to add your notes to the SNDB please!  It should be able to accept the new notes right away.  The only thing the SNDB doesn't capture well will be the signatures, so please post that information here until we can get it narrowed down.

Thanks

Scotiabank's main commercial branch in Vancouver failed me for the first time today - no new notes on the day of issue. They said to try again next week.

I tried another bank, no luck either, but I got a chuckle when the teller asked me "Oh, you mean those new polyamorous bills?"

No luck at my bank today, but the teller said they would be getting the fives next Wednesday and that there would be a bundle of 100 with my name on it!  :)

CIBC's main Toronto branch told me they had them - but they weren't allowed to give them out? (This was at 4:45pm)

Scotiabank said they had some - but none left when I went at 4:50pm.

RBC had nothing.

All in all, a disappointing day.  :-[

M/C $10 FTC 9176932 bp13

They probably were not allowed to give them out yet because the CIBC branch had to clear out the existing supply of Journey $5s and $10s before they start giving out the Polymers.

Scotiabank said they had some - but none left when I went at 4:50pm.

Sounded like the Polymers went like hot cakes at Scotiabank.

RBC had nothing.

All in all, a disappointing day.  :-[

I guess it goes to show how new versions of the smaller denominations are so popular on the first days of issue, so popular, they go like hot cakes.  I'd say, when enough are in circulation, the "going like hot cakes" will fizzle out.

As for Dean's reply about his branch's getting the new $5s next Wednesday, I have a gut feeling that that's an indicator that $10 bills go so slow, and in many banks across the nation, the banks will probably see the new $5's before they see the new $10s.

If only the banks impose limits on how many of the new bills they can give out per customer, that way every customer will have a fair chance to get the new bills.

RBC's Toronto main branch also has them this morning. HBK prefix, Poloz signature.

Managed to get a full BOC bundle - nothing special.

Many banks don't have the $10 (makes sense as they're rarely ordered), but the Scotia machines that stock $10s are already switched over to the polymers.

I've updated the SNDB to accept FEW-FEZ as polymer notes, and I've put in an unconfirmed changeover at HBH for the new signatures.  Official changeover information may take some time to obtain.  The unconfirmed changeover may also shift around as notes are discovered.

Please remember to add your notes to the SNDB and send in scans if requested.  Thanks!

Hmm...last I heard of an ATM spitting out $10's was TD back in the Birds issue days.  Was the same era when RBC machines gave out $5's.

I wasn't even aware Scotia still gave out $10's.  My wife is with Scotia and I'm not sure even she's aware.

Not all Scotia machines have $10s. In fact - the only Scotia machines I know of that have $10s are the ones located in the concourse/lobby of the main Toronto branch. They have a few machines which only dispense $10/$50 notes, the others are $10/$20.

When you take out $800 from the latter ones, you get 30x$20 and 20x$10 notes!

Some more hunting of the downtown bank branches turned up FEY $10s, HBH and HBL $5s (both M/P). Will enter them now.

For what it's worth, I got an FEW $10 in my change from a local supermarket.  The cashier admitted he was quite shocked they appeared this soon. I Did happen to submit it to the SNDB (my first time!) with images to prove it.

Now the countdown is on to the day I finally see a Polymer $5 bill.

That's basically the reponse I got from a couple TD branches here in Mtl.

Not surprising, considering last year it took me about 3 weeks from release to see a polymer $20 from an ATM.

I believe that this is the same as what one would expect in the 20 polymers of the FS- type. I think someone had determined that they were skip 200.

so

4494138 would belong to the range 4494000 to 4494199 (37/37)
4494338 would belong to the range 4494200 to 4494399 (38/38)
4495938 would belong to the range 4495800 to 4495999 (27/27)

and so on

Got some new 5$ (and forgot to get some 10$ like a dork but you will see why when I explain).  Teller puts the notes on the desk and I see a poloz signature then when he lifts them up to count I see HBG which put a smile on my face since I didn't expect that.  I totally forgot to ask about 10$ notes because I was so focused on a possible changeover on 5$ notes.  Changeover must be in HBG it seems.  I'll post a pic once I find batteries for my camera and should I enter them in the SNDB now or wait until the changeover is changed?

I noticed this new trend with the front and back plate numbers when I got my first Polymer $10 bill today, and it turns out that both those numbers are identical now.  Makes me wonder if it has to do with the BoC relying on only one printer (CBN), since BABN withdrew from printing banknotes indefinitely?

The FPN and BPN match for all polymer notes, without exception.  This is not new with the $5s and $10s.  Even BAI $20s and $50s follow this rule.

Here are the scans for the two polymer $10 bills which were picked up for the TD bank in downtown Ottawa at 12:30 pm.  I may have typed in the plates numbers to be 13 as I was working from my Blackberry.  They are definintely plate number 12 on the front and back of these bills.

Stopped in at a local BMO and they said the new notes just came in this morning.

Picked up 7 consecutive FEY M/C $10s and 14 HBK M/P $5s (779005 - 7790020) that included a new low for the HBK and weren't all consecutive.  Both had the same F/P and B/P numbers (28).

Missing 10 and 16 in the range of $5s for some reason.

You are correct about that at the time you posted.  I just checked the SNDB and now it appears there is another note entered in 5$ M/C polymer which is higher than BWJM's note but less than the 5000000 unconfirmed changeover.  I wonder if it is a M/C or a M/P?

Very cool, I understand why getting them wrapped up would be better...
I picked up a couple bundles today and they are not sequential, somebody has been through them already!

I can spend my way out of what I picked up today after I look through them, but a brick, that would take a while.
The bank would loose patience with me if I returned that much cash.
Seems bricks are out of my league, but I am looking forward to entering my first notes into the SNDB :)

Impressive. First time I have seen bricks in this manner. Thx for sharing.

I must say however after looking at the picture, I do not understand how notes in the bricks would necessarily be that much different in grade than notes in individual untouched bundles. It seems to me that the corners and edges can easily get affected in the  bundles no matter where they are located within the bundle.

The other thing is that the straps on individual bundles do not have the CBN logo and are wider. Do they have the Bank of Canada logo?

Noticing the serial number on the $5 note it seems that they are not in the standard sequence in the bundle that is seen with the serial number in the picture.

Picked up these two groups of notes the past 2 days:-

   HBG 7352622 - 625    17 17
   HBG 7352860 - 888    18 18

Notice the Position Nos. must have switched between note 625 & 860, which is only 235 notes apart.
Wonder what the exact changeover would that be.
Title: Re: Post your new $5 and $10 finds

The new notes are believed to be skip-numbered by 200, so the likely change is 799 / 800.

Tip to all: if you get a run of sequential notes, watch the position numbers because they may change within your run.  If they do, consider each set of notes as a separate run and enter the high and low from each run into the SNDB.

Found my first Radar!

Also the plate (or is this the position) number changed on the 5's

There were lots of missing numbers in the bundle, 15 sequential then a note missing, then 15 more and another missing.
Other than that I really don't know what I should be looking for when I search.

Yes, you need to watch those position numbers.  They will change frequently (i.e. every 200 notes), so check your sequential runs.

Why are the position numbers important to a collector? Is there some info I should be reading to get a better understanding of this?
Thanks

Generally speaking, they're not important to a collector.

To a numismatist, particularly one who researches printing and numbering methods, knowing the position numbers helps them first figure out the layout of the sheets, then where on that sheet any particular note comes from.

newbie here, referred to your site from CCF, had no idea your site existed, looks great! I've collected paper money since the 70's, never too seriously.

Last week I picked up a brick of polymer fives from RBC in Montreal and was thrilled to find 2 radars, a 3 digit and a 4 digit. A little voice in my head told me to record the serial numbers before returning them to the bank the next day (teller was not happy, takes about ten minutes to return a brick).  Unfortunately I failed to record the FP and RP numbers, which I see from this thread are useful to know, sorry! Since I kept 9 bills for my collection I have a few plate numbers.

The whole brick was HBP (plus I pulled a nice HBG7735777 FP35 RP35 a few days earlier). All of it Macklem/Poloz. Five notes in the brick were...what do you call them? position numbers? I thought they were replacement notes, what's the difference?

Anyway I'll gladly share my SN's with you but I can't find this SNDB of yours, where is it hidden?

Hi Bricker,

Lots of great collectors/researchers here.   So, I am sure you will get to know other members here.

Enjoy and happy hunting!

Greetings!

I am FrontierMountie, call me Mountie if you wish, I am a new member to the forums  :)

About 2 or 3 weeks ago, I picked up 2 new HBH notes and 1 new FTD note from the bank, which I brought home and recorded in the SNDB. A week ago, in my change, there were about  3 or 4 new 5 dollar notes, and 2 new 10 dollar notes, which I forgot to bring home and put in the SNDB  :( I kept one though, since it looked special. It was HBH 9946699, FPN and BPN 49. A new high for the SNDB! Also, I have a few questions to ask. Do trinary notes have any value? Also, am I able to enter old Bird Series or Multicolored Series in the SNDB?

Thanks! -FrontierMountie

What exactly is your definition of a trinary? I assume only 0,1, and 2's?
If so 2001002, 1002001, 0000112, 0000102.......for example would all have extra value beyond FV   :)

No. But there is a note registry for certain scarce prefixes in those two series. See note registry for more detail.

My definition of a trinary would be any 3 numbers (i.e. 9946699). Sort of like a binary, but with 3 numbers of any sort.

I'd say face value only.

I would agree FV only

Ok then. I'll just keep on passing along my so called "trinary" notes, since they're only FV. Thanks for your input guys.

One of my Bird notes, a $10 Bonin-Thiessen "BDH" Prefix Changeover in AU condition is only what I want to enter in the SNDB. Though I don't think the "BDH" Prefix is that scarce. I'll check the registry. Thanks.

There is no registry for BDH as we all know the changeover point and how many were printed. The point of the note registry is to collect as many numbers as possible on prefix where changeover and qty printed are all not known. For example in the birds series you have all the AUG-AUN notes

I think at this point it's safe to close this thread... The SNDB accepts all of the new polymer $5 and $10 notes, and there's really only one unknown: the M/C to M/P changeover.

So if you find any Macklem/Carney notes and want to brag about your luck, please create a thread for it.  Otherwise, for the rest of the new notes, please use the SNDB.  Thanks!
