At a recent collectibles show I came across five obsolete US Banknotes, each of which had been completely encapsulated in lucite blocks of thickness 7 mm. Probably against my better judgment, I purchased the lot of five notes for the asking price of $220. The notes probably graded EF/AU before being encapsulated but some now display a bit of wrinkling that I didn’t notice at the show.
Has anyone ever come across this type of thing before?! I presume they were used in some sort of numismatic display, perhaps in a bank or museum(?) It’s obviously impossible to remove the notes but they do have a certain charm about them. I probably bought a pig in a poke but I think there may be a story to be told.
