Title: 1979 $5 - New Registry Find
Post by: koremore on March 08, 2018, 08:07:06 pm
Hello friends.  Long time user, very infrequent poster.

Please see image of new 1979 $5 that I found.  This is not in the 3rd edition of the Note Registry (2016).
I would grade this note as EF.  Any idea what it could fetch?  Said another way, does the Charlton accurately reflect market value in everyone's opinion for these notes?

Thank you.

Title: Re: 1979 "33" $5 Test Note - New Registry Find
Post by: koremore on March 11, 2018, 02:52:11 pm
I note the CGPM 30th Edition 2018 lists "47" of these Test Notes recorded to date (bottom of page 296.)

However, when I reference the CPMS Note Registry (2016) I manually count 46.

So it's either a typo and there is 47 + my new find = 48
Or (I think more likely) there was 46 + my new find = 47.  If it's the 2nd case, it would appear the typo has corrected itself with my find.

Note also though a 2nd typo:  The Charlton, also on page 296, claims the high number seen to date for the 33 Test Notes = 33000469863, when in fact the Note Registry lists a known note with a serial number = 33000473096 (a higher number.)

So in summary I'm pretty certain about the 2nd point above (high number seen to date) being a typo, less so about the first point.

I welcome any input and discussion.
Thank you.

As if this wasn't interesting enough to me, there is an additional note currently listed on Ebay bearing serial #
33000133124

So that's either 46 + 2 new = 48 OR
47 + 2 new = 49.

Interesting times we're in!
Cheers.

At the moment there are 49 on the Registry master list, which is updated constantly.
There is a simple explanation for the "discrepancy" reported in this thread.
The Charlton census figures were obtained from the master list, as it stood at the time.
The published version of the CPMS Registry was last updated in early 2016.
The 30th edition GPM was completed in the late summer of 2017, leaving a year and a half roughly for additional notes to be recorded.
Such a note was 33000133124 mentioned below, which was in the Coin Expo sale, April 2016 - too late for the Registry but in lots of time for the catalogue.
Other recent additions have come from the 2017 Coin Expo (Bell) sale (33000253751) and of course 33000466746 from this very Forum, both of which were seen too late for the 31st edition.
The new high number was missed and will be forwarded to Charlton Press for the 31st.
I anticipate the 4th ed. Registry should come out in approximately one year, as we have been doing triennial updates.

Sorry - I made a TYPO
I meant ……….both of which were seen too late for the 30th edition.

Thanks for the reply!

I'm actually quite excited to (for once) be on the "cutting edge" of discovery.  It's all clear now, thanks.

Any comments on the market for these notes?  Curious as to how it has been trending as of late, and would like an opinion on the value of my note, again EF.  Although, I think this one is going to stay in the collection.

And it is reasonable to think that as more of these hit the market, the rarity in turn decreases somewhat, therefore prices head south?

Thanks once more!

Best,
koremore

Yes, numismatics is more fun if you are actively involved on the knowledge front and not just collecting passively.
My perception is that the market is soft for these notes at present.
The addition of a few more notes to the registry shouldn't make much difference to valuations, in my view.
What will really drive things is a few new eager collectors coming on board to absorb the available examples.
I think is safe to say these test notes will always be scarce and pricey.

Hello.

I note eBay currently lists two additional 1979 $5 test notes, with serial numbers:

33000173838 and
33000186054

Both of these are not listed in the 3rd edition CPMS note registry.  I wish to report them here, for inclusion.  I do grant that they may already be included and I am just unaware.

Thank you kindly.
