Title: Toronto Merchant Script
Post by: rarecoins2001 on May 05, 2019, 04:20:39 pm
I found some info on this business but I cannot find this note listed anywhere.  Anyone have a book that lists it?

It's not merchant scrip, it's an advertising note.
There is no book for advertising notes at this time.

I thought if it has a value it is considered Merchant script?

If you read the text carefully, you will see that it isn't redeemable for anything.
If the customer gives them $5, they will receive various goods.
It's deceptive and it was meant to be, so people would take notice of it and perhaps even think of this little scrap of advertising as something of value.
It does indeed have value now, over a century later — to a collector.

Had me fooled too.  One three letter word changes the whole meaning.

Had me fooled as well as everyone at the Toronto Coin club the other day.
