Title: Let's see your sets!
Post by: AL-Bob on December 06, 2019, 01:45:59 pm
Thought we should start a new let's see your sets thread...

Compare both the prefixes and serial numbers:

-very nice Wagnert

Special Serial number collecting came late to me so I don't have that many sets to speak of.  I do have a few but most aren't scanned.  Here's a couple pairs of Journey radars:

Here's a couple recent sets I found from searching bundles of the "150" Commemorative Tens.

Nice CDD notes but where is the radar?  And the 3-cycle note?  Hope you didn't spend them...

I am thinking radars may get pulled out of bundles by the Bank of Canada due to the history of people hoarding them, when money is intended to be spent.

It seems like the practice of hoarding money tends to hurt the economy, and the Bank of Canada is trying to get people to spend the money.

I wonder if the first supply of 2018 $10 bills printed had smaller ranges of prefixes despite there being seven different prefixes among roughly 19 million of the bills printed, because of radars and special serial numbers being pulled in order to combat hoarding?

Either way, if the new $10s are hard to come by, that's going to prompt people to hoard whatever tens they come across, no matter what serial number or any feature.  But then again, if they decide to retire the $10 bill down the road (due to the number of bank orders being gravely low), legal tender status will likely be dropped a year afterwards, and they will lose face value, prompting Canadians to bring them to the bank and exchange them for two $5s or deposit them.

Complete nonsense.  All that "hoarding" money does is increase the value of everyone else's money slightly.  It basically means that you are working for free, producing valuable goods and services for others to enjoy in exchange for essentially nothing (what's the production cost of a $10 bill?).  The Bank of Canada should be more than overjoyed to sell their polymer which costs only a few cents to produce in exchange for $5, $10, $20 (...) worth of actual stuff.

As far as radars are concerned that is such a minuscule and irrelevant part of the economy that surely it isn't even on B of C's radar (pardon the pun) regardless of what kind of economic fallacies the directors might be trying to promote at one particular moment.

CDD notes but where is the radar
-sadly, there was no radar (just a repeater).  Can't remember whether the numbers ran the wrong way (in other words the radar was beyond my bundle/s) or whether it was simply missing.  Often large runs of SN would just be missing so SN jumped all over the place.  Quite honestly, it happened far too often too (so radars were tough to find).

Complete nonsense.
- I agree.  The BOC and the money distributors have No agenda.  They simply just distribute the stuff.  In the past, notes that were missing had runs from another prefix dumped in their place (& hence we got the term "insert replacements")  Not anymore.  Now if banknotes are found to be outside the acceptable parameters of what's normal- they're simply trashed & no replacements are put in their place (only more printed).  That was why there were 6 prefixes for 50 M "150" Commemorative $10.

Uncirculated 2017 & 2018 $10 edition radars are semi scarce and  typically sell for a premium and circulated ones do well also whenever they are offered.  Two main reasons I suspect: few bundle searchers left and the serials are mixed up with only small consecutive runs.  I know I did not find any when I looked through some bundles.  There are the odd radars found so I am doubtful they are pulling them.  Just my experiences.
Title: Re: Let's see your sets!
Post by: friedsquid on December 17, 2019, 10:39:49 pm
The BOC is not pulling radars or for that matter
Any other special numbers with the odd exceptions
Of notes for special reasons
I do know for a fact that there are bank tellers
Still pulling special numbers as well as security
Armoured guards and casino employees that pull numbers as I deal with a number
of them on a regular basis
In most cases the simple fact is  that most bundles within bricks are
Mixed and they are not as easily found as they
once were
On the flip side I have got bricks with multiple radars
As well as bricks with no radars
In fact in one brick alone I have had 9 radars
The more you go through the better your odds
Never stop searching they are out there

Now that's a keeper if I do say so!

I agree with above comments that the BoC doesn't really care whether or not there are money collectors when it comes to bill distribution. For one, wagnert & I each found a 5 solid this year (and I'm sure there are more collectors that haven't posted on our forums) and as a side note the very first batch of 2018 10s I ever came across was a short run of 12 sequential that included a radar smack dab in the middle.

I've put a few of these rollover sets back together but this is the only one I've found where both digits of the prefix rolled over.

Philippe_B, do you know anything about the history of those notes (how they were obtained)?
Title: Re: Let's see your sets!

These notes were found by a guy that I know who used to work for a company like Garda in the 90s. He used to pick up notes in brand new bundles from time to time. He put note 0 and 1 in a safety deposit box. He also kept notes 2 to 9 at home and he got robbed. He did not realise what he had found until he told me what he owned in 2008 and I told him that what he had was extraordinary. He gave the contrat to find a buyer.

Interesting story and history!  Can we assume the robbers did not know the notes true value and spent them but if they ever show up for sale in unc then we will know they were collector thief's  8).

Wow it's quite a luck that your friend had the idea to stash those two notes away.  At least with the 0 and the 1 the 0 looks a little less suspicious than it would on it's own.  My first thought was did it escape from the Bank of Canada museum or was it meant to be a specimen or something.  The number 1 note suggests that it was released as part of a regular issue and your story backs that up.

I would agree that any random robber would probably just spend the other notes.  Being too recent to stand out as anything special, even if the thief did notice the serial numbers they almost certainly would just try to get rid of the notes as quickly and discretely as possible and certainly not flash them around town trying to find a collector to buy them.  Probably just gave them to his dealer to buy his next rock.

It’s unfortunate that the little amount of space the few extra notes
Would have taken that they weren’t put in the box as well.
