Wonder if we might have a thread for posting the price we paid or sold a note for? As Archey asked, what was his low #'d set worth, various opinions surfaced.Yet,we see over and over prices realized for notes as FAR FAR different from the Charlton Paper Money Catalogue.
I personally have paid substantially under book for several note because of time of year, ect, and I have paid enormous premiums for Uncirculated and Uncommon (in my opinion) notes.
The purpose would not be to debate trends,guides,under-valued,or over priced, rather to post prices realized, bought or sold.
Wouldn't this be a way to keep up with what's going on in the buy/sell community from fellow collectors, traders, dealers, and fanatics ;) ?
For instance, many post ebay sale prices here.I posted that I sold a 1954 *AM Replacement for $650. The pair of 1954 solid 5's and 6's with same sig and S/N went for $1600.00 buy it now.
Over priced or under-valued,that would not be the focus, just a place to report.
A thread to see what's happening for those who care to report.I think this could be very useful in helping us all, when considering a note to purchase.
-
I think thats a great idea
Myself I am a Royal Bank collector and see myself paying premiums on most of my notes.
Before the 5th edition book I was paying 1400 for a VF/EF Batleship note and will continue to do so
I also recently purchased a Royal Bank $5 Trinidad note from 1938 in aFine. Books at 400 and paid 900. It does sound like a lot but in the long run paying these prices will protect my investment and others as well.
On the other end of the spectrum I paid 750 for a 1924 Bank of NS in UNC wich now books at 1500
-
Fantastic kid_kc79!!
Now we know a recent price on a battleship note and a RB Trinidad note.As the point is not to debate prices,i WILL REFRAIN from comment, but thank you for the info.May be useful for a future purchase.
Here's another-My wife paid approx $13,000 for a GEM UNC 65 1935 $1000.00 about 9 months ago.She just sold it for $16,000.00 last week.
Hope that helps someone.
-
With 700 members, only kc and I are interested in a thread that keeps members/lurkers up to date on what someone is currently paying for notes?
I find that truly amazing? :o :-? :(
BTW,just bought a BC-63c $10 BET 0254717 W.P. Jenkins / D.A. Dodge UNC $75.00
Not in my possession yet but soon will be!
-
Sounds good. Count me in.
-
I just paid $1000.00 for a 1986 GOV insert in UNC.
-
and a 1969 *YA in AU for 175.00
-
I guess alot of us are embarassed to admit how much they actually paid for their notes :-X
-
okay I will admit one. i paid recently $415 for a 3-digit radar on a 1937 $20 coyne in VF. :-/
-
paid 160 for a 1937 2 digit radar C/T VF last year
-
stevepot99 "paid 160 for a 1937 2 digit radar C/T VF last year "
Hello stevepot99,thanks for giving us all your purchase for the C/T radar.
I think we need to keep this thread,if implemented, to the current calender year. The idea being a current Trends of sorts.Although not precise,or the pulse of the over-all market,it does give buyers and sellers a idea of any given note that praticular day.
Again, one of the rules would be no commenting on prices, good or bad.Not to replace the Charlton, which could not and should not be done imo,yet a place to record the "NOW' of the market place.
-
I wonder how the moderators feel about this idea? Or are they awaiting the pleassure of the forum members before expressing an opinion?
-
Sold a 2-digit radar 1954 $2 Lawson in Fine or aboutFine for $97 last week.
-
Holy Crap! ;) Just bought what the seller describes as Unc Coyne Towers 1937 $20.00 for Buy It Now $112.00cnd
Here's part of the description on e-bay:"I believe the note will grade a conservative, crisp choice uncirculated condition, mint state-63/64."
I looooooooooooooove the summer months!
-
why yes that is the note
-
and I have bought other notes from that seller and would recommend him as one of the best
-
I bought a 1937 $2.00 L/R (short prefix) in AU ++ (small barely perceptable vertical indentations) for $180 in Paris
-
Just purchased a very low mintage #*N/S in UNC condition for $990.00 cnd.
-
I Question if this thread is a good idea but I will throw this one out anyways.... ::)
I Paid $322 for a single High Range HOG Insert!!!! :o :-[
-
A few years ago i paid $250 for an EDX crow-bouey $10 Steel-engraved. It was only in F-VF at best but it was the only one such note i have ever seen. Above the catalogue price but was worth it i think. You rarely see this variety.
-
Hey JB,we all appreciate you telling us what you paid for that note "A few years ago ",and yet the idea is to have a place to post what we paid for notes in the calender year we are posting.
Heck I can tell you about some pretty rare stuff i bought 10-15 years ago, problem is it doesn't help out the buyer/seller presently. That's the idea of my starting this :)
A few others seem to have forgot,or not realized that we are to keep our personal comments regards price, whether too high or low to ourselves. This is to be a place for all to post 2006 prices, next year a place to post 2007 prices, ect.
A current Trends if you will :D
With that said,today I purchased:
1) *NY Unc @ $1200.00
2) 1937 $50 C/T Unc @ 1150.00
3) 1954 $1.00 *OY @ $240.00
4)1935 Gem Unc $2.00 @ 1950.00
5)1954 *AY Gem Unc @ 200.00
-

I don't think this was specified in the first posting.
-
From the first post: "The purpose would not be to debate trends,guides,under-valued,or over priced, rather to post prices realized, bought or sold."
And my second,the threads 3rd:
"As the point is not to debate prices,i WILL REFRAIN from comment, but thank you for the info.May be useful for a future purchase."
My third post:
"With 700 members, only kc and I are interested in a thread that keeps members/lurkers up to date on what someone is currently paying for notes?"
Yeah it kinda evolved :).Point being,I diidnt want to turn a useful tool into some slam fest about buyers, sellers or you paid too much, ect.Really think this could be helpful to the community, but if the Moderators see we can't post our buy sells as information only i can understand the reasons to not allow this to continue(I may be reading too much into it?)
-
Just bought this one
Pd $ 415.00
19th edition $ 450
Two very very light counting creases probably something
like an UNC60 if we're talking the new system being talked about.

About one and half year ago, I purchased a UNC BEK 2003 10$ note for 40$. I jumped when I saw the price in the latest Charlton's: 250$. The seller told me that it would be a good one...
-
Bought a Unc BET 5555555 for $412.00 several months back.
-
Not possible! BET only goes to 0919999.
-
I think he means BEK5555555 ;)
-
Yep,shoulda' K'd when I T'd.
BEK5555555
-
BEK5555555
That is a REALLY nice note!!!! Congrats! 8-)
-
Holy poop! Just bought what the seller describes as Unc Coyne Towers 1937 $20.00 for Buy It Now $112.00cnd
Here's part of the description on e-bay:"I believe the note will grade a conservative, crisp choice uncirculated condition, mint state-63/64."
I looooooooooooooove the summer months!
Just received the note today, great packaging ,came from Lincoln NE in great shape, the note is totally original, lots of embossing ect...
Imagine my surprise when the post office tells me I owe $20.00 in Customs fees! >:( :-?
So almost 20% in fees for the declared value!! :o
Sure I received a great deal but it was diminished by 20%,thanks GOC.
As I am not in the habit of buying notes from US dealers this was quite a surprise. With the Heritage Auction coming up,Canadian bidders need to be aware of these additional fees/costs that will need to be added to the final buy price.
With a lot of rarer notes up for sale at this particular auction those fees could be substantial.
Sure gives me pause when i had the desire to bid on a few rarer notes, worth over $10,000 each.Jeez, the customs fees could be in the thousands! >:( >:( >:( Thanks again GOC!!
-
Just have the notes sent by regular mail. Only slightly risky but if it's regular mail, no one thinks there's anything special in the envelope, including customs folk... I've never had anything lost (knock on woody head) and saved plenty
-
The 1937 $ 1 W/N I posted in this thread came from California. I never had to pay anything. I guess the seller declared it.
-
$ 20 Devil Face Beattie Coyne B/E type
A nice Ebay deal. $ 170 USD
One very small counting flick
Super embossing
So what does this make it UNC63

I'm surprised you are surprised.
The 1937 $ 1 W/N I posted in this thread came from California. I never had to pay anything. I guess the seller declared it.
NOT necessarily. Its just luck of the draw. I bought a $5 DF and had it sent regular postage (from a collector/Dealer-- but not identified) and paid no duties, but then bought a 1917 $1 from a dealer which was put into a small parcel and sent special delivery. The problem was that it took about a month (or more) for the DF to arrive and I swore I wasn't going to go through a long spell of chewing my nails to see if my note was going to make it or not. So I bit the bullet and paid the extra for postage-- and then yes got stung with custom fees. It was $15 or more and made my note more than book. I think its the last note I bought from the states. I generally do not bid on auctions from the US and it drives me crazy because I know that a lot of Canadian eBayers are also turned off, and there can be some genuine great deals, due to the higher risk factor/duty turn off.
The same for my brother's "Cornered" cartoon books . His books are printed in the US and I'll usually order about 10 for Xmas gifts. Sometimes I'll get charged duties, other times, they arrive with none. When duties are applied its just like paying what you pay at a store. If no duties than you get a good break on the bulk order.

I'm surprised you are surprised.
:-? I made it very clear when i stated " As I am not in the habit of buying notes from US dealers this was quite a surprise."
You're surprised I'm surprised i was charged 20% duties on a $100.00 purchase? Now I'm surprised.
The point of the post was to let unaware collectors know they may be in for quite a shock once they add in all fees paid for a note from US dealers.Especially with higher priced notes, many rare notes are for sale with the Heritage Auction taking place. This can add significant percentages to final costs.
Secondary to the above, was to stimulate responses in ways which are legal and could avoid such charges,if there are any.
I'm surprised you are surprised
What am i missing with that response?

That seems like a great idea for notes of lesser value.Any ideas on notes over $1000 cnd? If percentages stay the same we would be looking at approx. $200 in duties ?Ouch!
-
I do it with high-value notes, too. Same principles apply....
-
I'm not surprised. If I recall correctly Customs will bill you the same GST and PST you would pay in Canada plus a $5 service charge. What service? - calculating the tax, of course.
-
purchased a BC-53aA in "gem unc" at a show in Winnipeg - 31001696674. i wish i could report that i obtained a susbtantial discount from the current (19th ed.) trends. i paid $450.
-
I like this thread, it interesting to see what people are buying and the prices realized. Hence I will contribute some recent purchases. Allfrom scowering EBay
BC-30b - I/B Prefix
Can't find too much wrong with this note. AU-UNC except it's not ripply like the Devil's usually are. I doubt it's been "pressed" in a bad way. Maybe kept in a book under heavy weight.
Paid $ 120
Book $ 180AU-$350UNC
-
Another short prefix Devil
BC-33b - E/E Prefix
Was supposed to be EF-AU, but it is a pressed EF
Paid $ 120
Book $ 90
:-?
-
This is my first replacement from this issue
BC-48aA
One corner with a teeny bend very close to the edge. Maybe about 2MM long
Otherwise UNC. So I guess in the new way UNC 60-63
Paid $ 135
Book $ 175
-
Another short prefix Devil
BC-33b - E/E Prefix
Was supposed to be EF-AU, but it is a pressed EF
Paid $ 120
Book $ 90
Looks AU to me. :-/ Lets hope they go up in value so you dont lose money.
-
I'm sure some of you may have seen this note. You don't see a great deal of these types of errors from the 1937 Series
BC-25c Prefix H/E ( changeover )
You can see the next note
-
An I can check another 1923 $ 1 type off my list with this one.
DC-25g Red Seal
A little better than VF Maybe VF25-30
The scan does not do it justice. It's a cleaner looking note in hand.
Paid $ 98
Book $ 80VF-225EF. So maybe $ 125-150 for this piece
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
Lastly another 1923 $ 1
The second easiest type to get
DC-25n
I think this note often sells below book
basically one crease down the middle. Otherwise close to UNC
I call it EF-45 or EF-AU
Again the scan does no justice, it looks nicer
Paid $ 135
Book $ EF $ 185 - AU $ 340

Purchased two-yikes 2-1954 *HF B/R $1's for $1000.each.Both consec,and Choice Original Uncirculated,no counting creases,strong embossing,mucho planchettes ect.
Also a 1954 *NX with excellent centering and all the above.Same price,$1000.
A small benefit, and i do mean small ;D, is the fact i will be eating PCD on Al. ;)
Must say,he is great to deal with,known Al many years,perhaps 8,from the old New West days.;
Wife's on the prowl :-/ (for notes that is ),will keep you posted.
-
Purchased a DC 22a-i (I think) for $25.00 at a shop in Winnipeg. Note is nicer than scan and nicer than most of the current Journey 5s in my pocket. There is writing on the back but it's still a pleasing note. I would grade it as a G notwithstanding the two tears and the writing.

-
Just sold my 1954 $1.00 Uncirculated *V/V for $13,500.
It was open to offers, that was the final selling price.

At the Coquitlam show this past Sunday I bought 2 Consecutive 1937 Original Unc $100's with the G/T sigs for $2200.00 canadian.
As a side note,Joe announced to all via microphone that he would no longer be running the shows as it had becoame uneconomical as the hotel was upping the rates per table, rising costs ect.He received a round of applause for all his efforts.
Hope the show finds a successor.
-
My wife recently bought 2 1935 $2.00 notes in Original Uncirculated condition. The notes were consecutive, superb, excellent centering, real trophy notes, given the condition.
I believe she received quite a bargain-$3650 canadian.
-
Serial number of the 1954 $1.00 *VV Note that I just sold for $13,500 canadian is *V/V 5503999
Regards,Robert.
-
Forgot to mention,recently bought 2 consecutive *RR 1954 $2's for,I believe,$1800.00
They were advertised by a member here at the Forum.
Notes were/are fantastic!
Say,either I'm the only one buying and selling,or this is one heck of an unpopular thread! ;) :(
Nothing to hide here,lol! ;)
-
To make it easier for future buyers/sellers
A 1937 Uncirculated Osbourne/Towers $50.00 note just sold on e-bay for Approximately C $20,144.34.
Unfortunately,it wasn't me :-/
Thanks for pointing that out Archey!
-
You need to add that it was a Osborne note ;)

LOL..Now that's juice!!
The 1935 $50 in described Gem Unc just sold for $19,000 usd.
I was outbid by a measly $100 bucks >:(
-
We just won a pair of 1935 $2's in consec. unc for a little over $5000.cnd.Quite a premium over the last pair.
If no one wants to participate with a place for buy/sells,neither will I .
Too bad,a shame really.Could have been an up to date trends and a place to reference your buy/sells.
majority rules .
in the future :-X
-
The high bidders on the Gem Unc $50 1935 and the Choice Unc $50 1937 Osborne would be providing a great service if they would submit a "condition report" after receiving their notes. Was the Gem Unc $50 1935 note really 100% flawless? Did the Choice Unc $50 1937 note have a few traces of handling?? -- presumably it did otherwise it too would have been graded as Gem rather than as Choice??
More to the point, perhaps, did the high bidders decide to keep their notes after receiving them and inspecting them?
The high bidders should be congratulated for expressing such strong confidence in the Canadian paper money market via their impressive bids! I hope they will be very happy with their new acquisitions.
-
I just recently purchased an Unc 1975 $100 2 digit radar/rotator. I think I did well for $400.
By the way, does anyone know if the next Charlton will have prices for earlier series rotators?

Picked up a few changeovers the last few days... I know these have been selling all over the map so I hope this helps out anyone buying or selling:
HOH (2004) UNC: four consecutive for $23 each
Book: $40
H/M (Beattie Rasminsky) UNC (haven't examined them yet though): also four consecutive for $23 each
Book: $50
V/F (Lawson Bouey) AU, listed as Unc: $64
Book: $50-80
E/R (Non-Test) AU, listed as Unc: Nine consecutive for $10 each
Book: Unlisted ($7-$12 for regular prefix)
Also saw two consecutive ALM lawson bouey (AU/Unc) hidden in the middle of a bulk lot ten of 73's. Apparently I wasn't the only one who noticed, though, since the lot got bid up to $480 in the last 15 seconds (not by me though). :-/
Book: $200-350
happy holidays! [smiley=beer.gif]

We just won a pair of 1935 $2's in consec. unc for a little over $5000.cnd. Quite a premium over the last pair.
Did the consecutive $2 1935 notes turn out to be original Gem Uncs, as they were purported to be in the ebay description, or had they been pressed like that expensive "Choice Unc" $50 1937 Osborne from the same seller? Many thanks.

Well, these were not mine but to up-date the community
VNS Show-Auction by C&P Numismatic prices include fees and taxes(these are estimates but are fairly close,as location of buyer can affect final value)
1954 Devils Face Specimen $1000 Unc-$12,513.00--- Charlton 19th book value $5000.00
1954 $1.00 Beattie/Rasminsky *NY Unc-$1741.00 ----Charlton 19th book value $1200.00
1935 French $50.00 EF-$11,500.00---- Charlton 19th book value $9000.00
1937 $1.00 Narrow Panel J/A Unc-$5250.00 --- Charlton 19th book value $2200.00
1937 $2.00 Osbourne/Towers Unc- $2193.00-- - Charlton 19th book value $$1150.00
(please note my scribbling on this one is not precise-15% may be added twice-not sure)
1937 Osbourne/Towers $100.00 Unc-$6579.00 --- Charlton 19th book value $4250.00
1973 $1.00 Lawson/Bouey 01 Low # Unc-$1677.00--- Charlton 19th book value $1100.00
(This is the only note from the above that I personally won)
Forgot a couple that I paid attention too:
BC21d 1937 $1.00 CCGS63 2 Notes Unc--$225.00 Charlton 19th book value $140.00 (2 notes)
BC21d 1937 $1.00 CCGS63 2 Notes UNC--$225.00 Charlton 19th book value $140,00 (2 notes)
I noted Chartered note prices seemed weak, and not a lot of bidding. That is my perception but I didn't follow that part of the auction extensively
-
I got AOL2988892 a nice Radar today when I went to get lunch ;D EF

Recently purchased a very nice 1913 Royal Bank $20 in VF+. The note was auctioned on ebay in Mid March and I got it for $2050. I am very pleased with this purchase and this will make a superb adition to my collection.
I am very interested in knowing if anyone has ever come accross an UNC or AU of this note? The best I have ever seen is possibly a VF35 or EF40
I will try to post the scans if anyone is interested in seing it. It may take a little while as I have been having problems with my FTP server lately.

bought a 0000001 1954 $5.00 for just over $1200.cnd

bought a 0000001 1954 $5.00 for just over $1200.cnd
Good buy! Do you have a picture for us to enjoy?

Just acquired a 1935 $1 English with serial number A0000008 in Unc. I paid well over book, but how
often do you see a 1935 bank note with a serial number less than 10 for sale. The number 8 will have
some special interest to an Asian paper money collector.

Think according to my Grade 6 math there couldn't have been more than 9 of these printed in total, given the prefix, this is probably the only one around. Dunno. It's a nice original Unc. I like it.

I paid 25% over book at Torex today for the following set of notes from Don Olmstead. I was content in paying
that price since the notes are totally original, grade CUnc to GUnc and they are all solid 7s, one of the more
desirable solid numbers.
These go well with my 1954 $50 solid 7s.

...... and they are all solid 7s, one of the more desirable solid numbers.
Very interesting, some of the 7777777 serial numbers have Curved-Stem 7's while others have Straight-Stem 7's. Have these font variations on the 1954 Series been reported and/or studied before?
By the way, you could refer to these 7777777 notes as "Super Sevens" as there are SEVEN 7's on each note!
-
The straight stems on the "7s" is a feature of notes printed by CBN while the curved stems only appear on
notes printed by BABN.

Many thanks. I should have noticed that myself after so many decades of collecting!

Hey Arthur,
Nice job with the G/W 7's! That's the last solid numbered $20 1954 note! Good luck finding the $100 now. I sadly doubt even you'll be able to complete the set by acquiring the $1000 though :-\.

Yep, definitely worth the price. But I still managed to get my solid 9's for a little under-book: $775. I don't think it grades quite as nice Arthur's CUnc and GUnc solids, though. I catalogued it as a "traditional" AU: probably about what you guys would call Unc-60.

There haven't been very many posts lately concerning sales (only purchases). Speaking to several dealers lately, I got the impression that most were pretty desperate for some nice material. They claimed they weren't getting any nice, older notes anymore.
I had quite a few problematic EF to AU notes, mostly processed. I was very surprised to sell all of them, in fact recuperating all of my costs despite having bought most of these seriously over-graded. Dealers were willing to pay as high as 70 to 80% of catalogue, one grade higher in many cases than the correct grade.
A few examples:
18 consecutive $1 Devil Face (Be-Co), Original AU (four counting folds each + various handling): $1500
1937 $2, Pressed EF: $110
1954 $10 Devil Face, (Co-To) Pressed, Trimmed & Bleached (all noted by the buyer) EF-AU: $125
1954 $2 Devil Face (Be-Co), VERY BADLY TRIMMED Unc: $240
Definitely seems like a good time to unload some of those notes you've been itching to get rid of.
-
On the same day as the others were put up for sale, these prices were realized for the following:
4 REPLACEMENT UNCIRCULATED *FP* PERFECT CONSEC -$1500.00
5 NOTES GEM UNC DEVIL FACE 0000081 $1-$20- $5000.00
DEVIL FACE C/T $50.00 IN ORIGINAL UNC $1900.00
1935 $1.00 SET ALL 3 *A,B,AND THE FRENCH $3550.00
I didnt have time to post them all,see my last post in this thread for the total 8 listings that sold.
All prices were canadian dollars(after all,it does make a difference! ;D)
-
I know this is an old topic but...... Oh well
A little while ago I found a 1937 $20 Gordon-Towers with the serial number H/E0036531(ChoiceUncirculated)
I paid $280
-
Just sold a DF $50.00 C/T in Gem Unc 66 for $2100.00
Regretting that one ::) ???
Bought B/C $50.00 DF PMG Gem Unc66-$2400.

I recently got a great deal on Ebay!
1954 $20 Note Original Gem Unc for $50 with shipping!
When I recieved the note it looked better than I expected note even a mark on it.
Its book value is $105 (I think) but its probably worth a bit more considering it is original!
-
My parents bought me (For Graduation) a 1954 "Devils Head" $5 Note with serial number C/C 2458436.
It grades C.Unc+
It books around $650
-
hmmm. I wonder what you would get if you graduated from medical school! ;D
-
I would ask my parents if I could get a...
$1 Beattie-Coyne "Devils Face" Asterisk Note (*A/A) in EF-AU condition. That is if they could find one, and if they did I am sure they would probably have to pay a large premium.
But what would be the odds of that ever happening...

I thought you sold that note already?
-
It's made it's way to an auction, presumably sold to another collector, I assume.
-
Yes,I sold this note back in Nov.06,the date of the original post
Thi snote was un-graded at the time. The buyer became disheartened with the hobby, and sold off his collection.I had sold him many high priced notes, and bought back many of them, but not the *VV.I'm not aware of who he sold it too,but they obviously had it PMG'd.
Super grade!

Hi 2inV, would you have graded it that high yourself?

Hi 2inV, would you have graded it that high yourself?
Hi Starman,
Great question.I sold this note in an email sent ot all my previous buyers at the same time.I solicited the highest bid, which came at $13,500.
At the time PMG was not as widely marketed or accepted,at least here in Canada. That is my perception anyways.
What is interesting,I did describe the note as perhaps,if graded, would return one of the highest known *VV's to date.
In direct answer to your question,I had shown that note to many a dealer and collector. All thought it an amazing note.I'd have graded it as such, had that been the norm for terms at the time.
Second thought I'd have probably said...PMG 65 no doubt, with a very likely PMG66 but no guarantees

Heh.. that is too funny. I remeber seeing that 1975 $50 for sale.
I thought to myself while I was in the Currency Museum last week and saw they had the 1975 $50 HA000037 (I think) in the display..
HEY! The HA0000001 is on E-Bay.. Lol..
You should have donated it to the Musem. ;) (Joke)

Thanks for that info.Although I lived in the city in the early 90's was not in to the hobby at that time, never even knew a currency museum could be part of our 'landscape'.

Correction, was on ebay. She could have donated it,but with the printing presses on auto pilot we all deserve our share!
-
It's ok.. they have enough notes in their HORDE. :)
The value of the notes in the collectors area has to well over several millions...
Too bad though. If you did "get them" you couldn't sell them if you wanted to. Unless you know people on the black market or something??
Dang serial numbers. :)
-
The *VV that I previously owned 5503999,now graded PMG66 sold for $14,500 plus 20% fee equaling $17,400.This figure does not include taxes, which, depending where the purchaser resides could be close to $20,000 or better paid for this note.
PMG 65 and 66 notes sold strong.
-
Wow,
How will that effect the Charlton Cat?
-
Just bought a 1954 $10 Devils Head Changeover Note (Co-To E/D) in EF/AU condition, for $60 (Canadian)
