Title: Are Repeaters the same as Radars?
Post by: Mikeysonfire on September 23, 2006, 12:28:24 am
Are repeaters and radars going to be worth the same? They both have the same rarity.

What do you think?

Sorry dude, but I wouldn't pay anything extra for a repeater.

They are much more common than radars and not worth collecting, in my opinion.

Don't they both have the same rarity? 1 in 1000?

Question:

How long do you think it will take for people to claim that the following are also repeaters?

ABCABCX

and

XABCABC

Some already do.

Until the Book definition of repeaters gets nailed down, there is no stopping people calling a note a repeater in any form without question.  Buyer will buy what he/she wants though right?

I have a note:  7777444, and it is a repeater too I could argue. The 7s repeat, and the the 4s do also.
I call it a 2 digit note though instead. (pretty flashy)

Sounds like a good reason for someone to put together a paper about the various opinions discussed and submit it as an article for the CPMS newsletter.

You are correct, Mike, they have the same rarity.  Every stack of 1000 consecutively-numbered notes has one radar and one B-class repeater.  The only reason repeaters are not worth as much is that they are not collected as widely as radars.  I know my interest in B-class repeaters (i.e. of the form ABCXABC where X = any number, including A B or C) is very limited and I would only buy old notes that fit this category.  A-class repeaters (i.e. of the form ABCABCA) are 1:10,000, and because they don't occur in every stack of notes, they should be worth more than radars.  Again, though, radars are well-established as collectible numbers, repeaters are not.  An article in the CPMS newsletter or an entry in Charlton would change that.

There you go, I'm starting to collect quite a few of these since they are simply cheaper to acquire. Collecting on a budget thing as common prefix fillers.
As a math lay person who is several levels below the math geek, A, B, or C class defintions seemed to be a nice simple convention I could get hold of.  The A class as RP describes it ABCABCA makes sense to me just because of the odds alone.
B Class being the more common variety could be ABCXABC so long as X is and even number  ; ;) (according to RP), so then what is a C class?
Also, I just saw a AB000AB on auction just recently, what kind of repeater would tha be?

If anything, I'd say they might be worth more than Radars once people start collecting them (if they ever do). Seeing as how everyone's been keeping the radars and throwing out the repeaters for the last 20 years, older issue repeaters might prove real hard to track down. And that's only as far as the common ones are concerned.
