Title: Possible Rare 2002 Journey $5
Post by: multicolorama on January 14, 2007, 02:55:13 pm
Hi everyone. I have a journey $5 that could possibly have an error on it. It has all this blue ink on Laurier's hair. Im sure that it isnt pen because the ink has a weird pattern. Im just wondering what this error could be about. The serial is HNY 2040629 and FP 10/ BP 10.

I believe that it may be a smear from ink from an outside source.  Just my opinion.

Here is a pic of the back of the note.

I see the smear on the front of the note. Is there anything on the back or does it seem like a regular note?

I had a Journey $10 with ink smears over McDonald's face.  The smears were dark ink, in round irregular blotches and looked nothing like that.

Whatever it is you're trying to show us (maybe a close up would help) on this very circulated note -- It's not very convincing.

I have done a close up up the possible ink smear as best as i can. Maybe in 2 weeks i will buy a scanner and the pic quality will be a lot better. :)

I'm not an expert but this looks like a legit error to me.  It seems like a little bit of the lithograph ink smeared on.  It's interesting how the smear doesn't affect the counter, so it seems unlikely this smear happened after the note entered circulation.

I would venture that this is a legit error as well. A collector I know has an error similar to this except the opposite. Instead of excess ink it has no ink in the same spot. It is on a Journey $10 note. Perhaps he will post an image for comparison.

Upon closer inspection... looks legit to me as well. Over-inking.

From the photo I'm looking at, I don't think it's real.

I own several ink smear notes, and no matter how much extra ink there is, it's always clearly the same color, proving it's the same ink. The extra ink on the note in the photo looks a completely different shade of color.

It looks almost purple if you ask me, but that's just my opinion. it's really hard to tell I'd certainly have to see a better scan.

Now that the alcohol has worn off, I have to change my last post. I have to agree that it looks like a legitimate error to me. Looking at a new note I can see where the purple would have come from. the microprinting reading "cinqfivecinqfive".... etc is printed in purple.

My apologies,

Manny

Hi There,

I also have several ink smeers in that corner on the $5's but this one LOOKS to be legit but I feel something is not quite right about it. I can't put my finger on it though....  :-/

A much clearer picture or a photo with a steady hand  ;) would help.

Hello Again! I might of found another error with a 2006 Journey $5. The serial number on the left side is perfectly lined up but the other side the last digit is slightly lower than the rest of the number. The serial # is AOL 3622829. Im just wondering if its worth keeping or to put it back into circulation? Thank You :).

I have had this occur many times on notes when going through consecutive bills in bricks, but since it did not appear to move farther down on the next sequential notes I assumed that it was not worth keeping. This was ONLY my decision to put them back into circulation.  Hope I was not mistaken in doing so.
I suggest waiting for a reply from someone with more expertise.  I would think if the problem was with a counter it would have continued to move as bills progressed within the brick.

Good Luck

Since I can't even detect the shift, I would say it is of no premium whatsoever, but that is just my opinion.

This VERY common!  ;)

There is always a digit slightly out on every single 2006 $5 note pretty much.

Nothing worth keeping unless it is SIGNIFICANTLY out.
