Title: Counterfeit Birds $5. Is it true?
Post by: bwho9d on May 03, 2007, 02:38:57 am
I just received a Birds of Canada fake in my change.

The person who made this counterfeit bill was pretty sneaky. It agreed with the guide BOC sent me. It was until I compared it with a genuine when I noticed it was counterfeit. There was a lot of detail around Laurier's eyes, the thicker parts (Laurier's shirt, the big "5", the 5 on the top) right corner all felt thicker. The paper was as heavy and look and felt like 100% cotton. The fives on the background and the Coat of Arms were crystal sharp.

My scans aren't that clear (since the whole point was to deter the use of high resolution scanners in the process of counterfeiting bills) though but you get the picture.

1. It has a slightly bigger size than the actual one (note the top one is the genuine) :

2. Sir W. Laurier's head and the bar saying "5 CANADA" is a bit bigger.

3. On the back, there are pink planchetts:

4. I soaked a corner in water and wiped it with a paper towel. I noticed some blue ink on the paper towel.

I currently do not have a UV currency checker, but because of this note, I've been encouraged to get one. Anyone got any suggestions on where to obtain a cheap, but working one (that won't like break in 2 days)?

Generally if water makes ink run, it is fake. I've put authentic notes through the laundry and they came out just fine.

You can find the UV lights cheap on ebay for under $5 but then you have to pay for shipping.
