Title: An insert printing error!
Post by: rachelsprivates on May 11, 2007, 06:26:19 pm
Here is an enigmatic note recently acquired (comments to follow):

The note is in F-VF condition and is original (i.e., not cleaned or pressed) since I can see and feel original embossing.  Replacement error notes are far from unique.  Most that I have seen are cutting errors, meaning that the error happened after the replacement sheet was inserted into the stack and while the stack was being cut into bricks.  This note, 1986 $5 Knight-Dodge HNA 9802286 (BC-56eA) is a confirmed insert note according to Charlton.  It has a printing error in the form of a small fold that occurred after the first printing (of the background tints etc) and before the second printing.  As you can see, the right side of the face shows a shift of the design elements.  The note is also slightly longer than normal, consistent with this error type.

I would submit that insert printing errors should be quite scarce.  If the process of putting insert sheets into stacks is not automated, faulty insert sheets should be detected and removed most of the time.

Any comments?
