Charlton estimates 160 *Z/Z notes were printed. How many are known to have survived, and are the serial numbers known? Thanks
-
The CPMS Newsletter publishes an updated list every once in a while. The latest update was in the December 2003 issue, page 111, and lists about fifteen different notes. They seem to have come from more than 4 sheets, so the estimated number printed will probably increase in the next catalogue.
The latest *V/V census is printed on the same page.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, I found it! :)
-
are these *Z/Z notes very hard to find? How long on average should it take to find one of these *Z/Z notes?
-
Be aware that there is a *Z/Z note in the TCIF auction, Gem Unc. *Z/Z 6392000 Estimated value is between $4,000 and $6,000.
-
well i dont expect a GEM *Z/Z note to appear in my collection anytime soon but i am looking for one in VG or F
-
I think there are only about 15 known... most in UNC. A F sold on e-bay last year for about $1100.
-
eek... it could take awhile, but ya i would pay 1000 or more if i find one in a lower grade

Yes please send a scan... Does this mean that this note is up for sale for $1,200?
If so its a reasonable price

The numbering pattern strikes me as quite interesting (thanks for compiling it eyevet).
Does anyone have any comments on it?
The first 12 in the list all end with 000. The last 4 with 99. Of the original 160 notes, that seems odd, or does it make complete sense to someone? What am I missing?
-
The numbers on a sheet of notes skip by 500 numbers making the last two numbers the same on each note of the sheet.
Looking at the numbers in the list it seems that 10 notes in the 638**** range are all from one sheet.

The same has also occured in other replacement notes, one of them being the excessively rare *V/V which only have 10 known, all finishing with 0 or 9

As best as I can determine this should have been the sheet layout that resulted in the known *Z/Z notes. As Bob once pointed out, I am making an assumption that there is some consistency in the pattern of where the numbering begins, and perhaps this pattern would be correct for a full series of 10,000,000 notes... but it is possible that the numbering may have begun randomly.

*Z/Z 8899999
Charlton's 17th and the CPMS newsletter (Dec 2003) report this as *Z/Z 8889999.
-
Sorry about that.... I've edited my boo boos above.

7 new previously unreported *Z/Z $2 notes are in the National Currency Collection. They are:
*Z/Z 6394000
*Z/Z 6395000
*Z/Z 6396000
*Z/Z 6397000
*Z/Z 6398000
*Z/Z 6399000
*Z/Z 6400000

This finding would suggest that the above proposed sheet layout is not correct, since it is likely that the *Z/Z6400000 note would have come from the same sheet as the other 6 in the NCC, and the other 10 known notes in the same range.
Given that sheet numbering layouts for these specially produced sheets didn't always follow the established patterns I can see one possible layout as:
6380500 6381000 6381500 6382000 6382500
6383000 6383500 6384000 6384500 6385000
6385500 6386000 6386500 6387000 6387500
6388000 6388500 6389000 6389500 6390000
6390500 6391000 6391500 6392000 6392500
6393000 6393500 6394000 6394500 6395000
6395500 6396000 6396500 6397000 6397500
6398000 6398500 6399000 6399500 6400000
Another possiblity is that this part of the *Z/Z run was skip numbered by 1000 rather than 500. This may be a possibility as is seems that most of the notes from this sheet were preserved, and the preponderance of 000 notes and the lack of 500 notes is quite noticeable, although in other areas of the *Z/Z run there are 500, 499 and 999 notes.
