Title: Haxby's Catalog on US Obsolete Banknotes

Bob,

I have heard that James Haxby was working on a new edition of his monumental work on US obsoletes. Since you have published with him previously, do you know if this is true or not?

Its a great volume......CD version needed desperately....the books are too heavy to lug around.

I didn't know the answer to your question.  I have since been able to learn that the second edition is "in limbo" although an enormous amount of work had been put into it.  Not a very satisfactory answer, but there it is.

Greg Davis, of  brokenbanknotes.com, and I are entering the information from the 1990 Christie’s sale of the ABNC archive obsolete proofs into a spreadsheet. We are also adding information from other archive sales (e.g. Spink/Harmers) and the listed proofs in the 1988 Haxby catalog.

We have found that Haxby only knew (or listed) about 40% of the ABNC proofs. That is, the Christie sale more than doubled the number of known face different proofs. Do you know why he would not have seen (or looked at) the full archives? Was there more than one archive location?

The Spink sale mentions that the US obsoletes came from the British ABNC and these tended to be proofs listed in Haxby. Did he only see the BABNC archives? Were these located in Canada? If so, where? Do you know where the other ABNC archives were/are located?

I know that he did not list proof notes if issued notes existed. However, the Christie sale added many proofs for notes listed as SENC in Haxby.

Haxby’s 1988 catalog mentions that he could be contacted through Krause. Given today’s electronic communication capability, do you know if this could be done via email? You mentioned that he was working on a new edition but that it is on hold. Is his health failing?  Is anyone else helping him to publish a new edition?

I've heard that Krause is putting this work out on CD, maybe in time for the big Memphis show.
