Title: Where are all the new bills???
Post by: coinboy on March 26, 2009, 08:23:35 pm
In the past I have been able to go to my local bank and withdraw a couple $100. and be relatively assured of getting crisp unc. sequential bills usually I ask for 5's.
I could go to different branches and get different prefixes often lucking into the od insert.
But for the last 6 months nuthin but well circulated junkkk. Have not been able to find 5 seq. since APE.
A friend who goes to the casino says they always seem to have nice crisp new bills, in the last week he has brought me APP APT APU APV & APZ.

Does anybody else find there banks don't seem to have new 5's or is this just a thing in my area??

It's probably just a trend in your area, coinboy.  You may live in a smaller, less-populated province where demand for new money is less common than in Ontario and B.C.

It's quite possible that the reason why some provinces haven't been seeing very many new $5s in past months is due to the fact that the upgraded $5s were supposed to replace any old and existing $5s (up to and including 2002 issue) in circulation starting in the spring of 2007.  Where I am from, possibly more than 95% of the older issue $5s were already gone from my province, thus requiring less demand for the newer $5s at this moment.

Or, there's a possibility that the current recession may be to blame.  Smaller provinces may not need as much new money as they did in 2007.  That's a probable reason why your region hasn't had much in terms of new $5s since September, and my region the same.  Recessions stink, but that's what happens when people have to conserve their money more than ever and spend it only when they need to and not want to.

However, it's possible that soon, seeing that the upgraded $5s may have a life span of close to 2 years instead of 1 to 1 1/2 years, there may be more activity in new $5s by the summer.  And besides, smaller provinces have experienced a dry spell for shopping since Christmas (only branches with higher customer traffic may have been likely to order new $5s during the Christmas season, and the Scotiabank I deal with is not one of them), and shopping traffic will increase around Easter, so banks may be very likely to order bricks of new $5s by then.  It's just that, due to the likeliness of the recession, fewer and fewer banks need to order new $5s nowadays and they need to save on delivery costs.

As of lately, the Scotiabank I go to on a regular basis hasn't seen any crisp $5s in many, many months.  The teller told me she doesn't even remember the last time they saw any because it was so long ago.  They didn't even get any crisp $5s for the Christmas season.  I can see why there were a lot more $5s at that particular Scotiabank branch in 2007, but in 2008 they were all a rarity.  There seems to be more in terms of crisp $10s than crisp $5s nowadays.  :(

But if there's any consolation, I did manage to get crisp $10 BTT's at that Scotiabank branch back in January and in February.

EDIT:  I just checked the BoC Liabilities table at the Wiki site, and it shows that the amount of outstanding $5s for 2008 were at the highest level - 203,575,600 (thousand?).  Strange that not a lot of $5s in my province need to be replaced.

I've noticed that over the last couple of months Winnipeg banks seem to have run dry for new stuff.  The money around here is actually very beat up.  Through Jan and Feb, everybody seemed to have new stuff.  I've only located one RBC branch here that just got in an order of new 5$-APV's, 10$ BTU's and 20$-ELU/ELV/ERC's.

If you do a search on this site you will finds loads of questions and answers on brick searching.

Even though I haven't seen very much in terms of crisp $5s since last summer (and I haven't been going to the banks much for the sake of changing bills), I did receive one very close to crisp from a CIBC branch during the Easter weekend.  It was an APU prefix, and I believe APU is a widely-seen prefix in my region for the latest signatures.  There may have been a handful of scattered APN's or APP's shipped to my province around Christmas season.

I remember seeing the first APUs from the same CIBC branch back in March, then I saw a recycled APU at a Scotiabank branch, and now just a couple of weekends ago.  They were all within the same range, btw.  So after 3 bank visits and got APU all 3 of those times, I can declare APU as my province's first crisp $5 prefix of 2009.

I have a feeling that when we start seeing AAA or AAB prefixes on crisp $5s in my province, the latest prefix reported somewhere in Canada will likely be AAD or AAE or something.

Well, there is good news- with the BOC touting that they will take extreme measures to get past this recession (BY PRINTING MORE MONEY), we all know from basic economics that all this does is increase inflation.  However, there will be more banknotes to look through.

Bad comes with good I guess.

*sigh*

Yet I still haven't seen very many new $5's in my neighbourhood Scotiabank.  And while we are now seeing $20s with the new signatures, and some parts of Canada are seeing the EU* run, I still have yet to see ER*'s if they're not here already.  Maybe the bigger branches in my hometown are seeing them, but not my Scotiabank branch.

BTW, are they shipping new banknotes to all Canadian provinces as of lately?

The cash gets shipped to all distribution centers. How they distribute it from there is pretty random, unless new is specified and paid for.

I cannot 100% confirm that yes they are, but it seems very unlikely that they would not be.
