April 20th finds:
Easter Sunday coin hunt!

I managed to obtain $100 in dime rolls and $50 in quarters from the bank yesterday.
The quarter rolls yielded a coin from the United Arab Emirates, a ten pence piece from the UK, a 25 cent piece from Barbados, a 1968 nickel alloy quarter and some 1992 commemorative quarters.

The dime rolls were more productive.
They yielded $3.80 in US coins, a 5 pence coin from the UK, several 1968 nickel alloy dimes, some 1969 small date dimes, and some elusive dates like 1983 and 2023.

Best of all, there was one 1967 silver dime hiding in one of the rolls!

Enjoy!

April 16th finds:

These three 1954 $5 notes have interesting things written on them.

The first note has $200 written on it.  Normally, I don’t care too much if the note only has a dollar figure written on it, but I had to buy it with the other more interesting $5s as a lot.

The second $5 has the date June 2nd ‘71 written on it followed by the name Wally Musikowsky the “star”* :D

The third 1954 $5 has the names Sonny and Gyles written on it and the year 1972 in old school cursive numbers.

What I find interesting is that these notes represent a snapshot of the currency that was in circulation at that particular time.

I imagine that it would be possible to find the occasional 1954 $5, 1972 $5s and of course 1979 $5s in circulation in the late ‘70s- early ‘80s.  It would have been an exciting time to be collecting.

One more thing…check out the US $1.  Someone decided that George Washington looked better with a moustache! :D

Enjoy!

April 16th finds and mail call.

Yesterday, I managed to finish searching the last batch of coins and I was pleasantly surprised.

Highlights include two 5 pence coins from the UK, some 1968 and 1969 dated dimes, two colour 2021 dimes,
$5.85 in US coins, and best of all, two more silver dimes, dated 1962 and 1965!

I stopped by the bank today and I got $150 more in dime rolls…Hopefully there are more surprises in these rolls!

I also managed to obtain seven US $2s and a vintage $1.

In my mail today, I received three 1954 $5s I bought specifically for the messages written on them.  More on these notes in my other thread.

Enjoy!

I agree, taxes on face value sucks. If anything, I can understand charging tax on the sale amount above face value but not the whole thing.

What gets me is how the government forced eBay to collect and remit taxes on all eBay sales even if the seller was just trying to sell a few personal items. eBay already charges tax on the fees they collect, which makes sense but the method of sale seems to have influence over the sales tax code. eBay is collecting and remitting taxes on behalf of sellers who are not required to collect and remit. I understand there are sellers who take advantage but eBay should have policies in place to prevent that.

100% agree.

Hey WTTW, et. all.,
i too agree particularly about paying tax on the face value but how would the government separate the re-sales of genuine currency from - everything else.  And we all agree, there's a lot of "everything else" out there.  :)
Cheers,
B

Yes, it really sucks!

It really is "a kick-to-the-head" for the average coin shop. They're all forced to charge taxes on paper money & coins (unless they're bullion).

And as @Al-Bob rightly points out: pretty tough to put any political pressure on the powers-that-be.

I totally agree, but what are we to do?  Unfortunately, I don't think paper money collectors represent a big enough lobbying force to effect any change politically.  Maybe Mr Carney will take pity on us since his signature is on a bunch of bills we collect!

In addition to what you said, we are already effectively paying a 100% tax on the face value of notes by removing them from circulation in the first place, since printing paper (polymer) money is essentially 100% profit for the federal government.
