April 5th finds:

I went to the Mississauga Coin & Stamp Show yesterday.  Unfortunately, the dealers had virtually no raw notes or anything I was looking for.  It seems like the dealers only bring graded high priced notes to these shows these days and if you are a beginning collector, it’s not easy to find affordable Canadian paper money at these events.

I was disappointed that I didn’t buy anything at the show so I stopped at a bank on my way home.  The teller gave me some dime rolls and two 1982 constitution dollars so it wasn’t a total waste of a drive to Mississauga after all!

Enjoy!

Just checked the seller's eBay listings and discovered they are also reselling the Devil's Face $1 A/A0000154.

Same makeover, same result.

Back in April 2024 a matched set of Devil's Face low serial number notes sold on eBay.  The set comprised the $1, $2, $5 and $10 with matching low serial number 0000154.  I posted above about the $2 note reappearing on eBay again back in January 2025 suddenly rejuvenated to a higher grade.

Now the $5 notes has reappeared on eBay but the seller didn't do as well in their attempt to rejuvenate this note.  When it originally sold on eBay it was graded a PMG CUnc 64 with EPQ designation.  After being washed and trimmed in an attempt to have it regraded higher it came back at the same PMG CUnc 64 grade but lost its desirable EPQ designation.

Win some and lose some.

Hello CPMF,

1986 $5 BIRD SERIES GOG TEST NOTES - Updated Register of 6 known notes April 2025

An expanded register of GOG test notes is shown below:

   1986   $5   GOG 0168401   Bonin - Thiessen   PMG CUnc 64 EPQ      G. Bell Auctions (May 2013)
   1986   $5   GOG 0191731   Bonin - Thiessen   Legacy VF 25             G. Bell Auctions (April 2022)
1986   $5   GOG 0206788   Bonin - Thiessen   Unc                           National Currency Collection
1986   $5   GOG 0206790   Bonin - Thiessen   Unc                           National Currency Collection
   1986   $5   GOG 0431423   Bonin - Thiessen   Unc                           private collection (2024)
1986   $5   GOG 0500152   Bonin - Thiessen   Unc                           National Currency Collection

In 2018, a Bird Series note GOG 0206788 appeared on the online paper money forum Coin Community.  This note was dismissed as a non-test GOG note based on the test serial number range known at the time.  The Bank of Canada Museum confirmed that this test note is in the National Currency Collection.  Another test note was added to the register in 2024 bringing the total number of notes available to collectors to three.

A full article including bank note images is published in the Canadian Paper Money Society’s quarterly journal.  This is available to CPMS members – consider joining CPMS – annual dues for digital membership are a very reasonable $10 (special rate for next 2 years).

These notes continue to be elusive to find, however this register is expected to increase over time.  If you know of any more GOG test notes; please send me information using a PM.  I require details and images for confirmation

Today I went to the bank to withdraw some cash to enter to the SNDB and I found this $5 bill. 1 number away from being the 5 millionth note but needless to say I’ll add that to my banknote collection

Thanks Walktothewater for your post!!

I am very pleased to see that this thread is being used as a discussion for a number of interesting topics including the find of the solid number $5 banknote.  This is being a community of like minded collectors and it is really encouraging to see that the search of the banknote is elusive and rewarding.  More importantly, it could restart others to keep the search going.

This banknote will be graded and I will post an image of the graded banknote in nearby future to continue this conversation.

Many thanks to all!  Whitenite

Thanks @Breanna72, @Mike67 & @Whitenite
It's definitely a nice conversation piece although most of my family avoid the topic of banknotes  :D
The funny thing is it actually stopped my searching for a while (since I got it from change & I wasn't pulling anything worthwhile from my recycling searches of thousands of notes). The note is well circulated so it had met many people's eyes & was used extensively before I caught it by chance.  It taught me a hard lesson: people don't check their notes & that the whole finding a good thing is such a long shot that it can happen anyhow & any way (like through searching or just from change). Use cash & you may just find something. It's crazy really... but that's what I got out of plucking that from my lotto change.
(sorry Whitenite - didn't mean to hijack your thread)

Your solid serial looks like a great candidate for certification (its in a lot better shape than mine).
