March 12th finds, part 1:

I decided to go to a different area of the city to prospect for notes and coins…And it paid off!

The first bank I visited was hesitant to give anything up at first, giving me the stock line “We send all mutilated bills out as soon as we get them”.  I explained why I do this in greater detail to the teller and after further conversation, she went to the cash office and retrieved a small bunch of paper money for me.  I took it all, since this was the first time I had received anything from this branch.

The highlights are the 1954 $10 and the BER (2004) journey $10.  Too bad it is a high numbered Jenkins/Dodge signed BER note.  (Why are the 2003 dated BER $10s so much more valuable if there were 7.2 million printed versus only 1.4 million of the 2004 dated notes?)

Enjoy!

March 11th mail call:

I received a package from one of my contacts in Winnipeg.  He gets a lot of old money from his customers and he sent me a whole pile of $1s and a few $2s.

Enjoy!

March 11th finds:
Main Branch Madness!

I paid a visit to the main branch on March 11th and the teller had some goodies for me.

Highlights are the PA $1 note (too bad the corner is missing!😢) and the crispy journey $10s.  (Why did somebody have to fold them down the middle???😢)

I also got some penny rolls and some 50c pieces, plus a couple of black toonies and a Japanese 2000 yen note.

Enjoy!

The cheques in the photo seem to be dated July 11 and 12, 1980 when Terry Fox arrived in Toronto on his cross country run, so those notes would all be 1973 or earlier.  And, that explains the Canada Trust and Toronto Dominion Bank cheques as those banks merged in 2000 to become TD Canada Trust. I don't remember a branch of the Province of Ontario Bank, but that's likely just me. Neat pic.

I guess it depends where you live of course in major cities better the chances are at finding them. These coins are widely available here in montreal. All denominations.

It's also about being in the right place at the right time.  The branches that did tell me they got some said they only got one box, and they were gone within a day or two.  It's easier to hop from branch to branch in a city than it is some rural locals that may have only one or two branches, and I cringe for those that need to drive for an hour to reach the only branch within a large region, do banking.

March 10th 2024 finds:

I searched through $275 worth of dimes and $50 in quarters today.

Highlights include:

Turkish 5 Kurus, 2015
UK 5 pence, 2001
Barbados 10 cents, 1996
21 x US dimes
2017 commemorative dimes
10 x 2021 commemoratives, 2 colourized.
Two TTC tokens
One silver dime dated 1957

It’s funny that the TTC transit tokens are actually worth more ($6.70) than the silver dime I found. :D

Enjoy!

March 10th 2024:

I saw this picture of Terry Fox in 1981 posted on social media.

Just look at those stacks of multicolour bank notes...The collector in me just can't help but wonder what prefixes might be in them!   :D

Enjoy!

I think the coins with King Charles on them were starting to appear in Canada late last year, and I never saw any in Newfoundland to this day.  I gave up doing in-person teller service since July 2012 due to my full-time job and lack of faith for new prefixes seven months into 2022.

I am thinking the banks in my hometown only ordered a coin supply for several months only a few times per year, and maybe nowadays they only do one big order once a year - typically in April, or the week prior to Easter - usually after the snowy weather is over and the ferries can go through more frequently.  If they only order one big supply of money for the year ahead, it's probably due to much higher shipping costs especially since they may have to be sent in via the Marine Atlantic ferry (and Marine Atlantic rates are insanely high now, and rates tend to rise every April 1 - how much further can they go?), and travel over 800 kilometres from Port aux Basques to many of the major municipalities.
