Canadian Planchet has a shiny polished finish (oily looking) while the German planchet has a dull matte-like finish. How to distiguish the two apart is very difficulty even in the highest of grade so you can only imagine what its like if your 1996's are not in great shape. If you kept the first 2$ coin you may have gotten in change (like what i did) back in february 1996 then you probably have the German planchet variety. The Canadian planchet variety became available only in March of that year. If you recall many of the original $2 coins were defective and the middles were easily detachable. I believe this was one of the features in the German variety.
