Hey there.  Is there some sort of coating over the large counter on the reverse of the Journey 5 and 10 dollar bills? On the 5 dollar note it seems it is used for the snowflakes that appear when you tilt the note but this is not the case with the 10 note. I have also seen it on the new 100 dollar journey. What is the purpose of this coating, and only on the large counter (upper left corner) if it not for design. The 20 dollar journey doesn't have this at all?  I am just curious as to what this could be and for what?  Thank You.  Canadianjd

Also just noticed with the 5 dollar journey it does not appear on Knight/Dodge, but does on Jenkins/Dodge!

The coating is clear laqueur. It is found on all journey denominations including K-D. Not sure but I think it may have to do with strengthening the paper so it will hold the braile indentations. Maybe someone else has an idea.

The coatings are on all Journey notes. I do not know what the purpose is, but I'd be interested in finding out.

It is to strengthen the Braille on the notes.

Isn't it "raised dots" and not actual braille?  Not sure... :-?

That would be a negative. It is NOT Braille.
