New Banknotes Will Circulate in Mexico

26 September 2006

The Bank of Mexico (Banxico) has announced that in November they will issue a new 50 pesos banknote; in 2007, those of 20 Pesos, in 2008 those of 100 and 200 Pesos; and in 2009 those of 500 Pesos, and 1,000 Pesos. Some of the notes will have the efigies of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.

The first of the new family of banknotes, the 50 Peso will be issued in November.

Banxico has clarified that the new issues will have colors similar to the present banknotes, but with certain adjustments to diminish the possibility of consuing the pieces of different values. It has indicated that the new denominations of 20 and 50 Pesos will be of polymer and the rest in paper. The new banknotes will coexist with the present banknotes in circulation with the older notes being gradually retired from circulation as the notes wear out and are withdrawn by the banks.
