1937 issues Face & back proofs/specimens

I noticed in the Charlton cat. listings for 1937 face proofs (with and without tint) and back proofs. Can anyone explain what proofs actually are and what they were intended to be used for.
Does anyone actually have pics of proofs that I could look at?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Proofs are production trials done by printers to check the quality of engraving/printing.  If the results are satisfactory to the customer, (in this case the B o C), then the note is printed.

These 1935 proofs reside in my collection...By the way,  Does anyone know what the set of English $500 proofs went for at the Vancouver show?

Unless someone was on the floor, it would be hard to know as sold to book may mean unsold at the reserve.

i think that proofs for the 1935 are rumoured to be in the single digits...can anyone else confirm?
